Just adding to the Intro Sequence discussion, CBS just released videos of their panel today and they said specifically that they "just saw [their] main title sequence" while talking about their new composer. I'm willing to bet that means a longer sequence if they're bringing that much attention to it, but who knows. They start talking about it around 5:33.

I'm not sure that I'd like there to be pop music in Discovery because unlike the countless number of modern-set dramas where it can help set the tone, it would take me out of the time period in Discovery. Classical, pop and jazz have on occasion been used quite effectively in Trek but there is always an explanation for it, it isn't used as montage music out of character context.

That said I wouldn't be opposed to any non-classical compositions, particularly if they were interesting and different sounding - maybe something to approximate what a popular music of the time period might be? I haven't seen Defiance but I listened to the soundtrack and there were many original compositions by Bear McCreary that were of that style. If Russo is up for it, that could be cool!

I'd like more popular music in the series.

Back when TOS used so much jazz in the first year it was still a popular music form here - certainly with folks of Roddenberry and Justman's age.

I like the "music video" tags used in current TV shows.

Using the occasional rock song would be in keeping with the Kelvinverse films, and that is a good thing in my book.

I guess it wouldn't be any more anachronistic than all the swing/jazz/big band songs Vic Fontaine did on DS9, but those were a little contrived. I get a little tired of the fact that nobody in the 23rd or 24th century is interested in any era of music or literature or popular culture more recent than 300-400 years in their past.

Of course, it could just be pop songs used as soundtrack rather than diegetic music that the characters listen to, but I've never been fond of that practice in anything.

    Yes! Exactly!

Of course it could be that even in a cashless society, musicians still get royalties and have exclusive distribution deals.

Personally I'd like to see Murray Gold (the Doctor Who composer) be the Discovery composer. As for pop/rock music...listen to Muse's 'Starlight', David Bowie's 'Moonage Daydream' and Switchfoot's 'Stars' and then say it shouldn't be a part of Discovery lol

Murray Gold would do a great job.

Those songs would make awesome fanmade music videos with Discovery footage - or maybe even used within montages in the show, if it were done in a classy, non-cheesey way. But...I can't imagine it really happening. I also can't help but wonder whether the eternal backlash to Faith of the Heart would make them even more wary of using those kinds of songs in the show at all.

Given how CBS wants to appeal to General Audiences, the likelihood that they'll use pop/rock/hip-hop songs in the show is probably greater than you'd imagine. Yes, it'd make them wary of using power ballads, but they'd likely counter that risk by going for top name artists

It's possible...although top-name artists would be very expensive.

Personally, I'd be all for incorporating more contemporary pop music in the score of the series. Sometimes a particular song is just perfect for capturing the emotion of a situation or scene.

I think I could get behind this. A little classic rock is never a bad thing. Especially if it could be interpreted as an homage to Forrest Gump.

Absolutely, but some shows tend to pick shitty songs that literally ruin the moment with unnecessary cheesiness.

It all comes down to careful track selection and subtlety, really.

From some live tweets during the press conference, the theme has Alexander Courage elements to it, leading me to believe that the Trek fanfare is there.

I keep checking to see if someone snuck a video of it online. Nothing yet.
