Maybe John Simm's Master is in the Vault?

I think someone from 1963 is in the vault. My first two bets are Susan or the First Doctor.

Susan being in the vault would be interesting. Maybe The Doctor found her near death, and is keeping her in the vault to keep her alive? But, honestly, if the thing in the vault is something other people would want (and The Doctor implied that), I doubt it could be Susan. It might be The Master, though I'm hoping that the Simm Master ends up being a surprise for The Doctor when he shows up.

Out of all the guesses I've seen, Susan makes the most sense at the moment for being inside the Vault. Especially when you factor in all the constant cuts to her photo, given how subtle Moffat has proven he's not.
Quite the opposite for me. I found Clara a much better character when she was with Smith than when she was with Capaldi.

It's been quite a while since I watched last season. What promise was the Doctor alluding to when he was reluctant to go travelling with Bill?

^ The promise to keep whatever/whoever's in the Vault in it, no matter what.

My guess is the promise has happened off screen, in-between series. We will probably get more information about it and the Vault later on...

I don't think it's Susan in the vault. Is she really a threat? Or valuable?
I'm going with something weird: Gallifrey. It's in a pocket universe inside the vault.

Thanks. I don't know why I didn't pick up on that in the episode. Thanks to all who answered.

When was the last time time it was in a vault?
Or do you mean Gallifrey being, again, in a pocket universe--now that we've seen it in the FAR FUTURE back in the the universe?
This IS a time travel show. Who is to say that the Doctor didn't watch over the pocket universe for a time? This is billions of years before Hell Bent.

Being in a pocket universe again. Though it seems silly that "hiding" at the end of time (restaurant at the end of the universe?) would be total proof against the Daleks finding them.

As far as the actual pocket universe, wasn't it simply the Curator's painting that held Gallifrey?

I would be interested to see how the Timelords managed to (seemingly) get out on their own, being frozen and all.

I don't think they were "frozen". It sounds that way if you hear the description but I think it was more like they were living outside of our time and cut off from the rest of the universe.

In the lap of squalor I assure you.
They were hiding on the other side of a time crack on that Christmas Planet, waiting for word that it was safe to come back.

The Doctor left them hanging for a thousand years, like a boss.

SO.....since we never saw the time crack during Tennant's, nor Eccelston's run, does that mean the crack was created by the violent regeneration of 10 to 11 (and then spreading backward and forward in time)?

Seems to me the constant cuts to Susan's picture (which I love that he has on his desk, btw) and having it next to River's photo means that he's thinking, after all this time, about family... Something's up, whatever it is, and the events of the last couple of seasons have him feeling his years (despite having a new set of regenerations)... When we feel like that, we get nostalgic for the people (especially family), that we've lost or have left behind.

I can't imagine that Susan won't play a role in this season, somehow.. At least, that is what I'm hoping.

See, I'm suggesting that it isn't "again" but, rather the time that it WAS....
If I'm right--and I'm totally not right--then maybe at the end of this series, the Doctor returns Gallifrey to the Universe... so they can be there in the future to capture him in his past.
We never did see (not that I really care) how they came back to the Universe.

Not much left at the end. Maybe better to go hide at the beginning...

    No. It's just a painting.

Just watched it last night, as I have little desire to watch the episodes at this point, more obligation...

But aside from the Bill intro (and I think she's a great character so far, but a little too much like Rose), it seemed like about every other Capaldi episode. A horror show with little drippings of sci-fi sprinkled in. A scary monster who wanted to attack and scream and kill until the very end when they found out she was just really sad and misunderstood.

I liked it for a season opener and an introduction to the new companion. It was a lot more leisurely than the "Lets run away quickly from the incredible danger" Rose intro.
The three have an interesting dynamic which I look forward to seeing evolve.
Capaldi has been given a horrible run of scripts with his tenure- a couple of great episodes but most were garbage. He deserves a good season
