It's not just the aesthetic. That's the world, with relatable people, that I'd want to live in. I can't imagine the TNG world working without some seriously dark unseen elements.

Worse than watching C-SPAN whilst having your genitals tortured.

My loves are the DS9, the TOS movies and to a slightly lesser extent TNG so...

But the question isn't "what's your favorite show?"

It's about the aesthetic and attitude of the various eras of Trek. The whole point was to avoid the tired "what's your favorite show" discussion.

So my favourite era is generally 24th century but I also like the post TOS pre TNG era. Sorry, I thought that was implicit.

To answer your question more simply, there are really only three distinct aesthetics so far - made in the 1960's, JJ Trek and everything else.

I like something from every era -- even the Kelvinverse had that riveting opening scene at the beginning of ST09. But there's a lot more of the TNG era to love so I selected that first. And TOS era second.

And yet there's no Cowboy channel, where one watches cowboys sitting by the herd, eating beans, or riding for four hours.

I really like what Mojochi said about why he likes TOS, but at the same time, when I watch it as an adult I think the same I do during Bond movies -- that guy should have died 18-times by now. Oh, well, it's just a [tv show].

I have to say TOS.... for the swashbuckling
ENT for the founding of the Federation as second
TNG for the Holodecks and DS9 as third
The Kelvin timeline is interesting... but there is not much on it...
TOS Movies wasn't bad, but I didn't like it as much as the other ones.

Cool, but there are how many TV, Radio, Internet, and Print resources dedicated to politics? I don't partake of most of them, and the ones I do, I do sparingly, but there they are.

Also, mobsters are cool. Pirates and gangstas. Maybe they should do a series on the Orion Syndicate a la The Sopranos. Who will they space this week, always magically one step ahead of the pesky Feds? Maybe the lead starts each episode secretly talking to his Emergency Therapeutic Hologram, played by Marina Sirtis. One day he may bang her - quiet, mom. The series will be about sex and murder and wealth and freedom, all popular subjects.

You know damn well that "cowboy" isn't to be taken literally. It's not to mean that there are literally guys riding space horses and dealing with outlaws, injuns and sheriffs. So stop it already.

What Tenacity and others have meant by "cowboy" (which is a widely accepted metaphor that you're purposefully ignoring to either be combative or obtuse) is that they are adventurers. Adventurers as opposed to stuffy, risk-averse diplomats or politicians. Which is boring sci-fi.

I tend to enjoy the 24th century best. Of course, it doesn't mean I dislike all the others. It's kind of like pizza with various toppings. I'll enjoy all of them (except maybe the pineapple and spam topping), but I do have a favorite combo.

Woah. There. Buddy. I know what Tenacity meant, because she was using my word. You mentioned C-SPAN as though that's equivalent, so I mentioned a similar equivalent for the dullness of most cowboy-ing too.

If you'd looked at the second sentence of mine that you quoted, you'd notice that I am very much aware of the adventurer appeal of TOS and why I'm torn about it. I too enjoy the adventure of it, but the devil-may-care attitude at this point of my life is a detractor for me.

I find a lot of action movies "boring" because they're ultimately too fantastical to be worthwhile to me. Oh. Well. Don't pick fights with people because they don't like your favorite show.

PS: Look at my signature and profile pic. Yeah, I'm a TOS fan.

    1. C-SPAN sucks

    2. Not picking a fight (didn't know such a thing was possible on a message board), just calling out blatant silliness in your all-to-literal attack on the use of the word "cowboy."

    3. Star Trek is rarely "action," but it is, at its very best, "adventure," and I find that more interesting than a conference room filled with people engaged in a made up debate.

    4. I don't care what show you're a fan of. I didn't agree with what you wrote, so I challenged it. I thought that was...I don't know...kind of the spirit of a message board. It's not personal.

The other option doesn't even register.

    1. Watching 15 hours of surgery would be boring too, but it'd save your life. Plus, the point of any show is to show you the key moments and ramifications of, not the nitty gritty. What's your issue with C-SPAN in this thread?

    2. B. to the S. Your tone was blatantly one of challenge because your favorite TV show is not mine. "Stop it already."

    3. So you like Zapp Brannigan. Sweet. I freaking loved those conference room scenes in which truth was actually figured out by professionals doing a job instead of expected to magically lie in the furrowed brow of a phaser-weildilng dead man. The problem with Kirk is that he got lucky. To me, luck is boring.

    4. You got pissy with a stranger on a sci-fi BB. Then doubled down. Force, meet resistance.
