Actually, he died in 1972 in a motorcycle accident. Memory Alpha originally had it listed as "Jerry Eugene Catron (10 May 1927 – 18 September 1972; age 45) " until somebody changed it. Grant Woods has him beat, sadly, and also in a motorcycle accident (though one source says a hang gliding accident for Catron).
DM was one of the few episodes where you had security posted on the bridge. That really should have been a regular thing, but I understand that the production budget probably would not have allowed it. Of course by the time of TNG, it does become SOP to have the head of security posted on the bridge.
3 other actors recently died without much fanfare....... Ed Long -- Midro from Cloud Minders Vince Dearick Sr. -- Mathews from What Are Little Girls... and Steve Sandor -- Lars from Gamesters.... This brings the number to at least 216 deceased actors out of the 400 actors with featured speaking parts that have passed away. But hey, after 50 years 46% are still alive!!! Actually 5 actors died before the 60s ended. One of the three old "survivors" from the Cage died before TOS even premiered, Woods, Hunter, Theo Marcuse (Korob) and Frank Overton (Sandoval.) The latter 4 all lived to see their TOS performance air on TV.
That fight scene between Montgomery and Decker in DM is classic, maybe even better than some of the Kirk hand-to-hand battles. RIP, Mr. Catron.

I read about the confusion over Jerry Catron's death this morning over on another site. Apparently he was also Mark goddard's stuntman on Lost in Space as well and Goddard had commented before that his Catron died in 72. So was this the same guy? JB
International Movie Data base says that the TOS Catron died this year. It's a riddle, wrapped inside a mystery.
