A female Doctor, your candidates please!

Olivia Coleman for me. That woman's range is enormous.

Yeah from ditzy characters in sitcoms/sketch shows to battered wives in kitchen sink dramas. I'm not sure there's anything she can't do and whether she ends up being the Doctor or not it'd amaze me if she wasn't on some kind of BBC shortlist.

Three things:

1. I'd love it if this happened, and I like a lot of the candidates already mentioned.

2. I think Katherine Parkinson would be my favorite out of those mentioned, but if it's her, I hope it isn't soon, or if it is that it doesn't preclude more seasons of "Humans".

3. This almost certainly isn't happening any time soon. Doctor Who's popularity in countries that would not accept a female Doctor being the main reason I believe that. I'd like to be wrong, and I'd also like for it to be the reason some of those countries get their minds opened just a wee bit - but I doubt it.

Which people in which countries are you thinking of?
(Because, let's be honest--most people in most countries don't give a shit about Doctor Who)

It doesn't have to be most of the people - just the people involved in whatever government censor board they have.

And admittedly 75 isn't *most* countries, but it is quite a lot: http://www.doctorwho.tv/whats-new/a...mulcast-in-over-75-countries-and-cinemas#list

And as for which countries specifically, I don't know, but I DO know that the reason I'm giving has been cited by people involved with the production and/or the BBC before. (The impression I got was that it had to do mostly with people of the Islamic faiths, but I'm not positive.)

yeah, I'm gonna have to see a link before I believe that is currently a reason to NOT have a female Doctor. That someone from the BBC or production said because a few countries in the world wouldn't accept it for censorship reasons... Yeah, that smells like bullshit. As in, not true.

Of all of the names suggested, Ruth Wilson is by far my favorite choice. I love the intensity she brings to her characters and she can do quirky and witty just right.

That being, Tatiana Maslany would be very ideal as well, but only after Orphan Black has naturally run its course.

I also concur that it's a pity Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, Diana Rigg and Judi Dench aren't a bit younger. They would phenomenal Doctors. Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett and particularly Joanna Lumley would be quite nice as well.

If I were writing the series finale for Downton Abbey, it would end with Edith getting her happy-ever-after with the husband of her choice. And then the final scene would be Violet and Isabel walking together outside on the lawn, they hear an odd noise, the TARDIS materializes, and the Doctor marches up to Isabel and says, "Okay, holiday's over, time to get back to work."

Violet stares at them. "I'm not sure I understand."

Isabel turns to her and extends her hand: "Harriet Jones, Prime Minister. I've been on an unexpectedly extended holiday for the past 40 years." She glares at the Doctor, clearly conveying to him that he's not been at all punctual in picking her up.

When Violet realizes that her best friend intends to leave forever, she's clearly disappointed and trying very hard to maintain her aristocratic stoicism. But the Doctor, seeing the obvious friendship between the two women, invites Violet to accompany them ("Just a short trip, and back in plenty of time for afternoon tea").

And off they go, on lots of adventures. The End.
That would be fantastic. :D

Y. Strahovski.

Just to mix things up.
Ugh. NO.

She was a large reason why I couldn't get into Chuck (although there were other reasons as well) and she was also a large (but hardly the only reason) why Dexter sucked so tremendously in its final seasons.

I have a clear recollection of seeing what I said. You're free to believe it or not, since I can't produce a link at the moment, but I also certainly don't care enough about this to make up crap about it. I might care a little about being called a liar, if it wasn't for the fact that you've already taken on the identity of a supervillain. :p

Alas, I do wish Diana Rigg was still about the age she was during the Mrs. Bradley Mysteries. True, she still would've been about 5 years older than Hartnell and Capaldi (relatively), but I think she would've worked wonderfully then. Or, even as another regeneration for Romana.

But for today? Olivia Coleman would certainly work well, but for some reason, I'm not overly enthused by that idea. Hayley Atwell? Not sure...

No, honestly, I think my vote would go to Carey Mulligan. Yes, Sally Sparrow made that much of an impression on me.

Unless we're talking a big budget film I think that's never going to happen, and much as I adore Mulligan on multiple levels if we were going for someone of that level of fame my pick would be Saorise Ronin (hopefully spelled that OK!)

Sure. But, I seriously seriously SERIOUSLY doubt that the reason they haven't had a female Doctor is because of some government censorship in some country (where the BBC probably doesn't collect much of a fee), for fear of some "outrage."

If you saw it, most likely it was someone else's bullshit.

