Why does DIsney hate "Earth Star Voyager"?

Luckily those teens and tweens are slowly growing up, which allows networks previously dedicated to that sort of programming to give us stuff like Arrow and Flash, thank goodness THAT seems to be working out.

ESV's teen crew was pure Disney, of course. By then end of their two-week pilot (on first broadcast it was two, two-hour episodes, distilled to an even worse single TV-movie for subsequent showings) they had managed to get more adults onto the ship after the Captain had been spaced.

The youngest of the crew was the resident computer genius (from the same clone batch as Wesley Crusher), who was 13 at the time; the ship was to take a 27-year round trip (thirteen years one way, plus a year planned for exploration - bummer vacation in the middle of a huge road trip). Only a handful of the crew were in their twenties, including the XO who replaced the Captain and the ship's Doctor.

I never could grasp how they'd expect to make a series out of a show which apparently did not have aliens as part of its universe, and didn't expect to find any OTHER habitable planets on the way to their target, which was explicitly mentioned as the nearest habitable one. OTOH, right after leaving explored space they ran into a couple of abandoned spacecraft and sources of drama, including some weird conspiracy to colonize their target planet, but how could you get many plots out of that? Who knows if the original writers had thought of an overall plan, but unless they quickly sped up their trip, it would have been a pretty boring ride to get there.

I rather liked the concept of the young crew aging during the trip. It's doubtful it'd ever be a weekly series, but a series of TV movies would've made for a good series. The real trouble was that at the time there was something of a lull in science fiction series let alone sci,fi shows set in space, TNG really paved the way for the explosion of genre material that would follow them.

Less than 3 years later, those were all released on blu-ray. There's a nice two-pack of both Atlantis movies. So who knows, Earth Star Voyager may yet be released in some fashion. I remember watching it a LONG time ago and might watch that edited version on youtube to remind myself of the details. I enjoyed rewatching Starlost when that was released on dvd a while back, and that was pretty corny and boring at times too.

Very happy to have the links posted, I'm watching this for the first time since it aired. It - is - somewhat duller than I remembered. And the overdubbing of Ric Reid's Captain Forbes is awful. I remember hating it in 1988.

There was some good stuff in there, but I remember thinking a bunch of people tapping away on computer keyboards to be visually uninteresting. No matter how realistic that may have been. The Admiral baddie was kind of an idiot. Good pacing in the finale and the Lalo Schifrin music score for that sequence (and the theme) were excellent. Most of the time, it was synth droning, but for the high drama and rah rah moments, he really did well.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but you guys don't seem to know that there's a legitimate Trek connection to ESV. The director of ESV had directed "Where No Man Has Gone Before" 22 years earlier.

The most annoying thing about him was he kept talking to himself after giving orders and closing the intercom. Every single time. A very clumsy way of letting viewers into his head.

I never heard of this show but it does remind me of a show that sounds similiar that stared Nicole DeBour(Ezril Dax) and the actor who played the engineer on "Andromeda" plus some other people. They also were cloned humans living in space and I think they were supose to bring back the human race that had died off.

I am surprise to hear that someone hasn't ever heard about "Earth 2." I thought that had been a well known show. Granted I also think "Space Above and Beyond" was also a well known show so I might be wrong.

The truth is that Disney's execs don't give a rat's arse about Earth Star Voyager and The Black Hole anymore because they have Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy. Just like Disney's execs don't give a rat's arse about Tron and The Rocketeer anymore because they have Marvel and Indiana Jones.

Their apathy toward ESV and TBH long pre-dated their Lucasfilm and Marvel acquisitions. They had decades to put ESV out on DVD and never did. Tron and Rocketeer on the other hand, haven't been treated that badly. Both have received DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Didn't they just release a new edition of Tron sometime in the last couple years? I swear I remember being shocked when I saw a new edition on Amazon's coming soon page for DVD and Blu-Ray, but I don't remember when I saw it.

Tron got a Blu-ray release in 2011 at the same time Tron: Legacy was released on BR.

Disney has always been about tightly controlling their brand and limiting availability whenever possible so they can make a big event of every release. Whereas other companies might turn out anything that might make them some small margin, Disney's not going to because it wouldn't be a 'Release event' or anything like that.

I suppose all rights to these movies belong to you and that's why you've posted them here.
