That's my problem with the show too. Each season got worse and worse as they just kept coming back with worse and worse villains and plot lines. How they treated Weir and Sam and then random Asgard. I like how it ended though.

But having so many ships being built so quickly, and quietly in seasons 8-10 of SG was insane.

If I were to rank them I'd say:
1st: D - I loved Universe and its such a shame it was left hanging the way it was. The series had potential and broke the typical Stargate format--which I think is probably the reason it wasn't as well received, but that was what made me love it all the more.

2nd: C - Again it was left hanging with lots of potential, either in our galaxy or needing to return to Pegasus and deal with the Wraith. Maybe they could finally give us the Sheppard/Teyla romance that was meant to be.

3rd: B - Especially if Ben Browder was up for returning, he is great and definitely deserved a spin-off of his own. Maybe shake things up a little and have the SG-1 team now based on the George Hammond, making Colonel Carter the one in charge of its operations.

4th: A - A movie either set in the TV canon or rebooting the franchise entirely.

 

I'd go with finishing of SG:U even if it was a TV film or mini-series.

 

Having watched them all recently - SG:A for first time - that's the only option I'd go for. SG:U had some good things, and might have improved, but just lacked fun and wit.

 

E. It's been too long to realistically continue either Atlantis or Universe beyond reunion telefilms (and SG-1 had quite a long enough run itself; although telefilms there are also fine.)

So a new Stargate would seem to be the obvious choice, but I'd prefer a TV series because I think the premise of Stargate - while original to a film - worked a lot better with an episodic TV structure. Whether or not the new series was in continuity with the last three, it definitely wouldn't be one that would assume audience familiarity with them. Probably something close to SG-1 if not a direct reboot of SG-1.

 

Of the 3 existing TV series, the one that I would most want to see come back is Atlantis. I never get tired of watching Dr. McKay act arrogant & cowardly & sniping at everyone all the time. I always wanted to see how the hell a relationship between him & Dr. Keller could work in the long term.

While SGU improved in Season 2, it was far too little too late. It still wasn't really any fun. The only characters I really liked watching were Dr. Rush (as sort of a non-funny version of Dr. McKay) and Eli & Chloe (because I could really relate to their relationship where he'd been totally friendzoned).

He is just very intelligent ( like me) and everybody else is jealous.

 

I don't see any way to salvage the SG-1/Atlantis/Universe continuity. By the end, space ships made the titular Stargate virtually non existent. Convoluted "second evolution" nonsense turned the storyline into jibberish. Space magic even more outlandish than Star Wars or Lord of the Rings did away with even the pretense that it was sci-fi.

I think a reboot is the only way forward. TV is a better fit than movies, though.

Anything but no SG Universe please. This "bad mood" tv was done so badly that a remark in another show about how they got home or found God or whatever is just fine.

But we are quite safe from a SGU continuitation anyway.

Ideally I would like to see SG1 with a new cast but the old cast dropping in regularily.

It's illogical to go back to pick up where they left off. Reboot, reboot, reboot, and lets just hope they avoid too much melodrama.

 

Sure SG:U was a depature from the previous two SG shows, but would we really have wanted a third show in the same vein as the other two? Look at what happened to ST by the time VOY and certainly ENT came along some where becoming bored with them as they were basically the same premise, only one show really deveated from the premise DSN and I remember reading all the complaints about it, not set on a ship etc.. No whether you like the show or not is besides the point it tried to do something different did it work or not is subjective to the individual viewer. Perhaps SG:U's biggest issue was not so much it diverged from the previous two SG shows but to the degree it diverged.

Or perhaps i was down to some lacklustre episodes early on (but many shows have this), perhaps it was down to the characters not being likeable or the writers not finding the characters voices initally. But most of the time Robert Carlyle stole every scene he was in.

 

Yes, I would have preferred a SG1 copy over a cheap BSG copy. There is always the option to make a "creative break/pause" if there are no idea what to do next.

It's the same with VOY and ETP as you mention. A creative pause would have worked out better than simply continue to produce and recycle old scripts.

If they were going to resurrect Stargate without rebooting it I'd want them to take it forward, not live in the past.

Don't just take a bunch of people and strand them away from Earth again. The series should start with the president announcing to the whole world everything that has happened. Earth has defeated its most dangerous enemies, acquired super-weapons, and now mankind is beginning to migrate off Earth and establish itself as a power. For the first time in the show's universe, humanity is proactive, not reactive. They make shaky alliances with alien cultures of comparable power but incompatible culture. Some politicians on Earth want to be allies and others want to dictate terms for the rest of the universe. New World parables ensue.

 

To be fair, the titular Stargate was already becoming non-existent even before Earth started building starships. By the end of the fifth season (which BTW was before RDA stopped caring, though not by much) we had already seen an increase in Earth centric episodes or episodes where SG-1 hitched a ride in a Tok'ra cargo ship.

I will agree in the later years it got way out of hand. Hell, when Ben Browder joined the show we see him posing by the gate and see him off-world in his first episode, but don't actually see him walk through the gate on screen until the fifth or sixth episode.

Although I was one of the more vocal "go back to SG-1/SGA style show" back when SGU aired, looking back I agree it was a good idea to try to be different, they just didn't pull it off very good. Granted, this might have been the result of teething problems, and certainly by the end of the second season they seemed to be getting a better handle on the show and were noticing which characters were the good ones and giving them more focus.

Still, the first season left much to be desired, and half the time seemed like it was being written by someone who thought less action and more character stuff automatically equalled top quality.

 

My idea of going back to an SG1/SGA style show wouldn't require the Stargate so much as it would require a unified main cast who like each other and go on adventures.

But as I mentioned in the earlier post, I'd rather the premise be a continuation of what they accomplished in SG1 and SGA, not a reset. I want it to be about what happens next. And I think they could still include the Stargate as a means of travel, it's faster and cheaper.

 

While I was rewatching The Ark Of Truth I was thiniking they could continue the adventures of SG1 in dVD form and do a TNG styled reboot as a new TV series. A series set alittle in the future dealing with the events of Stargate Universe and moving forward in the Stargate universe.

 

I would be okay with a new show based in the Stargate SG-1/Atlantis/Universe universe. I think it's a bit too late now to go back and revive SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe, however I would be cool with seeing telefilms or straight-to-DVD films catching up with the old casts. That being said, a new show with new characters could also interact with characters from all three shows.

I'm not opposed to a Stargate film from Emmerich, though I hope they just don't rehash the original film. SG-1, etc. showed the potential in the concept. There's so much they can do it. But seeing an older, wiser, grizzled Kurt Russell back, and maybe James Spader too, would be neat to see.

 

In a television landscape in which we get late continuations of X Files, Gilmore Girls and Full House, I wouldn't say it's unrealistic.

I'd like to see a combined continuation of SG1, Atlantis and Universe. Atlantis is on Earth now anyways.

A video game would probably be a good platform for a continuation. You don't have to bother that much with health problems if you get RDA for voice acting and maybe some performance capture. The whole SG Team idea is perfect for a multiplayer/coop game. You could add new stories continuously with DLCs, and could basically tell interactive TV episodes. 24 new missions for each "season" DLC.
