Anyone still using it in any fashion? I'm trying to install it onto a spare SSD drive to see how it performs with my current hardware but I keep getting a windows stop screen just as it's in the process of "starting windows" just near the end of the blue screen where its installing all the drivers and shit. Motherboard is an MSI 970 gaming It keeps saying it has stopped to protect hardware but there shouldn't be any issues with any of the hardware.
Newer hardware will no longer support Windows XP. Microsoft has been working to phase it out of hardware support entirely. It's not a good idea, honestly, to be running Windows XP on a machine connected to the internet.
It's not networked.. Not yet. I actually figured out the issue. It was the BIOS. I had it set in AHCI mode and it should have been in IDE mode and once that change had been made XP installed fine. Sound drivers are in and now I have to figure out video card drivers, or find an old cheap card that might be supported. Now I wish I had kept that GTX 550 Ti as that would have worked with older drivers.
I have machines with 3.1, 95, 98SE and Win2K, no current XP machine in my inventory, also no Vista machines, you can use XP but indeed NOT connected to the web. I wouldn't connect a Win2K machine to the internet either, as for 98SE and so, a little less risk but only because the machines are too slow and have not enough memory to run a modern virus..
Oh this won't be an internet machine. It will just be for running old games, it's going to be only temporary as I won't even let it go online for activation. I'll wait out the 30 days and then reformat the SSD. It's just to play a couple of old games I found which I am a bit desp to relive again.

A bit of both....... But I wanted proper dos emulation and XP provides that. Anyway the game I wanted to do has come near to its end so the SSD will be reformated tomorrow and put back into its box.
I've got an old dell laptop here running it fine, mainly for a couple of specialist printers, and the diagnostic cable for the car. It still gets updates (there's a registry hack that identifies the machine as a WePOS system, which are still updated). It does go online, but there's nothing personal or sensitive on it, and if it got virused, I can reload it from a pendrive quickly enough.
One thing I did notice was the speed of XP on an SSD. It's faster then 10 to boot. Bigger footprint though.
I heart XP (so much) and use it offline for old software frequently. I got Rogue Squadron 3D mostly working yesterday on XP - just in time for May the Fourth. Lemme tell ya - that game is NOT easy to get running on a modern PC. It's also impossible to emulate on any N64 emulators. Such a shame as it was a breakthrough game at the time and a hell of a nostalgia trip to play now - even if it only runs at the lowest resolution possible! Yeah, it's best not to be online with XP. I'm running it on an old iMac, always certain to switch the internet off while Parallels is running. DOSbox is great, when the software cooperates. If it doesn't, it's nice to have XP to fall back on.
Windows XP doesn't have activation issues, but if your pc was still receiving updates, which it's not, you'd have a problem called WGA, if you're not using a genuine copy of XP.
It was a genuine disk. Speaking of games what about the Wing Commander games, those things were HORRIBLE to get working right.
Did you know that you can boot, loading the sound card drivers in DOS, then Ctrl-Alt-Delete and hold shift to bypass the autoexec, and the sound card driver won't show as loaded (or appear to use RAM on a mem command or more importantly to games or apps), but you will somehow still have sound in games? To this day, I have almost no idea why that works. But it does.
I did not know that. The things you learn, that's very cool. Probably because the drivers are using a protected area of ram at a guess.
