General Rieekan was a citizen of Alderaan, Leia is of Alderaan's royal family. How does that not make her his superior.
    Pretty much, yeah.

    Isn't the answer obvious?

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is Leia Organa. Leia Organa is a princess from the planet Alderaan. But Leia Organa lives on the planet Hoth. Now think about it; that does not make sense! Why would a princess, a 5-foot-tall princess, want to live on Hoth, with a bunch of 10-foot-tall wampas? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this thread? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this thread! It does not make sense!"

It kept us entertained while we were waiting for new episodes of Rebels.

Well, as it has been asked, where else would she be?

This is kind of like getting into "Does the Federation have money?" If you were watching the original material at the time then the answer is obvious. If you are looking at it through the lens of forty years of other expanded material, movies, and TV series it gets more muddled.

General Reiken was the general at Hoth Base. And in the movie he's seen deferring to Leia at every turn. This is the only time and place that we ever see General Reiken.

In Star Wars there was only ONE Rebel Base. And after it is found in Star Wars they have to move to another one (or have moved to several other ones) in The Empire Strikes Back. But there is still only one base. When the Imperials find A Rebel Base then Vader says "And I'm sure Skywalker is with them." Because there is only one base.

Luke and Leia are there because they can't be anywhere else and be in the Rebellion. (Han has apparently gotten his foot stuck in the door and is having a hard time leaving.)

We can guess that Han and Leia (and Luke?) have had other adventures between movies because of the "bounty hunter we ran into on Ord Mandell" line. But it's a guess.

But even with all of the EU stuff (pre or post Disney) where else would she be? I guess another question is where is Mon Mothma? (Nowhere. She hasn't been written yet. Just think, this is back when all of the Rebels' ships are old and outdated, before there was this rogue aerospace manufacturing company that stole every x-wing ever.)

I generally always thought Vader was sensing a Skywalker vibe through the Force, not unlike the feeling he got when on Luke's tail in the Death Star battle in Star Wars. It's the same feeling that causes Vader to chase after the Falcon when it escapes Hoth and that convinces Vader that the Falcon crew is still alive, even when his commanders think they've been destroyed, but he has mistaken Leia for Luke.

Of course, if that is so, then why did it take so long for Vader to realize the reason why he'd chased after the wrong ship, which was that he'd had two children instead of only one? And, why didn't he pick up the Skywalker vibe from Leia in the first film, say as he was interrogating her? Maybe something was stirred in Vader only once Ben arrived with the Falcon on the Death Star, at the moment he first felt Ben's presence.

Another possibility that occurred to me at some point over the years is that the probe droid picked up radio chatter indicating Luke's presence. Luke says the name "Han" on the radio right after watching the probe crash, so maybe the probes were programmed to recognize certain keywords known to be associated with Luke, such as the first name of the captain of the ship Luke had boarded the Death Star with.

And, also of course, you could indeed be right, that Vader was simply convinced that Luke would stick with the Rebels.

If there are still multiple Rebel cells at multiple bases once we hit ESB then maybe they just figured out that Echo Base was being used by the cell The Big Three were a part of.

That does not give Leia the right to assume command of Echo Base. Echo Base was an outpost of the Rebel Alliance, not Alderaan. It's one thing for Rieekan to be respectful of her. It's another to allow her to assume control of the base.

Because Leia was not inadvertently using the Force, like Luke did during the Battle of Yavin. Vader didn't notice Luke because of some "Skywalker vibe". He noticed Luke, because the latter was using the Force to guide him to the very spot that would lead to the Death Star's destruction.

There was never any scene in which Leia assumed command of the base.

Let me ask this again. If all you're gonna do is refute everyone's answers. Why even ask in the first place?

I wouldn't use the word "refute." There's been no proof that Leia's presence on Hoth is not perfectly rational. There hasn't been anything even approaching a refutation.

I don't think she assumed it. I think she just was. Nobody gives Leia orders. But she gives a few. Including to Reiken. They don't ask Reiken's permission to close the shield doors. They need Leia's approval.

I also think that there's nothing to indicate that Rieekan was subordinate to Leia, when Leia was talking to Han about how Rieekan thinks it's dangerous for any ship to leave until they'd activated the energy shield. It really sounds like she was presenting it to Han as if she was deferring to Rieekan's advice, not because he outranks her but because he's the military expert.

Indeed, the only time I even remember her exerting any authority was when she was briefing the pilots. And even then, presumably Rieekaan was busy and she was just helping out.

Though, ironically in Family Guy's ESB parody they do have one of the pilots ask "shouldn't we be talking to someone actually in the military?"

Perhaps Rieeken was overseeing the evacuation? The evacuation was stated to be the primary mission, not a military victory. Leia, the ground troops and Rogue Squadron were all just the rear-guard action delaying the Empire long enough for the bulk of the fleet and transports to escape.

It makes more sense that Rieeken was directing the battle while Leia was organising the evacuation and run on the blockade.

Leia was seen ordering troops to protect the fighters that were to cover the transports just before Vader invaded the base. She then gave the final evacuation signal before being practically dragged out of the ruined control room by Han Solo. All of her scenes just before and during the Battle of Hoth involved the evacuation., from informing the fighter pilots of what they were going to do and about the Ion Cannon, overseeing the first transport escape. Confiring with Rieeken about sending two transports at a time because they were running out of time. Ordering the evacuation of the remaining ground staff right after that. Then finally doing everything possible to make sure the last transports could get away. After she was cut off and Han took her to the Falcon, then she had nothing really to do since she's become a passenger. Even then she tried to do stuff. Solo is about the only person she can't give orders.
