there is no question I can see where you are coming from with this, but I dont agree, accepting a recast in a fan film vs officially is not the same thing.

I cant speak for anyone but me, but you can over look something dodgy from a fan film, because its made by fans, with love, its obviously meant as a love letter to the series.

The new movies on the other hand, are not a love letter to the series, they maybe good movies but they are not that, I think a big part of the reason why fans can accept Chris Pine as Kirk, is that the movie is set in another timeline, and the rest of the production is also different. Heck they even altered his childhood by killing off his Dad, meaning Kirk in these movies, was never going to be the same as Kirk in the TV series.

If we were talking about a new TV series with a new cast which could be considered a S4 of TOS, then yes I would agree.

edit: Just to be clear the term "love letter" was my choice, I had not see the Trekzone video before writing this post.

that video makes me think, [random musing alert] the internet is massive now, and it has its own celebrities, and its own "media", its own "bubble" something that alot of young people are growing up with and rejecting old fashioned media for.

Star Trek fan films may not be profit for CBS / Paramount, but it gives them a presence online, it gives Star Trek, a presence in that place that it normally wouldnt have, it gives the internet generation a Star Trek of their own.

Now of course we have Netflix, producing content for the internet that people are lapping up, and coming up a Star Trek web series, these web series have opened the door for the series to have a place for it officially on the internet.

He's best known as Ed Elric. And Travis Willingham, who plays Roy Mustang, also has a role as King Roland the Second on Sofia the First.

having now seen him speak on Axanr, its a crying shame this guy is not the public face of the Star Trek fan films, speaks very well, speaks with a passion, his history with Star Trek is great, how he funds the series is great.

He may not be able to go on a Late Night show, but he could discuss things on the likes of Collider or Screen Junkies

    You beat me to it!

It's always hard to re-shoot one half of a funny conversation, but due to real-world issues I had no choice.

Ah hell after watching that makes me feel worse that we won't get to see any more of Vic in action. The guy is a real gentleman...

    No doubt.

But I wager he sorts it out and continues becomes an anthology series...different actors showing different parts of the fleet...done correctly it could work under the new rules.

RMB is a host at Collider. He has all his friends there sipping the Kool-aid. Vic would never get on.

I guess there is scope for it, but it would be really hard to do, if you need to introduce new characters, and new storylines, and then resolve them in 30 minutes, that is not something you always going to be able to do well. It has to be an anthology in the truest meaning of the world, if cant be an anthology or Kirk stories, as CBS will claim that this is an arc, and as such not allowed.

Also he has lost both cast and crew from the production, which wont help.

Dont get me wrong there are things on this side, the style of ship, and uniforms, help put an episode in a certain place in the Star Trek timeline, without the need for a great deal with screen-time or writing to do it. I would think its still going to be really hard to do it all in 2 x 15 minute episodes, and there will be times when it just doesnt work.

That's not true. Since the big change in the 1970s (1978?) copyright vests once the work is fixed in a tangible medium. No registration is required for your work to be copyrighted.

From the US Copyright Office's own website:

Do I have to register with your office to be protected?
No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work

Why should I register my work if copyright protection is automatic?
Registration is recommended for a number of reasons. Many choose to register their works because they wish to have the facts of their copyright on the public record and have a certificate of registration. Registered works may be eligible for statutory damages and attorney's fees in successful litigation. Finally, if registration occurs within five years of publication, it is considered prima facie evidence in a court of law.

Sadly, we are forced to come back to the Harsh Reality of the Fan Film forever being Poisoned by the High Lord Infringer and his Actions. Future Fan Creators will be ever stifled and given pause in their creativity and production, concerned with violations and injunctions. Who knows what could have FanBeen, with the soon-to-be limitations and consequences related to making Fan Films of this Thing we love so much.

(With abject apologies to Nobel Prize laureate Malala)

"One (man), one (Act), one (trailer), one (lawsuit) can change the (Fan Film) world..."

no official word on their plans, but the new rules dont leave much room for a production like Star Trek Continues, if any. People I think are just assuming he will shut down.

I think its a fair assumption, but I would like to wait until he announces his plans
