Actually the Faulkes book was the first one. Devil May Care was set in the 60s. Deaver’s Carte Blanche was the second book and, as you say, set in the present day. They we have Solo by William Boyd set in the late 60’s then Horowitz’s Trigger Mortis which goes back to the 50s. Having read all of them Deaver’s is the worst by far. Horowitz’s is the best. Faulkes has an interesting plot but just regurgitates/reimagines iconic Bond scenes (see as he plays tennis rather than golf with the bad guy, see as he goes on a train with the head of MI6 in Iraq rather than Turkey etc.) Nice use of Ekranoplans though! Boyd’s is interesting, and puts Bond in war-torn Africa, but feels a bit thin.

I guess Eon have no need to let anyone else play in their sandbox, and they’re well within their rights to do that. It’s not like either of the non-canonical Bond films have been sterling examples of how fantastic a non Eon Bond could be.

I can think of interesting twists on the Bond idea (Victorian Bond, Elizabethan Bond, heck you could finally do the female Bond if Emily Blunt was free…) but again I think all you’d be doing is telling the same kind of story with a different setting, and I know they kinda do that now, but I think people would get bored with it. It might be fun for a limited run on TV or something, but the other problem is, from Eon’s perspective, is what if they’re successful and people like BBC Bond better than the incumbent? The BBC might have been annoyed when Johnny Lee Miller started playing a modern day Sherlock, but as the character is public domain there wasn’t anything they could really do about it. Bond is different so why not keep him close to their chests? It isn’t like Disney are letting anyone make Han Solo films.

^Yeah, I can understand their protectiveness to the character and franchise. I just think alternative takes on Bond might be interesting. We've never seen a 1940s or 1950s Bond, for example; Bond as psychological thriller or the likes. I know none of this is realistic but I can dream!

Edit: Rather than a double post, I'm editing this one to say that Yann Demange is apparently linked to the director's chair:

'71 was flawed but I did like it. I heard Denis Villeneuve and David McKenzie were also in the frame. I've enjoyed films by all three, think Villeneuve would be my preferred choice, but probably the least likely.

Just hope they have a decent script to work with.

What would you suggest? A return to the naff-o-rama that actors like Moore and Brosnan represented?
Give me genuine understatement and dryness over third rate comedy and raised eyebrows any day.

Brosnan could act circles around Craig.

And Roger Fucking Moore is self explanatory.

Is it so wrong to want a James Bond movie to be fun?!

Now that Kingsman is doing that sort of fun spy movie, Bond might be out of luck.

Nowadays, they're all a little serious for my taste. But the old ones. Marvelous. Give me a far-fetched theatrical plot any day.

I did like the bit in Kingsman where Jackson and Firth were talking about how spy films used to be fun.

Of course the year Spectre came out we did have some fun spy films; Kingsman, The Man from UNCLE, Spy...

They were clearly trying to make Spectre more of an old school Bond film, but even beyond the script issues they just couldn't seem to get the tone right. Honestly I think if they're going to dial back the gritty they probably need a new actor. Craig can be funny (much like Dalton it's just that his wit is dry rather than about double entendres) and I can't wait to see Lucky Logan because he looks like he'll be a hoot in that, but retrofitting him as Roger Moore at this late stage...maybe not so much.

I think it may have already been discredited but there was something in the papers the other day suggesting Waltz would be back and that they were already considering the title "Shatterhand" which suggests they're going to try and do the book of YOLT to some degree. That actually doesn't bother me (if true) because let's face it when Bond went after Blofeld in the aftermath of Tracy's death Connery was dialling it in and the woman never even got a namecheck (never forget, it was Roge who truly avenged her) so it'd be nice to do that right. Just two problems really.

    1. Guess they're going to kill Madeline to get Bond's blood pumping, which does seem such a lame, cliché thing to do, also since they had zero chemistry and she was given such a thin role Madeline Swann is no Tracy so not sure how much impact it'll have. Personally I'd rather they just drifted apart and Bond un-quit MI6, but Eon aren't subtle so we'll probably get a pre-title sequence riffing on the end of OHMSS :(

    2. It probably means Bond will go fucking rogue again, and I really am sick of it. If it were up to me and they were wedded to the idea of Shatterhand I'd at least make it an official mission of vengeance. Have M assign Bond the mission. "Normally I wouldn't put an agent in the field who had his own agenda, but I know if I send 009 you'll just go anyway. This way I at least have nominal control over the situation." Yes it neuters M again, but not quite as badly as Bond going completely off the grid then being all forgiven in the end like the prodigal 00 agent.

I presume the "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" rumour is because of Madeleine from Spectre but would it really be a remake to kill her off? especially as you would imagine it would happen at the start of the movie & not the end. I still hope Craig does only one and then we can freshen things up again.

I've never actually seen On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
