besides the first 2 superman movies and the first 2 batman movies pre-2000, most superhero movies and shows sucked. i was a huge comic geek in the 80s and back then i could never imagine what everything is going on now. so to be it simply..comic movies is what fans like me have been waiting on.

the marvel and dc films might be flawed, some better than others, but overall the movies now are treated with respect and giving good budgets and detail by the casts and crews and studios.

super hero movies are just the new action movies of the day. remember when van damme and steven seagal were all over the place?

the good thing about comic movies is that there are so many different films and genres and variety that people are bound to like at least one of them. im a comic fan so i love like 90% of them.

but someone who isnt into it may love the nolan batman films while somebody else might be into the whole avengers craze. regardless, there enough to pick from for everyone. as long as they keep things fresh and keep the stories going and mature than comic book movies wont be going anywhere.

if they make the newer ones the same old, same old (love avengers 2 but it couldve been better!! extended cut please), then the public will get tired of them quick. keeps them fresh with good stories and good entertainment then they be around for awhile.

sucks about the new FF. i enjoyed the 2 older ones. they were just fun. lets hope they dont go backwards and start making catwoman and superman 3 & 4 type of films lol

I love superhero movies, but the template needs to change. It feels like almost everything's a tweak on the same formula.

One of the reasons I enjoyed "The Winter Soldier" so much was because it felt like a very different kind of movie than "First Avenger," but still fit into the greater narrative of the MCU.

The formulaic nature of many superhero movies needs a bit of a shakeup, it's hard to be excited by them anymore because I almost always walk into the theater:

    - with a good idea of what I'm going to experience because they're all the same
    - if I happened to make the mistake of watching the trailer, I've probably seen half the movie.

I'd say personal preference is unavoidable. If you can't stand musicals, Singin' In The Rain might not appeal to someone (but its still great).

I did say imho Godfather may be the best, but its's just an opinion. Your mileage may vary...

That's the point, though. Personal preference is completely subjective, so when people constantly throw around this idea of 'superhero movies can never truly compete with all these great classics', that's pure bs. For plenty of people, the Dark Knight probably IS better than the Godfather. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt which one I'd rather watch (though I don't think the Godfather is a bad movie), and there is no legitimate argument against that, unless you (general you) actually believe you can come up with some sort of objective standard for what makes a great movie.

And just to clarify my post you quoted before, this post is not snobbery at all.

When someone proclaims that x is brilliant and y is terrible and anyone who disagrees is a philistine or a troglodyte, that is snobbery.

Or to put it in another context, you aren't a true Star Trek fan if you like that!

Fair enough. Just wanted to point out that there are plenty of classics out there that rival The Godfather in stature and quality.

And,yeah, some of us prefer musicals to Mafia movies. :)

But Star Wars was not intentionally setting up the Emperor. The idea that he was the supreme master or even source of the Dark Side was not even considered until ESB production, before that he was conceived as more like a corrupted bureaucrat who was a puppet of sinister interests. Vader as a force user was initially supposed to be a loner on the Imperial side, and it wasn't till after the movie came out that Lucas decided that he worked for the Emperor rather than as a henchman for Tarkin.

Star Wars was made pretty much like a standalone film. Lucas had a huge outline beforehand, but it was almost nothing like the sequels actually developed.

Speedball? Bite your tongue! Poor Robbie Baldwin's suffered enough in the comics; he deserves to be portrayed by a young heartthrob (like Dylan O'Brien from Teen Wolf) as a way of reparations for what Mark Millar and subsequent writers have inflicted upon him.

Mr. Immortal, I can definitely see. The Great Lakes Avengers would make for a fun episode of Agents of SHIELD.

Kranz kind of looks like the new Starbrand from Hickman's Avengers book, at least when Dustin Weaver draws him.

Robbie's on the other side almost, apart from psychic aftershadows clinging to his aura.

Nope. As an avid reader of Iron Man in the 70s and 80s, I waited FOREVER to see my fav comic hero realized on the big screen. And they did the source work justice. Maybe even improved upon it. I say, make 20 more Iron man films.

And I'd argue that the plot, script and cast were a lot better in The Avengers, and that I could think of dozens of films that can beat Godfather in every category  Its all opinion.

It is all opinion, absolutely. What is not opinion is that The Godfather still generates thoughtful popular as well as scholarly attention and discussion after 40 years. And Citizen Kane and Casablanca after 70+ years. There's some kind of accomplishment in that. Will The Avengers have that kind of longevity? I don't know, maybe it will.

And that would be objectively false. It's fine if you find the Avengers more enjoyable (I do too), but it's not the better film.

Hard to say. Back in 1933, a prestige pic titled Cavalcade was billed as the "picture of a generation," received rave reviews, and won the Oscar for Best Picture. But who besides film historians remembers Cavalcade anymore?

You know what else came out 1933? This silly crowd-pleasing blockbuster about a giant gorilla climbing the Empire State Building.

Guess which movie we're still talking about.

Great for you, but I don't give a damn what your balls say. They have no standing to tell anyone else that they're wrong for finding one movie better than another. The entire discussion is inherently subjective, ergo 'You're wrong' is 100% bull$#it.

I make it a point to know as little as humanly possible about other guys' balls.
