According to AICN, Bryan Fuller said in a radio interview he'd prefer it if he could just do 10 episodes for Star Trek: Discovery from season 2 onwards. That's unexpected as I personally expected at least 13 episodes for each future season or even more with season one being a testing the waters season and seeing how well it did before committing to more episodes. Are 10 episodes enough or do we want longer seasons?
Ten episodes increases the chances each one will be of higher technical quality (more $$$ per episode) and avoids "filler episodes". I vote 10.
If he only wants to do 10, that's fine, as it's his show. The other three episodes can be clip shows.
Think of it this way--the inevitable season set release will be less expensive than a 22-26 episode season set. It'll make collecting the series more affordable.
No less than 13, but 26 is too much. I'd rather have two Star Trek series on at the same time. Discovery with 13 episodes and a post-Nemesis show with 13 episodes. Would make 26 Star Trek episodes a year, just like it used to be.
Yes. If it's what Fuller prefers, I would go for 10, but I'd also be happy with 13 if that's what CBS want. Certainly no more than 13 as that's when the quality starts getting diluted, and we end up with filler episodes.
I'd prefer more rather than fewer. Sure, there'll be some clunkers in a long season, but there will also likely be some in a short season. If the setting and characters are interesting enough, I'd hope there'd be many stories to tell. Then again, these episodes can be longer than the standard 40-ish minutes, so perhaps they will just fit more into the episodes.
I agree with you in the "filler episodes". Nevertheless, I don't think 10 per season are enough since Star Trek isn't only about special effects, but about characters and their development. I prefer 13 (to 15) episodes to keep focusing on the characters without having to produce one-hour-or-more-episodes. I liked the 45/50 minutes of Voyager and co.
I'm happy with 13,but wouldn't be too upset with just 10. Shows like Dexter, Game of Thrones, etc have done amazing things with that length of season. And if I remember correctly (unable to take time to find the link to the report), it has been stated that the episodes will run around the 45 minute mark.
I'm pretty sure Voyager episodes were only around 42 minutes which has been the standard since Trek returned to TV with TNG.
I was already bummed with 13 so 10 is just too few for me. Yeah some filler episodes suck but some are the best we've ever had.
