Anyone watching this series. I've been hearing great things about it through facebook so I decided to start it tonight. It's pretty good so far. It's about a kid who witnesses something terrifying and goes missing and the basis of the series so far is the mystery of where this kid went. I've only seen the first two episodes so far, and I love the 80s nostalgia feel so far. As someone who was born in 1984, this is a throwback and the way it's done is very old school.

I'm on ep 5 right now and lovin' it. It's kind of like a bunch of '80s movies smooshed together, but done pleasingly. So far I've yet to have that, "What a rip-off!" moment. Just a pleasant feeling of vague nostalgia. And mystery.

And just like Super 8, they've gotten a small group of great kids together. I've not seen any of them before (that I know of), but they're all vivid and real.

Just started it, I'm enjoying it a lot, strange mix of horror clichés with ET and medical experiment conspiracies thrown in too.

I was greatly reminded about Super 8 watching this movie. Love the kids so far, and Eleven is already an interesting character even though she doesn't talk much.

I've only watched one episode so far, but yeah, I'm liking it as well. Nails the 80's atmosphere, in look and feel. Theme song also reminds me of Halt & Catch Fire's.

Just getting started with this and I like it so far!

I think it is brilliant to set the series in the 80's- no smart phones, no internet, if you wanted to find out something you had to go the library or talk with someone.

Best description I have is that it is like a mix of E.T and Steven King

The actress who plays Eleven is fantastic for her age, compare her to the Harry Potter cast at the same age...

Well, I would label this as a show that is like a novel you can't put down. I just finished it, and it was really good. Loved that eerie atmosphere, the look of the Monster reminded me a lot of many Monster of the Week X Files episodes, and the music was some of the best music to a TV show I've heard this year. I would highly recommend it. Also, there really isn't a lot of swearing or violence, so I would recommend kids maybe 12 and up to see this too and have a good time.

I was a little confused about the government aspect of the show though. I don't want to spoil it so I will just ask where was the motive behind what they were doing.

Completely agree. I think of it as if Spielberg adapted a Stephen King book...although this is much better than how that actually might have turned out.

They really do get the atmosphere and storytelling style right. Set design, music, titles, kid actors that look like real awkward kids, even how the monster is always just out of frame and nothing is actually too graphic. The horror is (almost) always just off screen. In the actual 80s it was because of budget reasons as much as anything else. This time, they do it because that's how you tell a story like this one. Even the incomprehensible government conspiracy is just the right amount of vague for my tastes.

Also, it has a great sense of humour and fun.

My understanding was that they were trying to develop Eleven's mental powers as a weapon or spy, hence the scene where she listens to the Russian guy in uniform and beams what he's saying back to the base. In doing so, she accidentally ends up opening the gateway. Maybe I got that wrong though!

I like how Eleven got annoyed by the noisy fan in the diner and made it stop running. If you can do that to a machine, just imagine the other possibilities...

I really enjoyed the series. It was Fire in the Sky meets Super 8 meets It Follows. I think the acting was particularly great and I hope there's a second season with the same cast.

There were great Super 8 Vibes to this show. This show might have had better kids though.

I got vibes from The Goonies, ET, Super Eight with a little bit of Stand By Me thrown in. Pretty good stuff.

Just finished the first season. Great show, kinda Goonies meets Steven King meets Donnie Darko. They get just about everything pitch perfect.

    As I understand it...
They started out trying to locate and eavesdrop on Soviet leaders, but when they thought they'd accidentally found an alien or something in the process the objective shifted to trying to locate it, make contact and exploit it.

What a fantastic show. I'd never even heard of it until friends of mine started talking about it a couple days ago. Great atmosphere from start to finish, and wonderful acting as well, especially from all of the child actors. It's like Steven Spielberg and Stephen King made a TV show together. I hope this gets a second season.

Not to be "that guy" though, but shouldn't this thread be in Science Fiction & Fantasy?

Maybe, but I never post in TV & Media and I was here browsing at the time. If the mods want to move it, go ahead. :)
