Looks like that's what the writers did too.

From the official twitter account of Discovery's writer's room.

Whatever it is, it's pretty unimaginative, but not altogether unexpected.

I've always liked the Discovery since that first teaser, but I seriously never noticed the concentric rings. I'm not too crazy about them but maybe there is an explanation...Maybe its some kind of mobile space station. Maybe it's huge, I dunno.

Side thought - have we got enough to put together the Discovery command crew?

    Captain - Captain Gabriel Lorca
XO - Lt Commander Michael Burnham
    CMO - Doctor Nambue
    Science - Lieutenant Saru
Engineer - Lieutenant Tyler (pure guess-work)
Helm - Ensign Connor (he appears to be at the helm on the Shenzhou)
Navigation - (character played by Mary Coutts, pure speculation as IMDB says she's the 'CONN officer')
Communications - Cadet Tilly (only remaining position she could fill)
    Security - Commander Landry

In Star Trek, you can justify whatever odd shape you want the ship to be by claiming that it has some peculiar and unusual interaction with "warp field geometry." ;)

I thought Burnham was supposed to be getting her own ship? Why would she leave one XO job (Shenzou), for another (Discovery)?

Plot reasons. The original idea was she would work her way through the ranks as the season progressed. Obviously even though Georgio says she should have command of a ship in the first trailer, something happens to side track that.

A formal reprimand perhaps. Like Worf. She's too young. If she is Number 1 then they need a reason for her to never get her own command, unless she gets a lesser command after Kirk takes over for Pike.
Data was in starfleet for like 2 decades and had to remind Picard to give him a temp command in Redemption.

I'm guessing the plot of the pilot, which I'm calling Encounter at Shenzhou, or maybe The Rage, will address that - I would predict some kind of epic fail on Burnham's part which gets her assigned to Discovery to learn about Command from Lorca.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

And on the subject of episode titles, I hope they do more lyrical or Shakespearean quotes for titles, as opposed to single words or a couple word description of the episode!

I still prefer the shorter nacelles because I think they suit the Discovery better but I have to congratulate @TheIrishTrekkie ! That poster art is gorgeous!

It is not just growing on me, I am genuinely starting to really, really like Discovery. It is immediately recognizable as a Starfleet ship (and for non Trek fans as a Star Trek ship) yet it still does its own unique thing.

Yeah, I feel the same way. When we got the first teaser I wasn't very keen on the design. But it really has grown on me a lot.
