I said it in a conversation somewhere (CSN I think), if the umpires want to be taken seriously, they need to do a hell of a lot better job doing their job.

If they don't like the criticism, they shouldn't leave a Joe West sized opening for the criticism. It's like 95% about the balls & strikes that can't be reviewed.

That thin blue line of umpires standing together, unless you're Joe West

They also shouldn't be trying to make the game about themselves. Nobody watches baseball for the umpires, especially the umpires who are terrible at their jobs. I don't mind umps like Jim Joyce, who generally does a good job working games. It's the Joe Wests and CB Bucknors I could do without.

You didn't even watch baseball when Dutch Rennert was an umpire.

Anyway, in fun stat of the day news, with Colón's win over the Diamondbacks last night, he became the third active pitcher (Scherzer, in Hawk voice LACKEY) to beat all 30 teams. He has yet to win a game at Wrigley or Chase Field; I'm not sure how many players have beaten all teams and won at every stadium.

Some fun research (the new Atlanta stadium makes it more challenging)...

It's easy if you get traded a zillion times, so you play for and against enough teams that you're bound to pick them all up eventually...

I didn't get into baseball until 10 years ago. But I've seen a lot of old games since.

Yep. Has 97 wins, but played with 12 different teams as far as I could quickly tell. Being kinda crappy helps, because you'll be traded, cut, or otherwise moved on from a lot...

And played 11 in the NL, 7 in the AL, so the lengthy career spanning both leagues and lots of teams makes it pretty easy, actually.

According to reports, the reason only some umpires took part in the white wristband protest, and the reason the umpires folded immediately, was that MLB notified the union in writing that it would lead to fines.

It's like consecutive games hit streaks, meaningless. 1/4 or 1/5 every game for 20 games doesn't add up to a very good batting average.

And like with Jackson, beating all 30 teams doesn't mean a lot when your lifetime record is 97-116.

This fiasco sums up the career of Angel Hernandez perfectly.

OK, the Mets' entire medical staff needs to go, seriously.

Jesus fucking Christ on a Pogo stick. Not just firing them, but I can see some lawsuits coming out of this mess.

Heard the song featured in this video earlier today. This never gets old.

Rich Hill is in the middle of an extra innings no-no against the Pirates, going into the bottom of the tenth and had a perfect game going into the ninth inning.
