The Doomsday Machine could be made into an amazing Trek film.

So could a number of stories that revolved around some type of planetary destruction device (comet, super-volcano, supernova, runaway climate change, etc..).

These types of stories wouldn't need to focus on humans and Earth either. In fact, it would be a refreshing change of pace if the Enterprise crew was struggling with some moral conflict while trying to help a different species on their homeward.

On paper and without much detail, it sounds more suited for a TV episode. But in the right hands, a man-against-nature story could be a blockbuster sci-fantasy film.

The destruction caused by the "force of nature" could be erroneously interpreted as caused by Klingons, Romulans, or any other potential "villain", and dealing with the possible repercussions of making too quick an accusation could create tension and drama, while also forcing the heroes to confront prejudices and even, possibly, work with the initially suspect "villain" to overcome a common threat.

    I agree.
The moral dilemma could be Kirk having to sacrifice say McCoy for the Enterprise, his family for Spock or something. I'd probably like to see something where Starfleet wasn't corrupt.
Maybe Kirk saving people from Orion slave gangs.
However what would I know. I think Serenity and Gattaca are two of the best science fiction movies of all time and no-one went to watch them.

Yes, and if we must have a person/group as one of the enemies, it's a common enemy that Kirk and co. share with their other foe.
