My God! It's going to suck - I mean recycled footage from STII:TWoK and a ship that looks like a new age art design disaster? Plus a BALD and British Captain? WTF! His one line delivery was stilted too - and hell none of the other characters said a word in that trailer...what was the reason for that? Maybe they'll all suck too...NOT TREK! ;)

OMG! What? A Black Commander who reads lines like he's just woken up. He looks like he's sleepwalking. And wow - a n angry female Bajoran <--- There's a character type we've never seen befopre (<cough> Ensign Ro <cough>)...yep very original. Also do they even know what they're talking about - I men the announcer calls DS9 a 'world' - is it a world or a space station? And all the explosions and shield percentage call outs. GR is spinning in his grave...NOT TREK! ;)

Pe4rsonally, I hated ST:VOY it's the only Star Trek series I haven't seen all episodes of, so I can't in good faith commenty on this particular trailer as 20 years later for me, it's still NOT TREK! ;)

And I can't lampoon this either I mean hell the film itself was a $40 million (most expensive film ever made up to 1979) remake of the TOS second season episode "The Changeling" - but I was age 16 in 1979 and fans had many comments such as:

    - Why do the 1701's Warp Nacelles now look like they came from a Klingon Battlecruiser.
    - WTF happened to the look of the Klingons!? (The Federation is now intergalactic dog catchers it seems.
    - If the refit Enterprise is really built on the original Enterprise hull, how the hell did they add a second turbolift shaft to the Bridge?
    - The new Klingon (Katanga) Battlecruiser design was well received as was the opening scene of the Klingons VS V'Ger. The rest of the film, not so much.

Oh please TNG STILL had paper printouts too. Proof? here's a line from Picard that IN "Encounter at Far Point":

So they had a paper printer in the 23rd and 24th centuries. Old tech that still works never dies. ;)

On a side note, why for f*ck's sake is Netflix still playing the very first teaser trailer (from SDCC 2016!) here in Holland when you search for DSC?!??? Come on Netflix, put one of the last two trailers up!

You mean the episode where they describe the race as "Proto-Vulcan" yet it seems the writers didn't bother to read up on the original Vulcan race in that when they were a younger more primitive race they were ALL EXTREMELY violent?
    ^^^
My point - yeah, the TNG writers violated/ignored/didn't bother with established Star Trek canon in this TNG episode. ;)

Indeed. However, there's also everything that's been said about this show. So far, there's been no indication that they'll be going exploring in at least every other episode. Beer is on me if I'm proven wrong.

    Jolan true.

Don't really care about canon, I want interesting ideas as entertainment. It could also be interpreted as being a technologically primitive version of Vulcans as they are "now." In any case, it doesn't bother me.

Same here in Germany on Netflix. Strangely, the trailer from May 2017 was on Netflix here for a while. Now it's gone.

To be fair I always thought that meant text messages on panels and console throughout the ship, not physical paper. We never see paper unless it's in a display case in Picard's ready room! Or for Captain Picard Day festivities. ;)

Look - it was 1987 - and dot matrix was still around IRL, still, the term 'Display' was in use too, back then - but he specifically stated 'printout'. ;)

Really enjoyed the new trailer. Given that this is the 23rd century, the tech level and design aesthetic is appropriately futuristic -- though it certainly would have looked fine had this series been set decades after VOY. I'm not loving the new look of the Klingons yet, but I applaud the showrunners in giving the lore their own spin. Looking forward to seeing the pilot -- especially since that's all I'll be able to see because of the crappy distribution in Canada. Really wish it was going to be on Netflix here.

What I would've really liked is that instead of Burnham being sarek's adopted daughter she was T'Pol's adopted daughter. It would make sense since she has such a deep connection to humanity plus you wouldn't have anyone complaining about how it violates cannon. But I understand why they chose Sarek and Amanda to adopt Burnham because now she has a connection to a famous character in Spock as opposed to T'Pol who isn't a household name.

I'll watch. I'm interested. After all, it's new Star Trek....they have me curious. But I'm worried about the "cheapy fan film" look to this. Shows on the Syfy Channel adopted this sort of look around 2009 or so, and they looked bad THEN, and they still look bad now. Well, maybe bad is the wrong word. Just...kinda cheap. It literally looks like it's 1 step above a fan film. I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Then again, the aesthetic isn't what matters. I don't know. I'll watch, but I'm conflicted. JJTrek's redesign of the classic "look" sold me immediately. This is giving me pause.

But it's new Trek. I'll give it a shot.

They definitely WANT to tie ST: D FIRMLY into the TOS era. Giving a character a connection to Sarek (it's not a dirtect connection to Spock) does that. Also:

    - It DOES fit as Sarek IS the Vulcan/Federation Ambassador to Earth (and he also has a Human wife, which is also a plus given Burnham is Human also .)

    - It doesn't do anything to canon as in the TOS episode "Journey To Babel" Amanda mentions that Spock and Sarek haven't spoken to each other in 18 years; so hell, that even predates events in the first TOS pilot "The Cage" - so Spock not knowing (and thus never mentioning it at any point in TOS) isn't any sort of stretch at all. Hell, Spock never mentioned that Sarek or Amanda were his parents to ANYONE on the Enterprise until they both walked out of the shuttlebay and greeted Kirk in "Journey to Babel". ;)

@sttngfan1701d, I honestly can't understand how anyone can look at this trailer and say it looks cheap and like a fan film. Can you pinpoint exactly what gives you that feeling, because to me this really looks like movie quality special effects and cinematography. (The only thing that looks a bit TV-y to me is the shot where Sarek saves young Burnham from the fire at the school. It's just composed in a strange way and it looks like it was filmed using a video camera.) And just for reference, can you name a TV show that doesn't look cheap to you?

Rewatching the trailer I more and more get the feeling something's awry on Discovery. At one point Burnham asks “What the hell is going on on this ship?” Plus, judging from body language and demeanor, Lorca seems like a Starfleet captain with a questionable agenda. Maybe he's doing something against Starfleet orders?

And another thing: Is it now established that the event from Trek's past that Fuller alluded to, that would play a central part in the series, is the Four Years war with the Klingons?

Doesn't necessarily mean paper printout. They could have used plastic or some futuristic material that took the place of paper.

I'm sorry - we must have been watching completely different trailers. This was the first TV Trek trailer to make the show look positively cinematic. This is hardly the same aesthetic as SG Universe, Dark Matter or Killjoys.

That delta in the sand in the trailer... that's Burnham and Georgiou's path "getting lost" walking through the desert, so Georgiou can give her the talk about getting a command of her own, isn't it?
