Spinner on front of TOS nacelle

actually churns plasma external pool... centrical shunt or inner plasma pool is constant.... the non-energized plasma plate... although both are hydrogen charged for polarity push... the outer is activated emitting quanta... early designs had separate chambers.... TOS would have outer chamber inner core... with a tubing that initiated the staged polarity through a "wiper" activating polarity push. Your warp field was emitted through flux... not quanta being resonated in great magnitude. Although quanta is generated and the coloration is seen in later enterprises... we know that it is mostly contained in plating in this TOS era. NASM did a nice job restoring that nacelle effect on the 11-footer. Do they run it for like an hour a day or something?

Actually, they were there to convince other space faring races that the Enterprises warp drive could actually reach warp speeds that went to 11. Kinda similar to Oddball's explanation to Kelly in Kelly's Heroes that when they put the extra pipe on the tank cannon, germans would think they were fitted with a 90mm cannon and not the paltry 75mm that the Sherman tank had.

 

I must admit to a bit of puzzlement in fully comprehending your line of reasoning. Would you be able to clarify?

Eh. Everyone who's really watched TOS know that the reactors are in the nacelles. The "spinner effect" is just the antimatter reaction

Three times a day for a few minutes, I believe.

I was really hoping there'd be more in-progress shots showing in detail how it was put together, but there wasn't a lot. At least they put out the paint swatches.

 

^ They filmed it from this angle to get a bow shot while hiding the unfinished port side of the secondary hull, but doing so revealed a timeless, iconic beauty. It was serendipitous. (If they had known what they had all along, you would have seen it sooner.)

But granted, you have to work at it to get an unflattering shot of the Enterprise. There must be eight different angles from which I drool over this crazy thing.

 

Yes. Matt Jefferies did an awesome job creating the Enterprise. Roddenberry told him to make it look powerful and I think he succeeded.

 

In some of the earlier episodes the nacelles seem to have grids at the end instead of the glowing orbs! Forgive me if I've got the wrong idea but I've always wondered if this was a mistake or a design they later improved upon!

When Star Trek was confirmed as an actual TV series, several modifications were made to the 11' miniature which differed from its earlier appearances in the pilot episodes. This is when the glowing orbs were added to the afts of the nacelles

The grid/grill nacelles were from the 2nd pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and there was a lot of footage shot for that episode! The early days of Season One were a constant struggle for the effects house to produce the shots needed for each episode. As a result, a lot of WNMHGB ship shots were used in the completed episodes. It also made sense from a financial POV, since a lot of money had been spent on those shots. And since TV resolution was significantly lower in those days, who was going to notice?

 

Even as a kid, I noticed the rear nacelle differences especially; I can recall understanding that it was a change in the filming miniature, but rationalizing the different appearance in some shots as a "configurational" change that depended on the operational status of the ship..
