Slightly unappealing is something of an understatement.

From a design point of view in terms of its aesthetics what really concerns me is the lack of good angles from which to shoot it. Theres really only one good angle, aft and to the por or starb'd slightly. Geometrically putting a triangle and a circle together doesnt look great. I like its chunkiness, I like the new style "thrusters" and Impulse assembly. I appreciate the CGI was crap cos the guys had 5 days to do it in but I really do think its an ugly design. No wonder they said no to it back in the 70s and instead we got the beautiful connie refit.

I don't understand how people are conflicted by this. Wording aside, it's a simple like/dislike choice.

I chose option 3: Hideous monstrosity. Seriously, it's like the designer is deliberately trying to offend my eyes. What is the point of that big triangle?

If they added a square to the triangle and the circle, I guess it could be used as a remedial learning tool....

Or add an X as well so it can function as a playstation controller. ;)

The ship is OK for me, but what I like most about the Discovery's design is the butthurt it caused and the number of people who went batshit crazy about it :techman:

I think it's the ugliest Starfleet ship concept I've seen make it to the actual screen in Star Trek and I include the Dauntless, Norway class and the Vengeance in that. And for a hero ship, too. I'm hoping it's got a lot of refinement to do, but if that's the case I question the decision to release this at all. Why not just do some more whooshing between planets and reveal the title?

Having said that, I would reiterate that this will have no impact on my intention to watch the show, or my hope that I will enjoy it.

I'm really concerned by this "design" IMO it looks like a terrible kitbash that was thrown together by someone with not real idea of federation design. To have this ship as a show runner is terrible and if the quality of this design is anything to go by then I really can't see how the series can be any good sadly :(

Well, while the design may be flawed for some of us, that doesn't mean the series will do poorly. Honestly, for myself, it's all about the story and the characters. You deliver both of those in high quality and I won't care if the ship looks like a cardboard box you found in an IKEA dumpster.

I agree with you, what I mean is if they believe that this ship is a good design it doesn't bode well for the design of the entire series. It looks like no real thought has gone into it. For people saying at least it's not a Daedalus class if they'd presented this design shown here I would have been 100 times happier.

This is one of those situations where it comes down to design aesthetic and personal choice. Someone on the team must have thought the ship looked great. Then again, it may not look like that come broadcast time, we don't know. The stories, and characters, though, are unaffected by this. I've seen plenty of films with bad effects that have great stories. This could still be a major win.

    It's growing on me.

It looks better from some angles than others, but I'm sure the final design will be just fine.

It looks great from the front - but funny from underneath.

So maybe they could either shorten the nacelles (like I've done above)....

....or raise them on struts at the end of the triangle.

From the lower angle it's like a reverse Galaxy-Class, which I always thought was too saucer-heavy. Though this way, with the larger drive section, doesn't looks quite as weird to me. The more I see it, the more it appeals to me (though I did once consider the rejected PotT design for a fanfic, so was already a fan of the layout).

I'm glad we've seen her early, because it will take some time to grow on me. I'm liking a fair few of the angles, but not so much looking up from below.

Yeah the front angle looks very very nice - just below (and presumably above), look goofy.

I love that angle - looks very interesting.

Ha, this just goes to show how personal taste can differ: This is the angle I dislike the most! It looks like a weird, distorted capsized “H”.

No, it's not. It's a love/mildly dislike choice. Imagine you just saw a movie and you're being asked to rate it on a 1-5 star scale. However, the catch is you can only choose 2 stars or 5 stars. That's this poll.

I didn't vote either, there's no "Sort of/Not really but I'll learn to like it" option. :)

Yes. And it's a good point because that might very well be what they are going for. Intentionally, for story purposes - just some junk ship put together by a band of mercenaries who are not entirely sympathetic. Very different from what we've seen in all the series so far. And different is what they have said the show will be.

But then again, the thought in this quote from another discussion brought me instant relief:
    :)

LOL. Very well and creatively said.

    It's a bit IDIC-like, don't you think?

    We need more options:

7: I think that it is sexy!

    6: It’s alright.

    5: It’s growing on me.

4: I have no strong feelings about this either way.

3: I want to like it, but I need more time to get used to it.

    2: I dislike this.

1: I hope that it gets blown up!

This guy certainly hopes that it will get blown up:

Lots of ships look great from the front - but funny from underneath.

The same is also true of most people. :alienblush:
