    - Pine & Quinto are contracted
    - Chris Hemsworth is to return as George Kirk, apparantly JJ has a 'really cool idea'
    - They're still working out what to do about Chekov's absence (poor Anton :( ) but he WON'T be recast
    - McKay & Payne have been rehired for the screenplay

A release date hasn't been confirmed but rumour has it 2019. Is that all that's known?

PARAMOUNT PICTURES, SKYDANCE AND BAD ROBOT

ANNOUNCE A FOURTH “STAR TREK” FILM

CHRIS PINE AND CAST TO BE JOINED BY CHRIS HEMSWORTH, WHO RETURNS TO THE BLOCKBUSTER FRANCHISE AS GEORGE KIRK

HOLLYWOOD, CA (July 18, 2016) – Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot today announced that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will return to the big screen for another voyage.

In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.

Chris Hemsworth, who appeared in 2009’s “STAR TREK,” will return to the space saga as George Kirk to star alongside Pine.

The remaining cast is expected to return.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.

2019 is quite an anniversary year for Trek (not that anyone was that bothered about 2016) TOS end 50, TMP 40, TFF 30, GEN 25, STXI 10

Why do we have to wait three to four years between these Trek films? What ever happened to two?

Complexity of production. Costs. And actors who have other projects who aren't waiting around for the next installment of the only thing on their agenda.

Paramount really has to figure out a way to narrow that window. It is the only way the feature film franchise is going to gain traction now.

Unfortunately for Trek fans, Paramount has more fundamental problems about studio management than just Trek, important as Trek is to the bottom line.

I agree. But the mismanagement of the feature film franchise is one of the indicators that Paramount doesn't have a clue on how to hook current movie goers. If they hadn't lucked into the Transformers franchise they'd likely be extinct by now.

The delay between 09 and ID was to keep Abrams, wasn't it? And then between ID and Beyond because they fired Orci and tossed his script, forcing them to start all over.

This time I'm sure Beyond's disappointing returns have something to do with the lack of news. Would make sense if they are waiting to see how much the dvd/blu/digitals bring in and possibly Discovery's reception/views as well before budgeting and beginning pre production on 4/14.

Actually, it was because Orci kept dragging his ass writing the script. Also, him and Lindelof actually wasted an entire year arguing over whether or not they should bring Khan back.

It may not be official; that is, they may be preparing something in the event that the other scriptwriters' idea is rejected. Or perhaps they either earned enough capital writing for Beyond that somebody else wants them to tackle another project, or they just simply like writing together and are coming up with something else unrelated on their own.

Unlikely. Paramount would have to shell out a sizable chunk of cash to Pegg at least, because of his well-known status as actor/writer. They wouldn't hire him and Jung as a backup plan if they weren't prepared to pay for their script to be THE script for the film.

I think they'll give Star Trek: Discovery some room to establish itself. Also, with no announcement of a director as of Feb 2017, it rules out a release date for next year.

They're two different companies --- CBS and Paramount -- producing two competing products. I suspect Paramount isn't thinking twice about whether Discovery gets a cushy start.
