That probably depends on what you mean. If you mean their pure genius level he might be up there or even surpass them. but if you mean the degree of public recognition and immortality through their contributions to the understanding of the universe I am not so sure. Newton basically invented modern physics. Einstein revolutionized physics with his theory of relativity. Hawking is the really clever guy in a wheelchair with the funny robot voice for Average Joe if they know him at all. In a 100 years no one might remember him at all outside of physicists. I couldn't name a theory that is attributed to him let alone revolutionized the entire field. Edit: well, maybe Hakwing Radiation which comes from black holes?
Hawking also improved the theoretical foundation for the thermodynamics and entropy of black holes beyond that previously formulated by Jacob Bekenstein. That might not sound very impressive but the Bekenstein bound has very profound implications about the nature of reality, information and the limits of computability. We are just getting to grips with the implications.
Nice. He also made Sheldon pass out, and worked with Homer Simpson on the Donut-Shaped Universe Theory.
