Best Blu Ray Collections?

Apologies in advance if this isn't the right forum, but it seems like this crowd will provide the correct answer for my question....and given the money involved I don't want to be wrong.


I'm looking to purchase all the b/r collections for:

• TOS films
• TNG films
• TOS (remastered)
• TNG
• DS9
• VOY

There are several options available for buyers, and I want the highest quality collection available from a viewing and collector perspective. Only interested in Blu Ray. Quality of materials (packaging, discs, organization, etc) is also important for me. If I'm going to buy all these, I don't want everything falling apart all the time. I want them to last for as long as possible.

I trust this place a lot more than online user reviews from commercial sales sites. I truly appreciate any and all feedback or reviews. As you can imagine, it's a big decision.

DS9 and Voyager haven't been released on bluray, never will.

For the movies, I feel that the Stardate Collection is pretty good, however, it doesn't have the remaster they did for TWOK. TNG can be bought as a boxset, but of it's the cardboard packaging, I'd suggest buying the seasons seperatly.

 

I'm interested in this, I'm still rocking my 1-10 DVD box set from 2002, which has the directors cut of TMP & TWOK in, which I'm by and large still satisfied with. I'm not bothered about the packaging too much, more so the content, but would really like these films in hi-def. I'm just waiting for a definitive set before I drop cash on in, preferably with the TMP DE on, but I fear I'm in for a long, possibly infinite wait for this.

 

I recently bought the 1-6 and 7-10 movie boxsets, and have to say I wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be. 1-6 just look like they've gone through a general remaster with no extra attention, and while some shots are beautiful, alot of the earlier effects really stand out (and not in the best way).

Also the packagihgnfor 7-10 was clearly put together by someone who doesn't know about Trek (the case for Generations has a pic of Data in a grey shouldered uniform, and the Enterprise/Bird of Prey pic on the back of the whole box is just a shambles). That said, I don't know what any of the others are like, so don't know if they're the same or not.

 

the Legends of the Final Frontier set is good for the 1-10 films. nice box. all films separate cases (not a big plastic 'book')

 

There is a 50th anniversary collection that came out back in September. Contains all of the original series, the first six original series movies, and the animated series all on blu ray. As for TNG, I would recommend going with the individual season blu ray releases. Also, you can get the complete series of Enterprise on blu ray as well. All are available through Amazon, which is where I usually get the best prices as well. I didn't buy the recent Enterprise blu ray release. Rather, the one I purchased off Amazon came in an orange cardboard box which contained a plastic book with all four seasons. I believe the content for both the Enterprise blu ray sets (orange box or no orange box) are exactly the same as the individual season releases.

 

Yeah I've been looking at this release, quite tempting for the price.

 

After much research, I'm gonna go with the 50th Anniversary set to start with before acquiring the TNG sets of the series and films.

The 50th set is truly awesome. It seems well organized, and I hope it's well constructed and holds up over time, but it includes basically every single thing I could ask for. Pretty awesome.

The only thing I don't like about the 50th Anniversary set is the absence of the original artwork for the films. I love the mythical '80s cover art for the TOS films.

 

I believe a lot of the blu-ray sets have come down quite a bit in price. I remember when a single blu-ray season of TNG or Enterprise was about $100 (CDN). I was able to buy the complete set of each for about $120 for TNG and $100 for Enterprise. TOS was even less. Around $40 or so maybe. (Best Buy had them on sale).

I now have pretty much everything that's on blu-ray except for TAS, the Roddenbery Vault set, and the various TNG two-parters they release on their own. Dealing with the plastic books can be slightly annoying, but I think it's cheaper in the long run to get the complete series set instead of individual seasons. (I think there's a set that includes all of TOS, TAS, and the first six movies).

The special features for TOS are lacking, but they were more generous with TNG and Enterprise. There's a number of audio commentaries, some lengthy discussion panels with the actors and writers, and some very candid interviews. (Brannon Braga is very honest about what he thought worked and didn't work about Enterprise. It's hard not to respect him after listening to this).

 

You won't be disappointed. I bought the set when it came out on the 50th anniversary to the day trek premiered (in Canada I think? From what I hear it premiered in the U.S. on Sept 8th.). The set is gorgeous. I got it at best buy so it came with an additional exclusive villain artwork .But what I love most about the set is that each disc has some iconic imagery/artwork pertinent to one of the episodes on that disc. It really is the best release of TOS (and most complete) that I have every seen.

Now I already had everything on DVD, but after seeing TNG on BR, I had to just get all that I could on BR. Particularly in the case of the Enterprise, TNG, and TOS box sets, some people complain about the packaging. Yeah, you do have to be careful of how you open them and where, lest a disk jump out and roll away from you. But other than that, not a big deal, even if the packaging is simplistic. It definitely isn't like the DVD packaging, for sure, but you know what? I am glad. It literally cut my used shelf space in half. So I am a fan of the packaging I have because I don't care about what the disks come in, just the disks themselves.

As to the disks themselves, they are the same as the previous BR release. You don't get any new content. In fact, some of the extras/interviews on the TNG BRs are the exact same as what was on the DVDs. But as for content, I watch the extras maybe once, if that. I just care about the movies or episodes.

The BR set I was impressed most with was TNG. Not only is it cheaper than buying each individual season, I was blown away at the quality of the video itself. For years I resisted going to BR, because I figured I had it of DVD, and I knew the aspect ratio would still be 4:3. I've bought BR versions of stuff I had on DVD before only to be disappointed (Looking at you T2, Predator, Aliens, and Excalibur!) . But once I saw TNG on BR for myself, I had to have it.

I am also a fan of TOS on BR. Can't decide between getting TOS original or TOS remastered? No problem, the BR has both, where you can select the version you want to see. Just awesome. Why didn't George Lucas do that years ago with the OT? This isn't the BR set's fault, but I kind of wish I got the 50th anniversary set, which included the TOS films and TAS, instead, but I didn't know about that set when I bought the BRs listed above.

The only real complaint I have is for the movie Set 1-10. Why didn't they include the directors cut of TMP and TWOK on the disk, like they did with the TOS episodes? Not that I mind all that much, but it could, and should, have been done.

I wish DS9 and Voyager would see a BR release. I read that the DVD re-releases literally just repackage the DVDs from the early 2000s. They even use the same menus. But the re-releases are way cheaper than what I paid for my sets. I've read all the reasons why they have not been transferred to BR, and I am convinced it won't happen, but I would be happy if they just took the existing DVD transfers, up scaled them digitally as best they could, and transferred them to BR, I would be happy. BR disks are tougher than DVD disks, and the sets would have less disks. Plus I don't think the DVDs look THAT bad. Totally watchable to me.

 

When you put the emphasis on "that" bad, this probably isn't the place to mention how I've still got my VHS collection, is it

Does anyone know the differences (if any) between these two sets? Quality in visuals, discs, packaging, etc?

 

While I don't own the complete TNG set (I have the single seasons), the packaging between the TNG sets should be similar, the US release has two large DVD/BD cases in a box, while the region B/UK release has the large DVD/BR cases inside a cardboard box with a lid.

The TNG box in the second link also is set on its "side" as opposed to upright like a book. I'm familiar with the packaging because I own the UK region free Enterprise series set.

If you can get a good deal on the individual seasons those are also good (standard BD cases but it's hit or miss whether you will get a slipcover).

I'm fairly certain the content on the disc themselves are identical (this was the case with Ent).
