What if Gene Roddenberry lived to a ripe old age?

As per Shaw--he lent it out to a production house. Then too--I wonder if Rod might have it secretly

Maybe he donated it to his local lodge, or the one in D.C.

Is 70 not considered a "ripe old age" then?

A Roddenberry in better health might well have tried to use TNG's success to launch new shows, perhaps going back to the PAX well (as eventually happened in a very mutated form with Andromeda), I don't think he completely gave up on that one as bits of it show up in TNG, with the emphasis on a non-military Starfleet and the devastating mid-21st century Nuclear holocaust which wrecked earth, now whether any new creation would be worth a flip is a crap-shoot

Off on a tangent, but I loved how PAX turns up in Alternate Rise of the Blockbuster and due to there being no TNG in this universe it is a success.

That's the only proper way to get the job done.

Personally, I think that Gene would have had a legacy similar to George Lucas. Both are considered "great" for their creations of their respective series, but both began to take a revised view of their own shows and their own histories as time passed until eventually, the films/shows would have declined into oblivion or been taken over by other individuals.

How so? The last SW project Lucas did was The Clone Wars series. It was the most popular series on Cartoon Network, and was still running after 5 seasons when Lucas sold his company.

Ripe old age does not equal average life expectancy, either.

In 2012 the average male life expectancy in the United States was 78,74 years. In 1991 when Roddenberry died, the average age was 75.37. But that just means that for every man who was older than 75.37 when he died, there was another man who died younger than that age.

Hypothetically, he will die in 2018 at the ripe old age of 97.:techman:

Yeah that's more like it. I think the expression "ripe old age" is meant for really older folks, like around the 100 year mark. Used in another context is probably a joke, eg: She went on to win the online tournament, becoming the world champion of StarCraft: Ghost at the ripe old age of 23.

GR living for longer would likely have meant that folks like Leonard Maizlish and Richard Arnold would've continued to have a largely negative influence on Trek and its ancillary products. The shows, novels, and comics would have continued to go downhill, as talented people like Robert Justman, D.C. Fontana, David Gerrold, Tracy Torme, and Peter David were driven away by their interference.

Did some of those TOS veterans ever come back to late TNG? or any of the spin offs?

It seems to me that Gene wanted to be seen as more than just a one-trick-pony. I think if he had stuck around that he would have again wanted to use the exposure of Trek to springboard one of his other projects. So I can definitely see things like Andromeda and Earth: Final Conflict coming about, just with Gene's direct involvement.