I certainly believe they haven't done it in the past because of sexism in the UK and fear of people having a freak out.

It's still going to happen when finally they actually do it. And I wouldn't be surprised that when Capaldi goes, the Doctor will be a woman.

Hopefully a woman of color. Let's just get it all done at once.

I vote for Ruth Negga.

Tatiana Maslany is a great suggestion.

Also, again, an American, bFirefly's River Tam herself, Summer Glau does excellent quirky

^ Saoirse Ronan. But blame spellcheck and autocorrect, they hate Irish names!

That's what I get for posting from my phone on the bus, thanks for correcting me :)

I hadn't thought of Ronan because of her age -- she's only 21 -- but now I'm wondering what she could do with the role in a decade. Based on what I've seen of her work (Atonement, Hanna, Byzantium), she could be scary good at the Doctor.

When I saw the trailer for Brooklyn in front of Mr. Holmes a few months back, I didn't realize it starred Ronan. I actually thought it was Sarah Bolger in the lead.

Olivia Williams.

Also, for some reason, Rachel Stirling has made an impression on me as a potential Doctor ever since "The Crimson Horror."

I wonder if a female Doctor would have just one costume, or would go through a bunch like Romana did.

I'd prefer if they kept it the way that they're going with Capaldi; lots of variations but all centering around a vague theme and nothing that stands out too much.

The Borgified Corpse, I know several women whose opinion of Tennant is pretty similar to Donna Noble’s view of Ten in that he’s, to paraphrase, “a thin streak of nothing” a lot of fangirls(and boys) clearly fancy him to bits, but strictly speaking he isn’t your classic leading man (Too tall and skinny, slightly gawky looking, really bad skin ;) and he’s also not ginger). Point is he’s attractive but not generically so, but lots of people fancy Matt and Chris and I’d wager a lot of people even go weak at the knees for Capaldi but none of them are exactly Brad Pitt (I’d add here that I’m no Brad Pitt either, in fact I’m not even a David Tennant ;) )

While I'd agree with the bad skin, I'm not sure how tall or skinny are detriments (particularly since Tennant has filled out a bit since he first played the Doctor back in 2005). And while he's no lantern-jawed superhero type, I think he's generally got a solid, classically handsome face.

Matt Smith is good looking by real world standards but pretty awkward looking for Hollywood standards.

Christopher Eccleston is the textbook definition of "sexy ugly." ;)

Re your two rules I’m probably 90% with you on no cleavage and 50% with you on no skirts. Clearly we don’t want a Doctor dressed like Tegan in Enlightenment all the time (it would be rather distracting!) but if the Doctor has to happen to go to some swanky party it wouldn’t be the end of the world if she happened to borrow some glamorous frock that River left behind and it happened to, shock, show a little bit of skin in places.

I don't know that showing skin is appropriate for the Doctor. Think of how seldom it's happened so far. I can only think of 6 instances during the show's entire 52 year span:
Pertwee taking a shower shortly after he first regenerated in "Spearhead from Space."
McGann wasn't wearing much when he first woke up in the hospital morgue in the 1996 movie.
Eccleston was shirtless when he was being tortured in "Dalek."
The metacrisis version of Tennant was naked when he was first created in "Journey's End."
Smith ran out of the shower wearing nothing but a towel in "The Lodger."
Smith was naked on the TARDIS while preparing to go to the Papal Mainframe in "The Time of the Doctor." (Actually, technically, he was probably naked for most of the episode. His clothes were a hologram.)

For a moment I thought that was Evangeline Lily!

Allyn Gibson Oh yes Ronan is clearly too young at the moment but boy is she a great actress and I’m not sure it’d even take a decade for her to be ready. Like Matt I think she just nails that old soul in a young body vibe.

The Borgified Corpse, Olivia Williams is an interesting one as is Rachel Stirling. I’m losing count of who has/hasn’t been suggested now but has anyone mentioned Keely Hawes?

And it isn’t that I don’t think Tennant is good looking, and he’s clearly the most good looking of all the modern Docs from an objective point of view, but I still don’t think he’s quite your classic leading man type. Matt’s an odd one because he just looks so different from every angle. Sometimes he looks incredibly gawky, and the very next moment he looks like he should be modelling!

And when I say show some skin I’m not expecting a female Doctor to get nekkid, just saying that it wouldn’t be the end of the world if she wore an off the shoulder dress or something that showed a hint that she might have breasts. Sometimes it isn’t about how much skin is on show, just look at the hoo-ha about Clara’s boobage in Face the Raven!
