Kate Mulgrew's Memoir "Born with Teeth".

Give Kate's Mom a little slack, Teacake. :sigh:

Remember what the woman had just gone through in her own life. One might assume it would make you want to keep the grandchild even more, but her heart may have been too broken for "Grand-mom" to even make the offer. :weep:

I am giving her slack. I said it was the era, it was the normal thing to do. The reason I wouldn't be doing that myself I put down to the time and place I live in.

I other words, there but for the grace of time and lots of activism go I.

Mulgrew is only four years younger than me. Society pressures back then were the girl either married the father, or gave the baby up for adoption. Being an unwed mother then was a mark of shame.

Teacake, I guess I just couldn't imagine going the adoption route. Knowing that someone else would be raising my child. Hypothetically, if I had been in Kate's situation, I would have thought to hell with my parents or anyone else who dares to shame me. But that's just me.

I wasnt going to get into this , simply because to me - I do not feel comfortable hearing pieces of Mulgrew falls. She is too complex for me to grasp but i will say this though.

I do not think she took the decision to put her daughter up for adoption very lightly. From what i read on someones link , she was in a relationship with the father( i think). Her career was taking flight , it will have been extremely difficult to balance everything without someone ultimately paying the price and that price will have been her daughter. They are so many parents out there who resent the fact a child starved them of their careers and true happiness - which ultimately leads to abuse or even worse death. Mulgrew in my opinion had chosen to do right thing and what would have been safe for her daughter. Some could argue she should not have found herself in that situation , knowing what she wanted for her life , but we never know what truly happened, only what has been written. Some could also argue she has hundreds of brothers and sisters and why could she have not placed her with them? They have their own lives ,why should they be burden with Mulgrews mistakes ( not saying it was and i dont mean to offend )

During the years she was making her way up the ladder , im sure that she had in mind that one that when she made it big she will ensure her daughter will be set financially for life and she did just that when she stuck gold with Voyager. The first person she went in search of was her daughter.
Her daughter appears to be a well rounded person and im sure she will understand her mothers situation and im glad they have become very close

SPOILERS...

In one of the interviews I listened to and THINK I posted a link to, she mentions that ...

her mom encouraged her to give the baby up for adoption when Kate called home to give her the news. Her mom at the time had just (recently) buried one of her own daughters and presumably wasn't in the mood to take on the care of a newborn. Kate realized that at the stage of life she was in, she could not devote herself to the child and to learning/practicing her craft. Evidently she changed her mind "soon" after and tried unsuccessfully to find the child for many years.
I just wanted to say that the concept of spoilers about a person's biography is super hilarious to me  OMG SPOILERS ABOUT THAT PERSON'S LIFE!

I shouldn't find this as funny as I do, but there it is.

I've been chastised at discussing a BBC 2 show released in the UK 2014 and in the US en mass 1/2015 on the boards in 2015 w/o "spoiler" tags, so I'm a little gun shy.

Plus someone (here or in the OitNB thread) had mentioned they where avoiding stories about the book so they wouldn't be spoiled.

Just trying to be respectful. :)

Not a criticism, it's perfectly reasonable to spoiler tag it for people who haven't read the book.

As I've said, I shouldn't find the concept this funny, but I do. ;)

The decision to have the child and keep it, to have an abortion or to decide to have the child and place it for adoption is too personal for me to stand in judgment of any woman who has had an unwanted pregnancy. Only that woman knows what was happening in her life. In Mulgrew's case I feel for her because she spent years trying to find her daughter. I'm glad that she was eventually able to find her and that they have a close relationship.

I'm editing my comment because after reading a lot of reviews online I found out something that has me upset. The professional reviews that I read were all positive, as were the comments from people who had an advance copy of the book. The consensus is that it's well written and a good read.

What got me upset is to find out through a few of the comments that Kate mentions having been raped. I don't know what took place and how old she was at the time, but my heart goes out to her. I have a friend who went through that ordeal in her late teens and has haunted her ever since, even though it happened decades ago and she's now happily married. I don't think that a woman ever forgets a sexual assault.

