...or (3), he wanted to achieve an ownership situation by a lengthy period where the money was being put into facility offices, infrastructure, staff who are out recruiting partners, etc., "rent to own" on the donor's dime.

Its not my impression this was ever about saving (i.e., *not* spending on infrastructure) money once the major donations came in.

zebra. zygote. Zanzibar. Take your pick.

I think we're all losing the forest for the trees here. Nobody gave a flying f about economizing. They felt they were playing with house money.

If I wanted to really build a studio, while we were looking for retirement property a year ago we ran across 3 acres, 2,000 sq ft home with a few 500 to 700 sq ft shops off the Salmon river. In the front of the property was a 3,500 sq ft auditorium with stage with a large parking lot. The nearby town is almost empty due to the mines shutting down but you're not far from Sun Valley. The price tag was around $170,000, off a main highway.
I had little interest because who wants to drive for 20 miles for gas? But if you wanted to have an ongoing studio, add a few guest cabins because you'll probably find actors willing to film for 10 days for a 30 day stay in a prime vacation spot.
If you minded your P's and Q's and did what you set out to do in the first place, after the epic drama was delivered, who would even remember you ended up with a property after it was all said and done?

We all speak like Valley girls now
This article about it is amusing. And the thing is, being fluent in Valley speak myself, except for the added text speak I easily fall into the SoCal (VG2.0) dialect around my friends who always use it; vocal fry, upspeak & all. Regional and colloquial variations, as always, will be seen.

None of the numbers I've seen include the bit where Alec "put in" a couple hundred thousand of his own money, as well. So if 1.4M is the official number, should be accounting for at least 1.6M spent, right? And that's pretending he didn't have any cash or donor store money that we know came in...

Probably not.. Alec claimed he 'reimbursed' expenses and salary. Those would have come from donations to start with, so I wouldn't think they could count against the donations a second time.

However, there's Terry's claims he's been making on the Facebook CBS/Axanar group that he was up to 1.47 million documented just from records he had of donations into early 2016. That was not counting several categories he had yet to tabulate, such as whatever he could demonstrate about donor store or cash incomes. So you have that, and also whatever Axanar raised in the remainder of 2016.

Did anyone notice whether Terry made good on the remainder of his accounting, and so bumped up the donations total? I have been too busy to check. Terry was originally making noises that he had evidence of something closer to 2 million raised up into early 2016.

I suspect that whatever excess there might be over the 1.43 million 'official' donations number for KS/IGG is just slush money that isn't accounted for anywhere. I think it would be particularly useful to get it documented, if it is at all possible. It would demonstrate any *willful* concealment of funds 'that should have been used for the film', since the full court press of Axanar in court was that the KS/IGG income is for all practical purposes the budget.

I think Terry was posting some facts and figures on one of the Facebook groups a few weeks back. It certainly gave a clearer picture of non-Kickstarter/IGG money but didn't seem to come near to the 2 million he'd hinted.

For myself I definitely read speculation that Alec regarded the non-crowdfunding money as "his", so my suspicion since he started claims of paying money back into the production has always been that it was just from those funds. Of course he's obviously suplimenting it with auctioning off some of his collection, but at the end of the day he's the one that signed a three lease, spent 1.4+ million and has hardly any footage to show for it, so my sympathy is limited.

I still hope to get what I paid for some day. I'd still be interested to see Heroes and the 2x15 Axanar and hope they're not as awful as the recent trailer suggested. But with another year or so of rent to cover, I'm past holding my breath.

One interesting tidbit I read the other day (I think it was one of Alec's "Captain's Log" posts?) was that they intend to release the full Axanar feature script to the donors. I think this is pretty reasonable since it's likely the only way we'd get to see what we could've had (and paid for) and I'll applaud them for it if it happens. It'd be interesting to compare to the previously reviewed scripts.

I'd consider cash donors the same way as donors from KS/IGG. Illegal merchandise sales, well, that's CBS' money. But Alec has been trying to frame the cashflow as "from crowdfunding" and "other" since forever. "His"? As in "earned by his business"? :shifty: He really doesn't have any right to go there for donors and illegal merchandise, I think.

I'd agree it doesn't hurt anything to share a script with donors, donors should get something, but to me it overwhelmingly doesn't make up for taking most of the (wildly excessive amount of) donor money raised and investing it in an asset for his personal wealth making. To me that act 100x erases any merit to accrued by delivering fans a script, or even some set of 2x15 min films based on new money.

He really should be committing at the least to paying back the Axanar donor project for every cent put into the studio, minus perhaps the cost that renting a facility and equipment would have entailed, and a healthy interest on the loaned money (all the rest he put into the studio rent and buildout and operations). Note that this would NOT be offset by him paying out of his own pocket for the facility or its buildout or staff time for non-Trek uses (rent, etc.), since that would just be even more money (his own) he invested in *his* facility above and beyond the donor money he should pay back.

Then the Axanar project could make more films and everyone would be square, if burned.

He could make the commitment, then proceed, documenting how he achieves it by making a profit off the studio and any other businesses operated there, and putting *all* of that back into the donor pot until compel-borrowed money + proper interest is repaid.

It's a re-post by someone else. The takedown counter-notice is still under consideration.
