Kenneth Mitchell posted on Instagram on March 30th that he was going to Toronto, now we know why, heh.
It's also interesting to note that unlike the previous cast announcements, Tyler has not been named as part of either the Discovery or Shenzhou crew.
You and io9 are reading too much into this. The change might have happened a long time ago, they thought he fits the role better this way and they already had him under contract. They weren't rushing out to announce it. Maybe we will be getting some trailer soon and this announcement is just a heads up so the fan base doesn't start crying out that they didn't announce him as a (probably) human. As for the news: I'm very happy for Rekha Sharma I loved her in BSG, she was one of my favorite character especially how she embraced her cylon side.
TV shows and movie go through this all the time. Always have. The internet has just made it more noticeable. Plus media sites are jumping on every little thing for click bait. If people had social media back in the 1980's the Sirtis/Crosbie thing would be getting massive attention.
Exactly. Many people think that casting announcements happen straight away after the contracts are signed but this not the case. Often an actor is already working on set or has even competed the role by the time the news is released.
Maybe. The serialised natured of the story could mean that we going to get a lot of characters who really contribute, as opposed to just being minor players. However, not every casting announcement necessarily means a major character. Maybe CBS are just making the occasional announcement that has a positive aspect to maintain interest while distracting from the alleged "troubles". I'm hoping that the Klingons are indeed a major aspect of the story and they are represented as a truly alien and violent, war making race. TNG portrayed them as just a bunch of people with a bit of anger management problems.
This series is already about 6 months late to filming. It's extremely possible they had to recast because an actor had other commitments and became unavailable.
Were they even announced as the other roles before being switched? I though it was something that happened during auditions. The actor is still on the show, they just moved him to a different role. Though I guess it is possible this character he is playing now has less screen time.
You obviously didn't read anymore in the thread, quoting one out of context one post I made two pages ago in an ongoing conversation with others, which mentions this exact scenario as a possibility. Maybe instead of quoting and reacting to single posts from pages prior you read the thread before replying?
Clare McConnell looks like she'd make a good Klingon, not sure if it's the eyebrows or forehead or what but I can see it.
Sounds like Rehka is a REAL fan, and perfect for this series. Hope the writers do her justice. Interesting that the new additions... they are "leaders in the Klingon Empire", but seem to be younger white people. I agree with the person who said the more diversity for Earthers, the better. So the switching, at this point, doesn't bother me. We'll see how it works out after it actually airs
Meanwhile the old cast gives us a script glimpse..sort of... https://twitter.com/jasonsfolly/status/858526870052245504 Jason IsaacsVerified account @jasonsfolly #StarTrekDiscovery Ep3 Readthrough security protocol. Even the actors aren't allowed to see the lines. Keeps it fresh
I thought that as well - but there's always the possibility that they're filming out of sequence. If that big Klingon set was needed for the first two episodes and then came back later on, say for episodes 9/10, it's make sense to film 1, 2, 9, 10 then deconstruct the stage for something else instead of taking it apart after 2 and rebuilding it for 9. Same goes for actor schedules - maybe some were only free for a block so their episodes were filmed first etc. Of course, they could just be filming really slowly and carefully and that theory is way off. Just seems odd to have so many cast announced right now and for Chris Obi to have left Toronto if they've only filmed the two episodes.