:(

For some reason my University's bookstore put out a copy of Mulgrew's book last week so I managed to read it over the weekend.

I really liked it BUT this is not a book to buy if you're interested in Kate's career or Voyager gossip. Mulgrew's career is presented as more of a side note throughout the book. The clear focus of the story is Mulgrew's relationship with her mother, the men in her life, and her giving up her daughter for adoption and her mission to find her. It's really about love.

She does devote a chapter to covering her auditions for Voyager without adding anything that we didn't really know before. The most gossipy it gets is that she found Executive Producer Jeri Taylor to be cold and distant, and it took the hair and makeup people two hours every morning to style Mulgrew's hair into the Janeway bun and the bun was later taken down to give Mulgrew an extra hour of sleep each morning.

If you want to know about Mulgrew's personal life and her struggles with men and motherhood this is a good book. If you're purely interested in gossip from her career, don't spend your money.

Thanks for the heads up Timtoruben359, I must have superpowers because i anticipated this was exactly what her memoirs was about , her Men Men and more about her men and bits and bobs of the adoption. This red blooded lesbo , wont be spending her hard earned cash on that , that's for sure:techman:..
I cannot say im shocked to hear about Jeri Taylor . I can imagine how many battles this woman had fought to survive in a high male dominated world of Star Trek and has the wars wounds to prove it . I think she is an incredible woman nevertheless

Well, it makes sense that she would talk in her book about the men in her life as she is straight.

Kate is supportive of gay rights, though. When she has been asked about what she thinks was missing from Voyager, she more than once has mentioned the lack of a gay character.

;)

Of course, i would not have expected her to be anything else but straight:p..

Dont be getting me started on her gay rights bs now my sweetness.. She didnt begin to run her mouth on that until YEAAAAAAAARS later ( im talking when Voyager was at the end of its run) after Ryan started coming out with her support of Gay rights several years before and seriously i think they both are in search of media hype and to make themselves sound cool and down with Lesbian and Gay issues than genuine support.. But hey thats my opinion :)

I'm new here, but I get the feeling that you just don't like Mulgrew. Therefore, nothing that she does seems to meet with your approval. I'm glad that you think that Ryan is such a great individual, I don't know her. I don't think that this should be a competition. I doubt that Mulgrew has thought much about Ryan one way or the other after the show was over. Yes, she has answered questions about their relationship when asked, but has not instigated them. Voyager ended 14 years ago and both actresses have moved on with their lives.

I find Kate to be highly intelligent, well read and quite funny. I watched Voyager because of her. I was thrilled to see a woman in the captain's role and I actually liked her performance as Janeway.

Oh no Beabird, that is further from the truth.. Just because i do not believe her genuine support does not mean i dislike her. In all my posts , i cant say that i have expressed a strong dislike for her. You mentioned you are new here. May i suggest you take a minute or two and read my posts.

I may not be a huge fan , but certainly admire her work and always stated that i respect and admire her more than Ryan. I think she is highly intellectual , funny ,worldly courageous and an extraordinary actress. I just happened to be upfront in seing people for what they are..

Im about peace and love man:techman::guffaw:

Oh and i do think she has thought about Ryan after the show ended = here or even there LOL

WHEEEEEEE!

Guess what I just got in the mail??? THE BOOK and CD! WOW! It's 8 CD's and 9.5 hours long.

Bye! I have some reading and listening to do. :)

"I wanted to read the book to find out more about what Mulgrew thought of Captain Janeway, who was one of my childhood role models and maybe my first feminist icon. I wanted Mulgrew to dish on her friendships or antagonisms with cast and crew and talk about whether she thought her character was particularly well or ill-served in certain episodes.

I didn’t get that, but what I got was better. I got to dive into the soul of a woman who throws herself head-on at opportunities, who follows her heart, who endures immense pain but channels it into her work and survives – not a ’90s TV superwoman, but a real woman sustained by family, friends and immense courage."

Nice review. Thanks for posting it. I can't wait to meet her tonight at the book signing.

:)

De nada. :mallory:

As for meeting Mulgrew tonight, I predict you will succumb to her charms the moment she looks into your eyes and asks who to sign the book to. :p
