Where should Star Trek go next if going forward?

    Hello!

My coworker and I often discuss a few of the many possibilities of the future of Star Trek. We are aware that once Voyager returned home there have been books written about what was to have happened, games that depict what followed, as well as the future references that were mentioned throughout the different series there near the end (TNG, DS6, and VOY). However we can't help but wonder what a new Star Trek show could possibly bring if one were put together.

In order to try and get a rather general feel for what others feel on the matter, we created a survey through a free survey site and the results thus far have been quite entertaining. In order to further the discussion count, if anyone wishes to take it, the site address is as follows https://surveyplanet.com/590cc35a14f0ca1b31738c28.

Also if there are any questions you think we missed or would like to see, please let me know. Thank you,

My hope would be that if a new series was created, it would be set well in advance of the 24th century and take into account all the changes that have happened in the novels. I would hate to see all the effort and all the changes made to enemies, friends, relationships that have happened all be for nothing.

I don't think we'll ever see Trek go past the 24th-Century. At best, we might see a reboot/reimagining of TNG at some point, but I really wouldn't be surprised if we just stick with the TOS era for the foreseeable future.

With going back to Archer and now the new Discovery that is to be showing up, it is doesn't look like it will go forward any time soon. Which is why we put together the survey. Those I work with who watch, and those that i know outside of work all say the same thing, we all dread the thought of the Discovery show and want so badly for something new. The games and books are great, but they aren't a show truly telling us what is next.

Which is why we put the survey together, to see if others agreed with us. Looking at it now, there were some ideas that were missed, and once we get enough views, we hope to possibly send out another with questions others have.

So for those that have taken it thus far, thank you! For those that will, thanks in advance! We welcome the thought to have the survey spread far and wide so we can really see what people think. We are sitting at 38 responses now, if we can get a few more, I would be happy to share the results.

I think they should do what TNG did in relation to TOS - move it ahead another 100 years so that they have time to decide what they want individual 24th century characters' legacies to be. Focus on what is happening at that point in the future and only look back after you have it figured out. Plenty of room to eventually decide to incorporate elements of post-TNG/DS9/VOY series Trek lit if they wish.

When I got to the third question (non-Trek captain) I only gave two responses, the other three characters I had zero option on. The survey wouldn't let me continue.

    Oh well.

We did debate making the questions optional, however with the way the questions were set up in the site we used, they wouldn't allow us to do so.

    Thank you for trying though.

It should go into the future. The decision to make Discovery yet another prequel is a real head scratcher for me.

Yeah... That was the reason behind the survey in the first place. Too many people I have talked to want to go into the future of Trek, not the past; and it was a fun discussion, what could be done, what could happen, and how things could possibly play out in the future.

IMO, it was the only viable decision--as far the studio is concerned. It's close enough to be like TOS (which really says it all), plus avoids the holier-than-thou "perfect Humans" and extra continuity baggage of the 24th-Century. And going beyond the 24th-Century really isn't an option unless new creators can convince the studio to take the plunge like Roddenberry did with TNG.

Makes sense to me - Paramount's last three Trek movies were Kirk era, so it's fresh in everyone's minds.

The fact Star Trek had been around for half a century in 2016 barely registered. A few "And finally..." puff piece TV news items, but that's it. Even Beyond had long since finished its run in cinemas, by the time celebrations by rights, ought to have been kicking into a higher gear with a gargantuan franchise parade. Not that I'm bitter or anything...

I see Trek someday coming to the present day though of course when they do this show it will be the future of course from our current present day.
I have always wondered about the possibility of modern humans gaining access to a advanced Starfleet ship and going off to explore the universe even before a Starfleet or Federation has been created.

Star Trek has to take it's cues from where we are today. The technology and social relevance of the now dictate what Star Trek needs to be. It has to be far enough away that people get their technological magic but still tell compelling human stories. I'm happy they went in the direction of Discovery. For me the appeal of Enterprise was the first time/will this ship survive the trip feeling. Compare that to TNG and crossing the galaxy on auto pilot as an afterthought. There needs to be danger and wonder in space. The feeling you would get on a small ship in the middle of the Atlantic as opposed to a fun ship cruise in Caribbean. I started the survey but stopped at what the gender of the captain should be because I didn't think it mattered. Janeway wasn't my favorite Captain but it didn't have anything to do with her gender.

What we need is Star Trek Titan taking place immediately after nemesis. Riker took Command following the events of nemesis, but use Frakes as an occasional character not every episode. Follow an ensemble cast of junior officers similar to the TNG episode "Lower Decks". There are no cannon events post Nemesis and never a lower decks perspective so the writers should have all kinds of freedom to do something new but still recognizably Star Trek. By the way I know it won't happen but if I were a big shot cbs executive it's what I'd push for.
