Zachary Quinto: ‘No Guarantees’ For Another Star Trek Film

Probably partly to blame, but I maintain it just wasn't very good either.

 

It wasn't as good as it could have been because Paramount rushed it. So either way, their own fault, and hopeully they'll learn from their mistakes.

 

Ah, I forgot about MI. Those bring a nice size profit to Paramount too.

With the way the market is now, franchises are what matter to big studios.

Paramount: Star Trek, Mission Impossible, Transformers

Disney: Their live action remakes of their animated movies, Marvel, Star Wars and eventally Indiana Jones.

Warner Bros: Wizarding World of HP, LOTR, DC, their Scifi movies (Blade Runner, Godzilla 2014, Kong Skull Island, Pac Rim 1 and 2 and Edge of Tomorrow 1 and 2) and whatever projects Nolan wants to do.

Fox: Alien/Prometheus, Predators, Planet of the Apes, X-Men/Deadpool, Kingsman, Maze Runner

Sony: Spider-Man, their comedies (Seth Rogen's catalog, 21/22 Jump Street, Sex Tape, Bad Teacher, Smurfs etc), Resident Evil.

Universal: Jurassic Park/World, Fast and the Furious, Jason Bourne, 50 Shades

Lionsgate is without a big franchise at the moment. They did have the Hunger Games and less successful Divergent series.

It's kind of disappointing when you think about it. With regards to so many new and untested IPs finding massive success with the general audience and old IPs (like Planet of the Apes) finding new found success and Trek still struggling to hit it big. Idk what else they can do.

That being said there have been so many changes at Paramount since Beyond came out and despite its good reviews, it was a box office disappointment and has left the future of the Kelvin universe in question. I think it's very much up in the air if there will be another film. The one thing I will say is that the earliest another film would go into production is next year which means it's unlikely that we or the cast would hear anything until much later this year even into early next year. But Quinto did say "I know that they are working on a script for another one" which means that there is some movement on it.

 

There will be a fourteenth Star Trek feature film. Of that I am sure. The question is if it will be sooner or later and whether it will be nuTrek's "ST4" or not.

 

-then again Episode 9 is due May 2019 now and cant see Paramount wanting a Trek out same summer as Wars (and doubt theyd want another 4 year gap for summer 2020) so if there is to be a 4 it looks like Trek would have to return to the Nov/Dec dates again

 

There wouldn't necessarily be anything wrong with that. It could lead to the slower, more thoughtful movie many fans have been wanting.

 

Star Wars: Episode IX will be released on May 24, 2019. So Star Trek 14 could take the (November or) December '19 date. The James Bond films are released in November and they always make solid business.

 

Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films were all December/January, too.

 

Just looking at schedule for Nov/Dec 2019 and looks ok for Trek -no SW9 now or Avatar2 (Dec 2020)

the summer is an absolute bloodbath though with an easy 5-6 billion $ grossers

 

There are so many active and upcoming franchises right now, with so many sequels happening, that it's a bloodbath almost 7/8 months the year.

 

Traditionally big franchise movies are typically released in May, June, July, November and December however in recent years due to the sheer number of franchise/sequel movies out there, studios are increasingly putting releasing big movies in March and April now.

My guess is if Paramount decides to go through with a 4th Kelvin movie, it'll be out in fall 2019. There is no way they'd release it anywhere near a Star Wars film.

 

If Paramount is hesitant to begin production on the 4th J.J. Star Trek film due to the Beyond box office, then maybe it's time to go the WOK route of a much, much smaller budget after TMP so the box office profit margin might be better.

 

There is no doubt regardless of what the next Trek movie is that it will have a lower budget than Beyond. From what I've read, Beyond was supposed to have a budget more in line with the 2009 film ($150 million) but because of Paramount's decision to scrap the original script for Beyond, which was already in pre-production, and start over resulted in having to expand Beyond's budget.

I think Paramount should copy what they did with Arrival for the next Trek film. Arrival was a high concept, very story driven sci-film that only cost $50 million to make and it's total box office was around $200 million. Beyond made $340 million in total box office proving that there is still a market for Trek films but they need to adjust the budget for future outings whether they be Kelvin films or something else.

Another factor was poor marketing for Beyond. It was the 50th anniversary of Trek they should have been promoting that like crazy. The lack of heavy promotion for the film until a few weeks before it's release suggests Paramount felt they had a dud on their hands.

 

I though the marketing here in the Uk was almost non existent, apart from the few trailers i saw online, that was about it, you would never have thought 2016 was the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.

Of course i have been somewhat spoiled with what was the almost year long 50th of Dr who feast that we got back through 2013, so maybe i was expectinmg the same for Treks 50th, was i wrong to expect the same.

 

If you were wrong, you're not the only one. Think about how the marketing campaigns for Civil War and Batman V Superman, and Beyond's was non-existent regardless of any anniversary.

As for the whole anniversary itself, Thunderbirds made more of it's 50th in 2015 than Trek did last year.

 

all I saw (beyond the internet - trailers, various posters etc) was a standee in the cinema of the pretty lame International poster. there wasn't even a trailer before TFA for me! (had held off watching it online as had been told it was going to show before SW7) and don't recall much or any in the way of 50th ann documentaries on tv like there was for the 25th. that LA celebration thing where everyone got a TMP style poster was the only thing can recall
