When was the last time millions of people from one region were dispersed globally?

The Irish after the potato famines?

Thanks - and no. I am prevented by regulations from being publicly political. However, not from being privately charitable.

Refugee numbers in the millions have happened a few times in recent decades, notably Rwanda in 94 (2.3m) and Iraq in 91 (1.4m) but displacement matching Syria (currently standing just above 4 million and another 7 million internally displaced) hasn't been seen since WWII and even then the situation was quite different, there was no single displaced group of the size of that seen today.

I feel we should do more since we did invade Iraq.

Okay well there are a lot of problems with that to start with but picking out the most obvious one of, they're not homes to live in, and don't involve the food or water needed so...yeah just use this crisis to spread a religious agenda there UAE, yeesh.

So...is there going to be some way of checking the health of these refugees--though many are not actual refugees of war, but taking advantage of the opportunity to leave a place of relative safety to move to Europe. Last thing Europe needs is an epidemic from people who refused vaccinations on "religious grounds."

I swear, the older I get, the more conservative I become.

I don't want France to not be France, nor Germany not be Germany. Even with Germany's history, there's sufficient positive culture that I want retained. Ironic, though, that Germany killed so many very-German/European Jews and is now allowing in so many Arabs. Guess they blew it big time. Had they not gone after the Jews, there'd be no Israel, no excuse for problems in the Middle East but those between Arabs.

No matter where you go, there you are.
Does this mean that a younger you would have clocked this as a time-honoured form of irrational xenophobic blather but the older you no longer cares? Maybe you should try caring again.

I have to be honest, that comes across as some fairly strong racism. Many of these refugees are coming from places that were quite modern; war can turn the most modern city into a pile of ash.

I mean, seriously, who in Syria would want to leave all of this?

Just so you know, that's the same street.

Immigrants and refugees have been passing through their borders for centuries, and France is still France; Germany is still Germany.

It will surprise you to learn that most European countries have functioning (universal) health care systems. So, yes, there are ways to check the health of the people coming here.

If Henry IV had had his way, France could have been England. Germany has quite a bit of history, millennia of it, what is so bad about its past compared to anyone else in Europe? Britain, France, and Russia had a pretty formidable history of mucking things up in the Middle East long before modern Israel was founded, and many powers before them did a fine job of making lives miserable in that causeway between continents.

There's nothing to worry about. I've been to France and they're all riding around on bicycles reading Derrida, wearing black and white jumpers and berets with a string of garlic over their shoulder and a Gauloises in their mouths. It's as French as it's ever been.

Haven't been to Germany but I assume they're still eating fat sausages and spanking each other while an oompah band plays in the background.

It seems our fabled tendency to take jokes seriously is still doing well, at least. ;)

If only people had the common courtesy to stay put while war is going on all around them. :(

They need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, you know. Surely they can handle a little utter destruction of their homes and way of life. I mean, yesterday I got cut off in traffic and I didn't try to escape to Canada.

If they cared about their countries, they'd stay there and do something about it. Instead, they export they're troubles to decent, peace-loving folk. Now, what are you gonna' do about it, just sit there and take it? Of course not... Get some orange Pintos and send them back.

They seem kind of dirty, too. I mean, yeah, bombed homes and such, but do they have to bring over all of that dirt, and disease? Savages.

Yeah, they should ban some of those whacky Republican candidates who oppose mandatory vaccinations on religious grounds from entering Europe and infecting it with their stupidity.

It's sort of like dementia that way.

I don't want to be the guy who Godwins the thread (oh, wait, you already did that), but you are literally lifting old school Nazi and now neo-Nazi slogans about "Germany for Germans: Foreigners Go Home" right from their rhetoric and signs, like this recent attack on an immigration center or this protest:

I love that your big objection to the Holocaust is not that exterminating millions of people is wrong, but that it gave those pesky Arabs an excuse to invade our pure European nations with their diseased refugees. You're on quite a racist roll.

I'm gonna suggest you take a break from posting in this thread for a while, because you've clearly had some kind of a racist stroke or something.
