While feasible, I think it'll feel a bit of a downgrade regarding his role from part of Kirk's inner circle to down somewhere in engineering that they decided to mention once in a while. I mean yes, he had a stint replacing Scotty but even then Into Darkness gave him a bit of an onscreen presence because he's an important member of the crew. Just mentioning he's in the ship...Would raise some eyebrows. It'll be like saying Spock and Bone are in the Enterprise B in the start of Generations...But they got lost walking around the cargo area the entire trip.
I'd be fine with the next movie not mentioning Chekov but letting the comics deal with his fate. Write him out, they can even use him as a supporting character just based somewhere besides the Enterprise.
Bring back Walter Koenig and have the film open with Chekov being the only crewmen infected with the Kelvin Timeline version of the "Deadly Years" plague. Then they cure it but he's stuck an old man.
Even though she got little more than a name check in ST09, they expressly removed Chapel from the ship in STID. This is the most likely way it will be addressed. If they want to continue using him in the comics, then it will be a leave of absence, maybe for security or weapons officer retraining per TMP, or more engineering retraining - something that will not overwrite any character they bring in to sit at navigation in the next movie - otherwise transfer to the Reliant makes sense. Personally, I'd still like to see Chapel get some love as a medical archeologist or bio-researcher rather than just a nurse. If they want to re-use Carol maybe both ladies could be a hook into an adventure on the frontier next time round. Who knows how Hemsworth is going to be involved after all - time travel, flashbacks, robot duplicate?
Guys, infrequent poster here, but I have an off the wall idea for this. Just think about it for a second: How about casting Elijah Wood as Chekov? He's got similar features as Anton and could almost pass for his brother. I think he could pull it off if they gave him a shot. If you do a Google image search for Elijah Wood and Anton Yelchin, there are some photos where they have similar expressions. Maybe I don't want to live with the idea that there will be no Chekov, but I think it's an interesting proposal.
They have been saying the character would not be recast for some time. They can just reassign Chekov to another ship within the story. They may just do that in the comics and may or may not mention Chekov in the next movie.
Nothing. I'm sure it's a poor choice of words on the poster's part. Pretty sure they meant they'd like to see her use her other skills. Aside from a brief mention of her past vocation in TOS and her eventually becoming a doctor, we don't see her using research knowledge much, just practical skills. Not saying she doesn't have them...
Paul has rather extensive ideas for expanding the roles of certain previously minor characters, notably those of Chapel and Rand. He'll talk your ear off, if given half a chance.
Exactly yes. She's a scientist (research biologist, possibly also an exoarcheologist and paleobiologist from her work with Korby), and a trainee doctor not ONLY a nurse. She generally is portrayed as McCoy's assistant rather than someone taking an active lead under his supervision. If she's 'just' a nurse, she can only either occupy the space already occupied by McCoy and only then in a subservient capacity, play a victim (as she often did in her larger roles in TOS), or stray into love interest territory, which in the movies, is reserved for Kirk and Spock. Give the women a break! Chekov on the other hand is a navigator, maths genius, transporter expert, and chief engineer at age 18. He's basically so good it makes perfect sense to promote him off the ship. Personally, I'd rather they didn't as I would still like to see Anton on the Enterprise in the comics. True dat. Albeit I take issue with reference to them as 'minor' characters in the context of TOS. Rand was the female lead for part of the show before Grace was fired, appearing in 2/3 of the first part of the season, and Chapel appeared in more episodes than Chekov if you include TAS. They only become minor characters in the movie era.
Right. But this is a thread about Chekov. Rather than hijack it to once again make your case for all the wonderful things you feel TPTB ought to be doing with the characters of Chapel and Rand, perhaps you could start a thread dedicated to that topic. In Fan Fiction, perhaps, or maybe Future of Trek?
My response did contain something abut Chekov as did my initial comment, which was comparing how they might deal with Chekov in a similar way to Chapel. The rest was just responding to what others had commented. You can ignore or not at your option but if you want to get the thread back on track more quickly, just ignore it. ;-P
Depends on how realistic TPTB depict the job of a nurse. In large clincs, in hospitals, and in the military nurses are the ones running the show and their jobs are very wide ranging, the doctors have fairly narrow roles to play.
