I don't really care what happens after I die, it's out of my hands  And no I don't believe there is any way for it to be IN my hands through beliefs or actions.

Have a good life, be good to people, work on the things you feel are the most important whether it's relationships, your art, your work, posting shit on msg boards, admiring birds.. appreciate it all. Leave the world a slightly better place.

Too much focus on what happens after we're dead in religion!

Is it wrong that I don't even like the idea of bad people going to hell? Seems to me that when you die a God could help fix whatever was inside that person to be a better person. Also if hell is torture then that is something we aren't supose to do to people we lock away in prisons.

    I think that's perfectly reasonable.

A loving god wouldn't torture his creation....... That's my thinking.

Well I don't think God if their is a God much cares about humans, at least on that level so I don't know. Best I can think is that version of a God might have something like a prime directive were he doesn't get involved with primitive cultures until they evolve. Which is also another reason I don't believe in organized religion. You think a God would be smart enough to know that handing over that knowledge to a bunch of primitive people would backfire. MIght as well give them nukes while he was at it.

He did give us nukes when he made the Atom.

    What a dick.

I'm reminded of when Rodney and Shepherd were playing this really cool video game in Stargate Atlantis and eventually realized it was a REAL world they were making destroy each other for fun. Maybe GOD had a good laugh over how he put those atom easter eggs into the world soooo subtly but he knew they would eventually be discovered and used for 'splosions.

An Alpha God of creation I find difficult to believe in - who created Him? On the other hand, I find more credible an Omega "God" that collects all information about all possible states of the universal wave function in Hilbert space, or perhaps an overarching Fock space, constrained by the Wheeler–DeWitt field equation. Everything that can possible happen happens and is accessible to an ultimate intelligence. This intelligence would be part of the multiverse and not a distinct, external, eternal entity. Perhaps it could choose to simulate heaven, hell, rebirth or Nirvana for those discrete, semi-crystalline world threads of consciousness in an otherwise timeless realm (such as humans) that expected to experience such thought constructs. To your scattered bodies go...

    Smells like teen spirit?

    Maybe we're the entertainment?

You're right, I don't believe in Hell, but the fact that you do and believe it's a place for your God to punish non-believers and LGBTQ people and others with eternal torment indicates a great deal about those like you and is quite frankly a very sickening mindset. I don't have to live with God, but I do have to live with people who think like you voting in my country and denying people rights or harassing people for being different than you. That's why I care.

I think most Christians I know don't believe in hell and if they do, they generally think you go to hell if you've been a really bad person. The Christians I talk to don't believe that being atheist or LGBT make you a bad person. Contrary to church dogma, most Christians I know don't consider these things to be sins and they just expect you to be a decent human being.

Speaking of which I just saw an interview on TV with Margaret Court and she was professing her beliefs and said that if people read the first 2 books of the Bible they would realize that marriage is for men and women.

She then says homosexuals can live their lives how they want they just can't have marriage.

Oh oh........ I think she was implying that marriage is sacred.

Agreed. And to clarify for anyone reading my previous remark, I'm not talking about all Christians, just the ones who share Refuge's beliefs in Hell. My aunt would be an example, judging by her many attempts to save my eternally damned soul. ;)

It sounds like Hell for you would be spending eternity in her company.

She's alright, just difficult at times. It's a strange dynamic, because she's not deliberately cruel about it, and she genuinely means well, but it's like, do you even hear what you're saying? Besides disagreeing on virtually everything socially and politically, when it comes to just normal interactions during family gatherings she's pleasant enough to get along with when we're watching sports or playing poker or board games. And we never actually get mad at each other. It's just more of a soft condescension on her part. I think ever since my Mom died and my health took a turn for the worse she's gotten more intense about it like she thinks time is running out and she has to reform me.

It seems pretty shitty to torture people for eternity for a finite crime. Even someone who is "pure evil" is likely suffering from some sort of mental illness and may not be fully in control of their actions. I don't even think that Hitler deserves eternal punishment, after a certain point he's suffered enough. I really don't think people put much thought into the idea of eternity, which to me is deeply horrifying.

If my impression of your beliefs about Hell as stated in this thread is wrong, then please feel free to set the record straight instead of just making vague comments. You seem to be taking matter-of-fact restatements of what you said as some sort of personal attack, when we're just trying to have a dialogue with you as message boards are meant to do.

Horror writers do. 'Seeing' eternity being enough to drive man to utter madness, and all that.

    Which is very telling.
