Well it was pretty sad in the end. Felt like I was saying goodbye to a good friend. :-( Overall a very good series and not a lot I could fault about it. I don't like comparing the different STs., They've all had their moments. There are always characters and episodes we like and dislike and DS9 was the same. Jadzia's death still bothers me and as I've mentioned in other threads I wish they'd worked the Trill angle a bit more. There were a lot of possibilities there and unique from a sci-fi perspective.
I'm about to finish the series again. My second full, beginning-to-end viewing that I've been doing for the past few months. The last time I did this was about 6 years ago. Jadzia's death was actually somewhat comical to me. I guess that's pretty terrible to say, but without going into a rant the way she died just seemed really, really lame to me. Honestly, there were so many better ways to handle it. Hell, if she got killed by a stray phaser shot it would have been more meaningful, as a commentary on the horrors of war or something. But I digress. DS9 is pretty much my favorite ST series though, I love it. Glad you enjoyed it. Now watch it a second time
@jonds91 Now you should watch Babylon 5. It's similar to DS9 but has it's own style, flavor and melody to it.
In general I hate it when they try to make a character's death artificially more tragic by building up that they are gearing to something new in their life. Same way with Tasha they teased Worf romance the episode she died. To do that and have her due in a way that she just happened to be in the room when Dukat showed up was contrived and weak. Man, Worf has bad luck with women. Tasha, K'elyhr, Dax. Hell, in the future where he stayed with Troi she died.
Right now I'm watching it for the first time -- currently in the middle of Season 5. Just beginning to wane off the "HOLY SHIT THIS IS THE BEST SHOW EVER" excitement that keeps me watching one episode after another and slowly moving into the "OH GOD THE END IS NEAR" feeling.
I agree about Jadzia's death, it was funny to me. If they planned to kill her off it seems like with the whole war story line there were some better ways to send her off. Even if she had been injured in a battle and died from those injuries
Re: Jadzia's death: It would have been so much stronger if they had killed her in “Change of Heart”, like Terry Farrell would have preferred, too. The subsequent arc of a Worf who is tormented about his decision to put the mission over saving Jadzia's life could have been very interesting indeed.
I like what you said about not liking to compare the different STAR TREKS. I don't see the need to "rank" the series either- they're all pretty darn good quality productions & they all have their strengths. Rick Berman did an amazing job. DS9 totally owes it's existence to the strength and success of TNG. It's a show that would NEVER be greenlighted now. The studio will never go out on a limb for a TREK series like it again. So, it's definitely unique. I'm on Season 7--my 2nd complete series viewing. The writing on this series is very strong. I'm still turned off by Bajoran faith nonsense, and Ferengi episodes. I'm still turned off by the main cast ( particularly Brooks, Meaney, Siddig, often Visitor) and most of the characters. The likeability of cast/characters is everything to me, so I'm suprised people call this their favorite. I can see why it never had the mass popularity of the TREKS before it.
I didn't like O'Brien (or Keiko for that matter) when I first started watching DS9. But just like brussels sprouts, I grew to love them.
I don't feel any particular "need" to rank the series. I just know that overall I consider DS9 the stronger show relative to TNG/VOY/ENT, though I have reservations about comparing it to TOS. That said, obviously DS9 never would have come to pass without TNG, so it owes TNG a huge debt in that regard. And, just as obviously, saying I consider DS9 the stronger show isn't the same as saying I consider any of the others to be weak shows.
I've no problems in principle with ranking them. It's just hard to do it. They're all quite different.
My favorites are TNG and DS9. I don't compare them to each other, they are different shows, I just don't get it. I don't like the Ferengie home world shows or the alternate Universe ones. I'll skip those every time. I don't know how many times I've watch the series. ( many times though) I've never watched any of the other series, pretty much at all. I just happened to see an episode of Voyager this past weekend. It was ok. I still didn't like the asinine "sexy chick" bull shit in that show either. I just don't get why they had to do that in every series. Couldn't the dumb assed writers think outside the box and think of it as being the future?
I ended my 3rd re-watch of DS9 not too long ago. Every time I've seen it I like it more than the last. With that said, I like TNG equally, but for very different reasons. They are very opposite to each other in most respects, but I cannot deny the quality of material that TNG did. I like that the two shows co-exist within the same overall framework of the universe that they were set in, but that they touch on very different material.
That was one thing I always liked about DS9, there wasn't much need to have the "sexy chick" on the main cast (yes I know they redesigned Kira's uniform for a little titillation, but compared to the likes of Seven or T'Pol it's really pretty reserved). You have the Dabo girls, but given the job they do and their employer then it's in context with the universe and makes sense.
Well, those that finish the series can always continue with the story... if you like reading. The post-finale DS9 books are some of the best of Trek literature out there. Starting with Avatar, books 1&2 by S.D. Perry, they form a largely continuous "season 8" storyline with well over a dozen books.
