Damn right Star Trek Beyond was robbed. STB had incredible prosthetic work. Krall, Jaylah, Kalara, and Syl were amazing. Aside from Killer Croc, Suicide Squad painted "Damaged" on Jared Leto's forehead and they get the Oscar.

I know awards don't matter and this is a rant but still! Star Trek Beyond should've won. Anyone else a little annoyed by this? Were there movies that didn't get nominated for Makeup and Hair-styling that should have?

Honestly, no — not really annoyed. While it would have been nice to see Star Trek win, I think the nomination was industry acknowledgement for the work done. Also remember that Trek (and Joel Harlow) won that same award for the 2009 movie, which may have been a factor in the decision give the award to someone else this time.

Did Star Trek Beyond merit the award? I think the nomination is a clear indication that it did. Was the makeup superior to that used in Suicide Squad? It would be easy to make a case for "more varied" or "more elaborate," but better? That's subjective, and always will be.

One thing I've seen wayyy too many times already since the broadcast, though:

    But_her_makeuuuuuuup.jpg
As if Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was the peak example and full extent of the makeup used in Suicide Squad, while everything in Star Trek was on par with the example on the left. Yeah, that's evidence Star Trek Beyond was robbed, all right. [/sarcasm] If there's a case to be made, Trek fans ought to be able to come up with a stronger, more honest, and more imaginative argument than this.

Just my two cents. Carry on.

Hell, given some of the interior shots and sets for the Yorktown base, ST:B COULD/SHOULD have also been nominated for VFX and production design as well, but wasn't

I was rooting for BEYOND, of course, but the other movie won. It happens.

Mind you, I'm still bitter that "The Morning After" beat "Ben" for Best Song back in 1972. :)

While I agree it should have won, I'm neither surprised or annoyed. Keep in mind the people who vote on the winners are very exclusive - basically a cult of Hollywood's most rich and powerful. Many of them probably didn't even watch the movie(s).

Don't you consider the nomination itself an honor at all? I just think it has its own intrinsic value as from now on, it'll be known as Acadamy Award Nominated Star Trek Beyond.

(There's an obligatory pun in here somewhere about Margot Robbie robbing the award but I'm too tired to put it together...)

... Considering how all of these awards are "won", not surprised. Suicide Squad clearly wined and dined the powers that be more so than Star Trek Beyond . That IS how it's done... rarely if ever are movie or acting awards granted on the basis of merit.

Well, ST09 won the hair and make-up Oscar back in 2010. So, it's not like Trek is hurting to be recognized for their works. I just don't think Trek had as much going for it as Suicide Squad this time. Jaylah and Krall played big parts to play, but Kalara and Syl were bit players with few lines and short appearances. Compared to the work done on Joker, Harley, Enchantress, Croc, the monsters, El Diablo and the roles they all played in Suicide Squad. The scales seemed to have been tip in Squad's favor.

When everything is politicized, little is voted on merit.

Clearly. Anyone glancing at both pictures can see that Beyond used more makeup and therefore deserved the award.

Not sure they grade on quantity! :)

I note also that the third nominee, whose name escapes me, seems to have been nominated for the quality of its old-age makeup. I'm glad a genre move won instead, since that's more fun, but it's perhaps worth recalling that "Best Makeup" is not necessarily about the most or most exotic aliens or mutants or whatever.

Yes, let's make a new award... "Most makeup used." Then watch as makeup keeps getting caked on thicker and thicker with each new movie until the actors are covered in so much makeup that they end up looking like the people in this Leonard Cohen video:

To be kind, the Academy Awards are a politicized sham.

Not bothered by not "winning," and not impressed by the nomination.

That whole process and the event itself is a dystopian joke.

Honestly? Suicide Squat deserved it over Beyond.

Not meintioning the quality of the movie overall. Just the make-up. The make-up of Killer Croc alone was lightyears beyond (huehue) that of "Krall". Killer Croc could emote. Krall? Not so much, his make-up was pretty stiff. Jaylah? Interesting character. But her make-up was more "tv-show" than "movie". And the various extras? Yeah. They looked nice. If you didn't look too close. Because what they were supposed to be: extras.

Suicide Squat on the other hand? I didn't like that movie too much. Or the general art direction. But goddamn they went all in with their production design. Wether you watch Harley Quinn, El Diablo, Killer Croc, Enchantress or the alien goons: The make-up was good (the CGI of Entchantress brother? Not so much...) Every character was insantly recognisable and distinct. It looked fantastical, while being grounded in reality at the same time. You always knew which part of the character's design was permanent (Harley's skin, Diablos tatoos), what was just dust and dirt, what where wounds - wounds that looked realistic and good.

Honestly? The right one won this oscar. Star Trek had more intricate alien designs. But in every other aspect regarding make-up Suicide Squad was vastly superiour. It's an Oscar for a technical achievement. And whatever Suicide Squad was a creative let-down: It's production was top notch, and deserved that Oscar.

Reading the title of this thread I thought some extremist suicide squad robbed the sets of Star Trek Beyond. Funny stuff.

The award definitely went to the right people. But, like others mentioned, it should have won an Oscar for Yorktown. It was the best piece in that department since Avatar. I was actually dumbfounded it wasn't even nominated.

I thought Croc looked terrible at that. These guys should have looked at Arkham Origins' version before settling on his design. And Leto's pimped out Joker? Just awful. Now he's a meth fiend who runs a strip club. Oh how the supremely insane have fallen.
