Ditto One with the Daleks themselves in their first appearance.

It looks like the Doctor has been invigorating for them.

Yeah I think it's pretty much accepted that Genesis was the first "shot", and possibly a pre-destination paradox. The Time Lords saw their possible destruction by the Daleks, so they launched an attack to stop them which failed, but made the Daleks believe the Time Lords were a threat to be dealt with, leading to the Time War that resulted in the "destruction" of the Time Lords.

Yeah but what I never got with this whole time war stuff is how Genesis made the Daleks think of launching a time war. It's never mentioned in the old series so how did they make that sudden leap?

Temporal shields, or being outside of time, or paradox machines.

Daleks started meeting other Daleks who were very different and swore that time was wrong, slightly before they started trying to kill each other.

Or they sent outposts to almost the beginning of time to monitor the future and examine how, why and who about the changes to their history and future-history that seem to be trying to wipe them out as a species.

If I were the Daleks I'd have done something similar Guy Gardner... I'd have an outpost anchored at the distant past with a record of current history, and another at the distant future with the same record, any differences are change, and deal with them that way.

I read a comic recently set during the time war, in part, and there's a "rag tag" group of Daleks working together, all with very different exoskeletons, because they are from different timelines.

A War between the Daleks and the Time Lords was definitely gearing up during the Classic era. In Resurrection of the Daleks, the Daleks had created duplicates and intended for their versions of The Doctor and his companions to assassinate the High Council. By Remembrance, Davros was prepared to use the Hand of Omega in a direct attack on Gallifrey itself.

The Daleks already had time-travel technology, and I suspect Davros was the one pushing for a time-travel angle to their conflict. He probably reasoned that the Time Lords could at some point interrupt the timeline and thwart the plans of the Daleks, but a megalomaniac like Davros probably thought little of the fact that on the whole the Time Lords tried to keep the time-lines stable and hardly interfered directly, with Genesis being an attempt by the CIA to try to prevent the worst possible outcome for the universe.

I always thought Genesis of the Daleks was the first salvo.

The reasons have been lost in time. Some say it was because a dalek spilled Rassilon's pint, others say that it was because The Master said that Davros's mum had a fat arse. Everyone else says it was The Stig!

    It was the Stig.

He pulled the egg whisk off a Dalek once to make scrambled eggs then put it back without cleaning it.

Well according to the Timelords in "Genesis..."

We foresee a time when they will have destroyed all other lifeforms and become the dominant creature in the universe.

Now the Timelords could't have the the Daleks supplanting them as the dominat creature in the universe, after all the Tinelords are arogant enought to think they are the dominat lifeform.
