Denzel Washington is good in this movie because like with every other Denzel Washington movie, he engrosses himself so much in the role he is playing, you believe him in it. I also liked Ryan Reynolds, but everything around the pair seemed to fall apart.

Reynolds' transformation from this guy in the safe house to stone cold killer wasn't really believable. If he is pushing to become a field agent, how does he outwit and kill the experienced agents every time he engages them? Is he that lucky?

The movie has so many storylines and characters that you are left trying to sort it all out while going at this quick pace. If they had cut down on them and focused more on the mystery of is the CIA trying to kill me that Washington had placed in Reynolds' head and left the CIA aggressors as a more vague force after them, it would have been a superior movie.

Watched the stand up special featuring the last two guys standin' from the Blue Collar Comedy Tours. Can't help but notice that the more of these they make, the fewer there are on stage.

A few good jokes scattered throughout, but I really miss Bill Engvall & Ron White.

Saw Lights Out a few weeks ago. Pretty unique horror film concept. I recommend it, but don't watch the trailer. It gives up too much info.

First new to me movie of the month, I watched the Jack Black movie based off the R.L. Stine books, sort of.

Not too bad an idea, make the author a real person who created monsters, and the monsters escape the books, so that the movie isn't based off a particular novel in the series, but the series as a whole, sort of.

May go to the movies next week, see a couple in the theater...

Had a Netflix movie marathon the other night, after watchin' Goosebumps.

Holes was an alright movie, though it got a bit stupid there in the end.

Tom Segura's standup special wasn't too funny. A couple of good jokes, but overall, kinda stupid.

St. Vincent is now one of my new favorite Bill Murray movies. If ya haven't seen it yet, ya should.

Drinking Buddies pissed me right the hell off.

    1. Mr. Holmes – 2.25 of 5

A well-made film, but unnecessarily negative and depressing. I liked Ian McKellan and most of the rest of the cast (in particular Milo Parker and Hattie Morahan), but thought Laura Linney's character was robbed of needed sympathy by Linney's failure to conceal her own natural intelligence.

    2. The Man from Uncle – 3.5 of 5

Better and more fun than I expected. Still, the movie was often awkward, occasionally stupid, and even boring at stretches. The lunch-basket fight was a highlight, the off-road chase a blight. I wouldn't mind seeing U.N.C.L.E. – or a sequel – again.

    3. The Abominable Bride (Sherlock) – 2 of 5

I've own all three previous seasons on iTunes (though only the third season really holds up), but I hated this episode through and through. The resolution to the mystery of the Abominable Bride was, to be frank, stupid, heavy-handed, and largely ignorant of both Victoriana and the Doyle's Holmes stories (not especially surprising, considering how badly the writers missed the point of the character of Irene Adler – which I discovered for myself rather unpleasantly when I read A Scandal in Bohemia for the first time a few weeks after seeing Bride). The modern-day portion of the story was even worse.

Neither the joy of seeing the fantastic modern cast in Victorian England, nor the surprisingly enjoyable fate of Moriarty at the falls were able to make up for the poor quality of the writing.

    4. The Force Awakens (Star Wars) 2 of 5

The Good: All of the young heroes were tremendously likable (Rey, Finn, Poe), and I'm looking forward to seeing them again. Michael Kaplan's costume designs were deceptively excellent – it's hard to notice at first just how good many of them are, when they seem so derivative at a glance. I liked Han Solo for the first time (I love Indiana Jones, but am not usually a fan of cynical or roguish characters). Some of the visuals are wonderful – such as the TIE fighters flying out of the sunset. And John Williams's score is his finest since the prequels (and has his best themes since at least Attack of the Clones, if not The Phantom Menace).

The Bad: The movie doesn't tell a self-contained or cohesive story. Rey's motivation changes with little or no explanation in the middle of the film, she's overpowered with no real notice or explanation (there are rumors that the former might be in the offing in Episode VIII or IX, but The Force Awakens doesn't seem care about her prowess except as a convenience). The interstellar geography makes no sense. Captain Phasma was worse than useless (I'd have been fine with the character's thinness if her shield-lowering scene had been handled differently). Even the Starkiller Base seems to exist just for another Death Star attack, rather than for thematic or narrative reasons (does anything in the movie – except for the school-shooter-esque villain – resonate with the macguffin?).

The Worst: My family and I found this movie horribly depressing. Every victory achieved in Return of the Jedi (arguably, in the entire original trilogy) was undone. Han and Leia failed as a couple (and Han's death was Leia's fault). Luke failed to restore the Jedi. The Rebellion failed to bring an end to the Empire. A third Death Star destroyed planets.

