Was watching the DS9 pilot "Emissary" today, and noticed the ship carrying Sisko and Jake to DS9 had a unique looking corridor. So I decided to take a shot at recreating it using textures in MS Paint. I left the window section plain blue for future reference, so I could add any background I wanted to later. I always thought this was an interesting set, because it doesn't appear to be on the Enterprise (Sisko even speaks to the ship's captain on his communicator, and the Captain sounds nothing like Picard). Anyway, let me know what you guys think!
Cool idea! With that 2D sideview it looks almost like something straight out of the Deep Space Nine game for Super Nintendo/Sega Genesis. Always wanted to know more about the ship that delivers the Siskos to DS9. The holodeck grid (which must be a redress of the Enterprise-D holodeck) looks unique. And you are right, the corridor and window don't look like any set I'd recognize. And do we even know the name of the ship? A mystery ship indeed. That's a pretty accurate looking representation, Admiral Archer. As for the ship, the shape of the window suggests an older starship, perhaps a Miranda/Constitution/Excelsior - one of the "dashes" in the "dots and dashes" window rows that those classes sport? Of course, it could be any class (although, I favour an Excelsior).
That second screencap of Sisko and Jake in the corridor with the door behind them is definitely a redress of that section of the Ent-D set on Stage 9.
I just rewatched the early scenes of the enterprise. The first scene after the opening credits clearly shows Sisko had just arrived and his log/overvoice stated the Enterprise was there for a couple days. But there was no docked ships on approach yet a Galaxy class starship is docked after opening credits. I think it was a post-production goof.
Looking through some screencaps I think it's possible that the corridor is either a redress of the Enterprise-D shuttlebay set or this corridor from TNG.
I always assumed Oberth Class cus there was a magazine bit before it premiered that was about the new and upcoming at the time TV show
I assumed it was a simple transport ship, offloading the Siskos (and a few other personnel) before withdrawing back to Federation space. Must be an odd design though with a holodeck on the outer edge of the hull.
Ah yes, I remember that as well. I'm sure you are talking about this Cinefantastique cover. I guess they hadn't decided on a final design for the station yet or weren't willing to reveal it just then. Pre-premiere marketing for new Trek shows always produced weird things like this.
Yep thats the one I assume he was brought onto DS9 on that ship I think its listed as USS Cochrane in other places.
Ah, of course, you are right! I forgot about that. Really cool that they dusted off that old model for the pilot. And here I assumed this cover was more in line with this weird pre-premiere logo for Deep Space Nine or that teaser trailer for First Contact that uses effects sequences from Voyager, Deep Space Nine and The Next Generation. And the score of The Undiscovered Country, no less. That Oberth-class ship on the cover of Cinefantastique is actually the USS Yosemite, according to the registry. The ship that brought Dax and Bashir to DS9 was the USS Cochrane, as @Kaiser already suggested.
The holodeck was green-screen / set miniature / compositing (there was a behind the scenes somewhere that talked about the holodeck and orb scene), and the corridor was a redress of the Ent-D shuttle bay. If you watch the episode the visible corridor wall lines up exactly with the shuttle bay shape. If you watch closely in the first shot of the door it is Blue, then Blue on the shot of the door closing, and then grey on the final walking down the hall shot.
Ah, so I guessed correctly! But the window seems to be a new thing specifically built for the pilot, right?
Unlikely. They probably found a windowed wall from somewhere and tossed it against the half-set they threw together. The holodeck is definitely a miniature.
Just rewatched that sequence and it's just as you say, first the holodeck door is blue, and then suddenly it's grey! Ah, the magic of editing. I'd love to see that set miniature. Yeah, me too.
I think the window there looking out from is a reuse from the bridge of the first Oberth Class ship in TNG (i cant spell it) where the emergency hatch was blown out from
I've always wondered why there would be an emergency hatch that opened out directly onto the bridge, surely they'd have an airlock between the bridge and the hatch!
