    In the ST universe somehow humanity gets over the shock of aliens and does not try to bbq the Vulcans. In a real world situation we would shoot on sight and instead of treating brown people like dirt, we would treat green people like dirt instead. There would be no Terrancentric Federation, other advanced worlds would not want us in it. Reminds me of a ST Myriad universe novel lol

    I doubt that. We'd more likely *keep* the conventional racism, and just add the xenophobia on top of it. People like that seem to have no shortage of hate to go around.

    Well The Donald plans to cut humanitarian spending and spend more on the military by 10%, that's what the USA really needs even more nuclear weapons and other military arms. Why destroy your planet with 100 bombs, when you can do it with 200!

    When you have no decent policies to offer, appeal to your citizens sense of national pride and vanity, especially when they are economically deprived and you intend to keep them that way. It's a good thing doctors don't operate this way!

    And yet Trump and other populist/nationalist/arguably xenophobic convervative leaders seem to have tried to reach out to Jewish and gay and lesbian voters and to at least moderate their factions' positions on issues relating to them or get more broad and substantial inclusion of those groups although they still seem to be not taken very seriously in that and not get a lot of electoral support.

    You mean like Trump's having to be asked repeatedly about a frightening rash of anti-semitic incidents -- including bomb threats at Jewish Community Centers and the desecration of Jewish cemeteries -- before he would even acknowledge them? And he still hasn't really denounced them.

    Or his rolling back protection for trans kids?

    Yeah, that's reaching out all right. :rolleyes:

    Yeah that kind of thing has happened here too in the past. Politicians "reach out" when they are forced to address an issue they don't care about, or want to care about. That's reaching out alright. :barf:

    More often: words are used to placate or distract. The president, like many politicians before him, use this to great effect.

    It's why I don't watch the sunday morning talking heads. I don't care if they have Paul Ryan on there, or how rare it is to get a sitting speaker on the air. He's not on TV to inform. He's on there to sell. And since I already know what he wants, I don't need to watch his focus-grouped-to-bland-perfection sales pitch again.

    Insert your most/least favorite politician into the above paragraph.
