I finally got around to seeing it last week. I live in Germany but I wanted to see it first in English so that often means waiting for the Blu Ray then waiting for time to watch it.
Anyway I liked it. Much better than I thought it would be after seeing the trailer. I liked the writing better on this one. I liked the references to the TV show. 4/5

    Mentally? . . . that's debatable.
Some DVD/Blue Ray numbers from STB are becoming available. These are dated from November but in its first week it made $15 million and another $5 million the second week.

In comparison, STID made $36 it's first week of release and another $6 million the 2nd. ST2009 made $81 million the first weekend and another $15 million in week two.

In fairness, DVD sales are WAY down since 2009 and 2013. I'm curious what the digital download sales of Beyond are. I know Into Darkness was the #3 digital download of 2013.

All physical media sales for movies are way down in the past decade. The only fair measure is a contemporary comparison to rival films.

Even digital downloads are not a sufficient substitute for analysis as streaming has made serious inroads into downloading revenue.

This is Star Trek related. I purchased a copy of the full TNG box set and season 4 had all the wrong episodes printed on the label for that volume. Purchased this at JB HIFI and after looking at 3 replacement sets They all had the same problem.

I thought Paramount was the distribulor here in Australia but it turns out it's Sony. No joy with phone calls. Can a whole batch of items be bad?

Beyond's totals are up to $22 million now.

Yes, Home Video revenue has greatly decreased from its heyday. Anything between $40-50 million for Beyond would be tremendous.

Digital downloads have increased (and are virtually all profit) but they are still just a fraction of home video. I think I read something like 10% of home media a year or two ago. That number might be higher now but we still aren't talking about something that can replace the loss of DVD/BluRay revenue from just 5 years ago for the industry.

I wonder why that is, I'd assume that most people buy or rent new movies digitally these days.

This is from last August, but here's a podcast about the effects work on Star Trek Beyond, with the reasoning behind modifying the Enterprise and the warp and transporter effects. Click!

Some of those pop-out console modules on the Kelvin look like the ones salvaged from Delta Vega in Where No Man Has Gone Before.

Increasingly as convenience replaces longevity, my predilection for physical media seems to isolate me from my peers. If a film or series is something I see myself coming back to for repeated enjoyment there will undoubtedly be a disc purchase involved...however, some people cannot get over the cumbersome nature of taking something out of a package, placing it in a machine and having that one program be their primary source of entertainment for a short while. "Instant access" is the new normal. However, for those that live in areas with less than stellar download and streaming capability, physical media is still the way to go.

There is also the ongoing conundrum of "Best quality version" and "brand exclusive" extra content for us physical media people to contend with. (that which has plagued the Kelvin DVD blu-ray releases)

I wonder how they are recorded...I bought a digital download, but that lets me watch a HD download on my TV, while they send a DVD in SD to me through the post...does that count as both Kindandental of sale or one or the other? Admittedly I only know one set up that does this...usually it's buya blu Ray and get a digital copy free.
