TNG suffered a WGA writers strike. [The strike, which ran from March 7 to August 7, 1988, affected production on movies and TV shows. At 155 days, it remains the longest strike in the Guild's history,]
If another happens in 2017 how will Discovery season 2 be affected?

Well.........if they are smart, and since I think 2 seasons have already been ordered, wouldn't the heavy writing pretty much be done before the strike?

Perhaps the production approach for streaming content differs to broadcast television? I have no idea. No reason to think it should be exactly the same... but it would be ironic if it was delayed or maybe we will see a Shades of Grey type episode in Discovery?

If by that you mean a clip-show, I think the days for that are in the past. The main purpose for them was to meet an episode quota for the season while saving money or meeting a close deadline. This was in the days when shows were concerned with increasing their episode count to get into syndication. These days in 10-15 episode seasons it's more likely that if the budget ran out, that would just mean less episode(s) for that season.

Besides, the defense that clip shows help people get to speed on the show and its storylines doesn't even hold up in this day and age, what with streaming. Especially Discovery, which is made for a streaming service.

With everything the way it is, they may not even get the first season done by the time the strike takes place.

Another possible WGA strike again? The last time it happened was back in 2008.

Contrary to myth, "Shades of Gray" had nothing to do with the writers' strike. The strike was the previous year, affecting the end of season 1 and the start of season 2. Writers' strikes are rare, but clip shows are a routine practice in television, and they still need people to write the frame story around the clips. Clip shows are done to save money, pure and simple. "Shades of Gray" happened because the producers needed to go over budget on a couple of earlier episodes in the season, including "Q Who," and the studio would only agree to that if they balanced it out by doing a money-saving clip show later on. If anything, it's remarkable that it was the only clip show they ever did. Most other first-run syndicated series of the '80s and '90s did clip shows at least once a season, built into their budgets from the start.

Season 1 is paid for an filming, the outsourcing of the CGI to a specific team means they're gearing up for post production, it'll be out in September. The scripts are pinned for the season and the arc already covered. Airing rights and deals have been done.

So yes, they'll be starting pre-production planning for season 2 and probably 3 in rough form over the course of filming season 1, so that they can get to work on them in short order.

Most shows have the next season at least partly prepared for while the previous one is airing, just how it's done.

How can they plan for seasons that haven't yet been announced? Doesn't the show actually have to be renewed first?

Why don't we see how Season One does, and is received before we worry about Season Two? ;)

Season One will suddenly become 8 episodes. Season Two will consist of 7 episodes.

related to the WGA contract and potential strike is the IATSE craft unions contract

IATSE and AMPTP Reached a Tentative Agreement, But at Least One Local Is Poised to Reject It

I wonder if in Canada a work stoppage would occur on STD season2?

Well last week they were shooting Episode 10 of 13, so they're more then half way through Season 2, so I doubt this will effect Season 2 much at all.

It would have more of an impact on Season 3 depending on when whatever happens actually happens.

That depends on whether its writing staff are part of the WGA or not. If they do belong to the WGA, then they can't work during a strike, regardless which country their show is produced in. If there's enough of their writers belonging to the WGA, then yes, that could shut down the show for the duration of the strike.

For example, during the strike in 2008, both BSG and Stargate Atlantis were in production in Vancouver. Since the majority of BSG's writing staff were members of the WGA, they had to shut down. Stargate Atlantis meanwhile only had one writer on its staff with the WGA, so it continued production with one less writer coming to work.

Episode 10? How's that possible? When Harberts and Berg got fired, they just finished shooting episode 5. They have just started shooting again after a planned hiatus. They're now working on episode 6 and will continue to shoot until November.

Frakes was shooting 2 weeks ago, so unless they’re shooting episodes out of order, that is weird. His episodes this season are 2 and 10.

I guess it could have been pick up shots? But they usually have other directors for that kind of thing.

That is weird. Maybe he's shooting one of the Short Treks?

Depending what episode 10 is about. If it's a small character driven piece, doesn't require a lot of prep, is a true stand alone episode, can be done with second unit, they may very well shoot it out of order.
