They rejected us because we're a Star Trek fan film. They were quite apologetic about it, and one of their committee was particularly regretful. But they cited the reason behind their decision not to allow Potemkin Pictures (or any other Star Trek fan film) into the Festival this year was the fact that Paramount and CBS were suing a Star Trek fan film at the time.

Ohh. Okay. Well, NOT okay, but, okay I understand now what you were saying. :(

I'm glad that they gave you this disheartening news with compassionate apology.

Now that the lawsuit is over...at least for now...next year may provide another opportunity. I wouldn't give up hope on that forever. Give it time to let things simmer down.

I'm honestly half tempted. I joked about a list of ideas on Facebook a while back and got a far more positive response than I thought. May go further into it as I wrote half a blog about the responses I never got round to finishing.

The only thing that would stop me is expense as I'd need at least one partial set piece. I had a plan of action in my head to recycle the pieces and donate the rest to someone more deserving of them - but even then it'd mean holding a cap out and after Axanar..... I'm genuinely against that idea as, unlike the seasoned producer Alec Peters, I wouldn't ask if I had even the smallest hint that something may go wrong.

Thats a horrible side effect to have to go through. The stain of this whole thing is something that will take a while to heal. It's horrible, and all because a selfish man let his ego drive him too far over the line.

Has that been a one off or have other places put the block on fan productions?

JVC did say that fan films would be able to present at official trek cons now. However, I'm not sure that would apply to Axanar. Depedns on the settlement but I seriously doubt it.

I'd love to see Horizon presented at a Trek con. That was a seriously good fan film.

The funny thing about fan films is that most people think you need money to make them.
No, you don't (although it does help).

There is no written rule that it has to be live action. It can be drawn. It can be CGI. Hell, it can be with puppets.

I'm sure everyone has a reason why make a fan film and that reason is probably as diverse as the people that become involved.

I'm still waiting for the sequels to both that and Jews in Space (note: the Hebrew under the big guns says kosher).

That's a film I'd donate to KS or IGG to see made!

Star Trek: Aurora was very well done. Avoiding spoilers but one main character had an incident in their past which was beyond creepy but was also dealt with very well. After a while you forgot you were watching an animated show.

LOL Potemkin Pictures is proof that fan films can be made with little or no money. Our budget per episode is $150 - $200, most of which goes to set decorations, costuming and makeup.

Edit: We feed our cast and crew out of our personal pockets. And no, we don't buy sushi for lunch. We're grateful for hot dogs, sliders, pizza, asian cole slaw or whatever else my wife decides we're doing for lunch.

It is one of my all-time favorite fan film series! Tim did an outstanding job with it.