I'm baffled as to why fans of the classic movies liked The Force Awakens. Maybe I'm not enough of a Star Wars fan?

    5. Ant Man – 3.25 of 5

Mostly enjoyable, largely forgettable. I think the film's episode of How It Should Have Ended and Tony Zhou's most recent Every Frame a Painting (the most relevant part starts at 3:23, but the rest of the video is helpful to Zhou's point) underline most of Ant Man's problems, but the cast is relentlessly likable and the set pieces are consistently charming. I look forward to Ant Man and the Wasp.

    6. Civil War (Captain America) – 2.5 of 5

I felt this was much less than the sum of its parts. How It Should Have Ended really says most of what should be said about the movie's logic, and a few of its other problems. I think Spider-Man also would have benefitted from being in his own film before he appeared in Avengers 2.5.

    7. Zootopia - 3.75 of 5

Easily the best movie I've seen that's come out this year, but I didn't love it so much as everyone else seems to have. I have no idea why. It was quite nice, though.

    8. Home - 3.5 of 5

A very pleasant little movie. I enjoyed Rihanna and Jim Parsons (though I don't think I stopped thinking of him as Sheldon-as-an-alien until about halfway through the movie), the soundtrack (which took me by surprise; I haven't enjoyed an animated soundtrack so much since Shrek), and the sweet (if obvious) ending.

    9. The Big Short 3.25 of 5

A good – or at least well-made – movie, but not a very good story. My family thought it was informative, but I've paid a lot of attention to the crisis and its aftermath, so I didn't benefit so much from that. For whatever reason, this was the first time I've liked Christian Bale in a role since Equilibrium.

    10. Beyond (Star Trek) 3.25 of 5

Have I ever grinned so much in a movie? I'm certain I've never seem one that believed so strongly in the power of love, togetherness, and sheer joy. That said, I don't think Beyond was a very good movie, or good Star Trek. I hope future installments in the series will be more like Star Trek (2009).

    11. Spotlight (4.25 of 5)

I actually saw Spotlight twice: first on my own, then with family. It held up to re-watching (though it was still less than riveting), and was actually even more impressive the second time. Though Spotlight will never be a classic, it is a very well-made film. I agree with the Academy – this was the best movie released last year (though I wish Leiv Schriber's performance had received more recognition).

    12. The Emperor's New Groove 2.75 of 5

The villains were fabulous. I wish the rest of the movie had lived up to them. Why do they even have that lever?

    13. Lilo & Stitch 4 of 5

This movie is wonderful. It's homey, comfortable, and loving – and, despite its cliches, feels like it belongs to itself. I actually enjoyed listening to Elvis in this movie, and I don't like Elvis's music at all (except In the Ghetto). Movies felt less self-conscious and constrained when Lilo & Stitch was made. Maybe we'll see tranquility and prosperity again someday, and that will return.

Can't rent movies at the gas station. Mom & pop video rental & tanning booth shops have gone under. Blockbuster, Movie Gallery, Hollywood Video & that one Movies & More are shut down. And Hasting's Books Music and Video has declared bankruptcy.

So, now I turn to the red boxes for my movie rentals.

First up, the sequel to the magician movie I didn't care much for to begin with, but I knew my sister wanted to watch it. She missed it in theaters, so I got the rental the other night. Some good parts to it, but while I still don't have a high opinion of the first movie, I liked this one even less.

And, seriously, why didn't they call it "And Now You Don't"? How awesome would that have been?

The latest-ish from Tom Hanks, AHftK was more than a little disappointing, considering it has Tom Hanks in the lead role, surrounded by folks you've never heard of in a story about a salesman having a medical & midlife crisis while trying to sell holoconference technology to the king of Saudi Arabia, a job he only got because thirty years prior, he made a stupid joke to the then-prince in a men's room. Seriously, what the hell?!?

Followed that with the latest in the "Divergent" series...I don't know why, other than because I watched the first two. And this one has Jeff Daniels. But it also has Miles Teller and I'm about tired of that asshole being in every damn thing.

Redbox sent me a promo code when I started using it the other night. A friend of mine who used redbox once sent me her promo code. So, I used those codes to rent a couple more movies this weekend.

The latest Barbershop was alright, a bit more serious than the previous films with a focus on gangs & gun violence. Still, a good message, and some good jokes.

GR was all kinds of messed up, right up there with American History X for subject matter. Patrick Stewart was freaking intense as the skinhead leader, too.

