http://www.startrek.com/article/new-star-trek-series-premieres-january-2017 We've talked before about the hypothetical of a new Trek series coming along and the possibility that it could contradict the events of the Litverse, invalidating it and possibly meaning the end of the current storylines. Well after today's news, at least the first part of that hypothetical is now a reality. Are you apprehensive that this series could be set in the Prime Universe, and ruin the rich storytelling experience we've been getting from the Litverse over the last 15 years? I for one would almost rather not have a new series, just keep cranking out top notch books. Hopefully the new series will be set in the alternate universe and the Litverse can just keep on going uninterrupted. In fact, if the new series gets a book deal, this could spur on a solution to the rights issue keeping the Litverse from talking about the events of Star Trek 09.
OT, but: NEW TREK TV SERIES ANNOUNCED http://comicbook.com/2015/11/02/new-star-trek-tv-series-official-details-released/ EDIT: Oops, didn't see the other thread...
The new TV series will probably signal the end of the current TNG-Prime Lit storyline. Even if set in the JJ-verse I imagine CBS would want the Lit focus to move in that direction at some point. And even if it's in the Prime-verse...it'll end up changing 'history' post Nemesis I'm sure. Series like Seekers might endure tho.
I don't care what timeline it's set in. All I want is good show runners, good writers and good actors.
The announcement is all of a few hours old. Probably a bit early to start feeling "apprehensive." We'll know more when we know more. No need to worry in advance on the basis of little or no information. In the meantime, I have books to write . . . .
I'm indecisive. It depends on if I'll like the new show or not. I'm also not a fan of a new series, but I'll wait and see....
Kurtzman's TV chops are up to snuff. Shows like Fringe, Alias, Transformers Prime and Sleepy Hollow are good. I don't care for the guy's films, but the shows he is involved in are generally good.
Re: OT, but: NEW TREK TV SERIES ANNOUNCED The General thread? Anyway, this be fortunate for TrekLit: Series VII is directed by Kurtzman and could be set in the alternate reality, or a brand new timeline. If so, TrekLit has free rein on the future of its version of the prime timeline.
I'm not apprehensive over that. The possibility of a new television or movie invalidating the details of the novels has always been there. My apprehension -- dismay, really -- is over the streaming nature of the program. I'm not sure how wise it is. Yes, Star Trek fans are tech savvy, but there are fans who either won't or can't subscribe to see it, either for financial or technological reasons. For a franchise with mainstream name recognition like Star Trek, the format has the potential to exclude part (or even much) of its potential audience.
Re: OT, but: NEW TREK TV SERIES ANNOUNCED I really hope it's in the alternate timeline. If this ends the LitVerse, I will be very sad.
Surprising news. Though maybe not. I guess now that the movie trilogy has completed filming, this is the next step. Although I'm surprised that it's streaming rather than network. I hope it is in the Abramsverse. As I've said many times, a lot of the criticisms people have about the Abramsverse vs. the Prime universe are really more about movies vs. TV, because many of the prior Trek movies have a lot of the same issues. Trek really works better in the TV format, where you have more room to develop the world and the characters and don't have to emphasize spectacle and action so much. So being movie-only puts the Abramsverse at a handicap compared to the Prime universe. If it added a TV series to the mix, it would balance the scales somewhat.
suggests that it's NOT Abramsverse. Personally, I'm not apprehensive; I'm disgusted by the idea that it will be offered exclusively through a subscription streaming/video-on-demand service: some of us neither HAVE nor WANT broadband Internet at home. Some of us still use landline phones, and still use cellular phones that are PHONES. Some of us, when we buy recorded music or video, still buy it on physical media. Some of us would rather spend $70 and an afternoon's work on the roof and in the attic, mounting and hooking up a Yagi antenna pointed at Mount Wilson, in order to get decent reception of KUSC, than listen to it online. Some of us still read books, instead of e-books, and find nothing but irritation when publishers issue e-book-only releases.
No, because if a new series did end the unfortunate mess that the 24th century books have become, that could only be a good thing. I would hate to see the novel line end entirely though. The TOS line is doing great.
Indeed; you're entitled to those opinions, certainly, hbquik, but you have to be aware that it also entails certain sacrifices in terms of what you have available to you. And sometimes those sacrifices are things that you would otherwise like to have. (Edit: In response to hbquik and Dimesdan)
Re: OT, but: NEW TREK TV SERIES ANNOUNCED After losing the Star Wars EU (Sorry, i loved most of it!) this would be a double blow, especially after i recently decided to start the post-Nemesis stuff. But then that star wars trailer hit, and ive been on a star wars high, putting the trek on hold, and reading through all the new cannon wars books.
