About the same way we look at Roddenberry's The God Thing proposal for the first Star Trek movie, or the JFK assassination idea he proposed for movies II, III, and IV. It will provide a fascinating glimpse at the path not taken, and possibly put the insanity of the writers on full display, but it wont be canonical in any way.

The difference here is that Roddenberry was not in control of the franchise for the most part; ISB retired as the series' showrunner in 1999. GR had to be leashed by studio execs; ISB had, within the confines of budget, carte blanche. And for the most part, GR gave a thumbs up or down to new stories after TMP (which may have been ignored). ISB worked with the writers, but the direction of the show , its narrative, was always in his hands. Looking to ISB as to what happened after WYLB is more akin to consulting Tolkien's notebooks to know more about the Lord of the Rings universe.

Which I'm sure are not considered canonical either, are they?

Kind of a weird discussion anyway. How does canon all of a sudden factor into any of that? They have merely announced a fun little thing they did for a documentary, nothing more. It's just about providing (A) a glimpse into how the show was written, (B) how they think about the show and its characters now and (C) how a hypothetical 8th seasons might have looked. Just a fun little exercise, nothing more and nothing less. And certainly not anything that has anything to do with “canon”. ;)

Fun, yes. However, there are a number of posters (me not included) here who assert that the novelverse exerts an influence over canon, be it adding insights into what happened in episodes and movies or outrightly establishing the course taken by the characters after the series ended. It is to that debate that my question was directed.

Also a weird discussion, because everything shown on screen is canon, even contradictory stuff. Nothing from the novels, comics, video games, cereal boxes or ex-writer roundtable discussions is canon. It's pretty straightforward, really.

Squeee!!!! So very exciting!!! Since we're clearly not getting DS9 on Blu-Ray (at least any time in the foreseeable future), it's nice that the series is getting some love. TNG and TOS have been re-released (again) on DVD, yet they can't put DS9 and VOY back together for the 50th in one DVD boxed set? Ira Steven Behr was amazingly candid in his TNG Blu-Ray interviews, I can't wait for this!!!

I found out this weekend that Brooks is not in the best of health. I was shocked to hear that, but he won't be in the documentary because of it.

Well, that certainly puts things into a different light. Let's just hope he'll be well soon. :(

Cirroc Loften said he was doing OK, but it was said with a little concern. I'm only speculating based on what I heard, but I do hope he is better soon.

Wasn't this announced a couple of years ago? I remember Armin & Chase tweeting that they'd been interviewed together for it...

How will be coming out? What kind of market is there realistically for a standalone DS9 doc?

Genuinely sad to hear of Brooks' health and absence from doco, which I look forward to. Been rewatching DS9 recently, and though VOY will always be nostalgic first Trek love, I'm impressed more and more every time I rewatch it just how good (bar a few episodes ;)) and innovative DS9 is, especially in later arc narratives which still hold up. And Sisko has the best arc of all the characters ( apart from Kira), as well as the great episode directing work Brooks did and performances in likes of Pale Moonlight. He's since become one of my fave Trek actors and probably favourite captain. So I'll be sad not to hear him discuss his time on DS9, though as others have hinted he may said everything he feels he has to already.

I've heard similar whispers about Avery Brooks' health over the last year or so...no actually idea what is wrong - and it's none of our business. He seems to have become fairly reclusive and no longer makes convention appearances nor does he seem to be teaching at Rutgers anymore.
