Space hippies? Tribal ninjas with whistling weapons? Spooky children who channel spirits?

Why not all of the above.

OT: The first time I saw a peacock at a zoo as a child, I was underwhelmed. It seemed so mundane without that fanfare going on in the background.

Indeed. All peacocks should be required to use that fanfare as their personal theme music.

That idea is something akin to Torgo's theme from Manos: The Hands of Fate ;) (which by the way, would have made for great music to accompany some scenes in TOS).

One off appearances of alien species that are never seen or mentioned again. Except maybe in tie-in books, where they are given detailed histories and customs. So that way when a new series in 20 years decides to flesh out "random background Alien" some fans can complain that it's not faithful to a book that fewer than a thousand people ever read.

Random references that cause thousands of continuity arguments when future shows ignore them.

Then in a few weeks she will be reporting to, Space Patrol until someone settles on "StarFleet". Let's not forget also that she was raised by the Vulcanious people until the middle of season 1 and then they become the Vulcan people. Also people must use words like, sectors, galaxy and quadrant in very inconsitent ways.