    The Martian (Rewatch) - 8/10
So going for a bit of a glut/catch up this week after a month of heavy work. So managed to get the following under the belt today

Pete's Dragon - clearly in the minority here, I thought this was a lovely, well told, unmawkish "boy and his dog" film filled with lovely performances (especially the children) and really only marred by the standard "Evil Hunter Badman" character played by Urban - not that he was bad, but rather it's far too well worn a trope. Hit my sentimental sweet spot. 6/10

    War Dogs
    - far better than I expected it to be. I've not enjoyed much of Todd Phillip's work in the past (I loathe The Hangover Trilogy specifically) and neither Jonah Hill (outside of Moneyball) or Miles Teller have done much for me. But this was more restrained than I thought it was going to be and Teller gave a pretty decent "good man playing at bad". Any "message" is ejected just to keep the story moving along and hence it significantly suffers when compared against the likes of Lord of War. But it's an entertaining jaunt and a diverting 2 hours. 6/10

    The Martian
(Re-watch) - Mrs Rune has been feeling wretched recently so I found a cheap copy of this in an exchange store to help cheer her up. And I understand why it was one of her favourite films of last year. It's a great concept, expertly put together, plenty of drama, but heaps of humour to broaden it out. It is by far and away Scott's most complete film since Kingdom of Heaven (DC of course) and I would happily put it in his top five films. It may have a sense of good-hearted inevitability about it, there is no doubt that Watney will make it home, but the film is so expertly crafted and acted, you can forgive this and, in fact, embrace it. The Blu-Ray will sit on the shelf ready for any day when I need to put a smile on my face (or Mrs Runes) or lift us up. 8/10

So did a cinema double bill last night, solo. Thanks Mrs Rune :bolian:

Sausage Party last night. Great premise, well animated, terribly executed. Two big laughs (one of which including an iconic rockstar-as-food), a lot of fucks and some rather bland discussion about God and religion. About 1/2 through I suddenly realised - man, I wish Trey Parker and Matt Stone had made this instead. Poor. 3.5/10

Don't Breathe - I never saw the remake of Evil Dead. Felt redundant given Evil Dead 2 was the proper remake of the original. Still DB was the directors' next film and came with good reviews. Very simple set up - kids try to burgle a blind man... all goes wrong very quickly. What sets it apart is, even with its thin script, all of the pieces of the puzzle are well thought out and with a section of the film that must run for 40-odd minutes with nothing more than the occasional expletive and calling out of names for dialogue, the tension is sky high. Certainly one of the best modern "boogie-men" "trapped in a house" films (not quite up to the level of The Babadook) and Stephen Lang burns it all down with a damned creepy performance. Very decent. 6/10

    Hell or High Water
    next hopefully

This has been on my to watch list for a long time.

It gets a high grade from me because it resisted being an overglamorized "Ra Ra America!" and used the steady cam perfectly. It allows the camera to linger over some moments , allowing you to want to reach out and grab these people saying "don't get on that plane" or "don't open that door" or "stop that plane whatever the cost!" It also stitches together a narrative of what could have gone on on the plane that is believeable and again, not something Hollywood-esque.

Needed a laugh the other day, and found Cedric the Entertainer's Netflix special was newly added to the streaming service. Only about an hour long, it was pretty funny.

Went by the redbox after work this morning, and rented a few movies, Captain America: Civil War for my sister to watch and two for me.

The TMNT sequel, while still not very good, was certainly better than the last one. Could have used more Stephen Amell (he's awesome on Arrow, ya know) and I liked Beebop & Rocksteady, as stupid as they were...

The live action TJB was pretty good, too. Still bummed I missed it in the theater.

Last week, while I was in North Carolina, one of my stops was the Carolinas Aviation Museum. The plane from Flight 1549, aka "The Miracle on the Hudson", is the centerpiece of the hanger museum, and was very impressive to see in person, along with all the other plans on display.

This afternoon, I went over to Nacogdoches for the bargain matinee of Sully, which is based on the investigation into the events of the forced water landing in the Hudson River. Starring Tom Hanks and directed by Clint Eaistwood, with a supporting cast full of familiar faces. Its an interesting story no matter how ya look at it, and its well told in the movie. Not the best from Tom Hanks, and not the best Clint Eastwood has directed, but it is still well worth watching. If nothing else, it will make ya pay attention to the safety briefing the next time ya take a flight anywhere.

By the way, one of my favorite things at the museum...in the display case that included luggage, cellphones, newspapers, pilot uniforms, and even the beverage service cart from the flight, there was also a taxidermied goose, of the kind that flew into the engines of the plane, taking 'em out.

If you're in Charlotte, the museum is worth the visit, out there near the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

OK just bought some films on a whim. One of them was a low budget film done this year called Kill Command. They had a budget of around a million dollars but what they did with that amount of money is amazing. The effects alone seem rather effective. The story isn't that deep but it had me interested from start to finish.

    6/10

This was also a first time effort from the films director Steven Gomez
