Indeed. Nice "humanization" of The Frontier™. Perhaps The Frontier™ doesn't want to become "Civilized" (i.e. "Starfleet Civilized") after all.

It'll be interesting to see how that plays out on screen.

    NERD ALERT!!!

I think there's an interesting Prime Directive question here: why would you pack the escape pods of an exploration starship with gear that identifies where its from? They can likely destroy the pods, but will need the gear to survive.

Do they need to trash the Enterprise in every movie (to be fair, they did this in most of the old movies as well: II,III,IV,VI,GEN,INS,NEM)? I love the first two JJ movies, but was unimpressed with that trailer. Still, it's just a teaser trailer aimed at a wider audience, so I'm withholding judgement.

I'm intrigued. I'm no fan of Justin Lin, but it's Star Trek and I'm going to see it. I really don't like the TNG inspired uniforms, but I dig the golden rock formations and other elements that look like big budget versions of TOS papier mache planets. The bad guys feel as much Galaxy Quest and Guardians of the Galaxy, however a planet bound story might be a fun change. Can't wait for the real trailer.

It might be interesting if the story were engaging with themes of cultural imperialism and post-colonialism, but I suspect we'll be getting something more basic than that.

Unfortunately, it's the action movie paradigm -- stuff blows up and vehicles crash. It's telling that it's become such a routine trope that they actually give the destruction of the Enterprise away in the first trailer. (Did the Generations saucer crash show up in any of the trailers? I'm sure the Enterprise-E/Scimitar collision was in the Nemesis trailers.)

But I remember plenty of fans saying they hated the design of this Enterprise, its awkward proportions and its implausible size. Maybe the next one will be sleeker and smaller.

A fair, patient, and rational response? Careful, they'll revoke your Internet license.

I'm still confused by the whole "implausible size" nonsense. Its a spaceship, I didn't know that there could be such a thing as an "implausible size"?

That's no starship, it's an implausible space station!

One of the aliens looks a bit like a Reman. Or that guy from 'Cold Front'?

Never judge a movie by its trailer... But this one seems to have a more TOS vibe than STID. I'm on board!

Well, it's two and a half times the length of the Prime-universe NCC-1701, and is even larger than the Enterprises D and E from a century later. In historical context, it seems anachronistically large. (Plus there's the fact that it was built on the ground rather than in space. Given that, a larger ship is definitely more implausible.)

Maybe it's the opposite of TARDIS.

    Smaller on the inside. ;)

For a society that has mastered matter and gravity, I'm not sure building it on the ground would really be an issue.

As far as being larger than Prime universe ships, is that really an issue? We only saw one Starfleet design during the run of TOS and nothing says they didn't build bigger ships.

Star Trek technology is indistinguishable from magic. They can build it on the ground if they want to. ;)

Impressive. A teaser of nothing but action comedy tropes and action beats. All it needs is a few winks to the audience and it's a true Abramsverse film.
