After 50 years, an end to the Trek?

Trek has never been that high-brow or just for "enlightened people." Some folks have placed it on a high pedestal over the decades, but the foundation of that pedestal bears closer scrutiny, IMO.

But if a franchise is going in a direction you don't like or you've simply grown tired of it, then it's just a matter of getting off the train and/or moving on to something else. No one has to be a fan of something forever.

Me, though. It's "Star Trek forever." Even if there are incarnations that I may like less than others, I'd like to see Trek continue for as long as it can. To me, that's when you really love something and aren't just a fair weather friend.

I would like to think that 50 years from now, there will be new generations of Trekkers still talking (or rather arguing) about their latest Trek movie or series.

Too many franchises spoil the show...

 

We're going thru a period where there's a lack of vision at Paramount, and not very creative people doing Trek movies.

Its just a matter of time until someone at Paramount gets a new series up and running.

Paramount ran Trek into the ground with the 4 successive series. They're probably happy with making money off those for now, but I believe 100% there will be another Trek series within the next 10 years.

Paramount would have had one up and running already. But CBS--who now controls the rights to Trek's TV's division--well...they feel kind of different about the need for a new Trek series any time soon, IMO...

 

After the next movie, they should take a break for 4-5 years, and then launch a new TV series sent in the nuTrek alternate reality.

 

The question is, will they use the same people that were in the movies or new ones for the series as they sometimes do? For example the series High lander had a different actor than Christopher Lambert, whether he refused, asked too much money or some other reason is anybody's guess.

It's lasted this long there's no reason for it to stop. Just like I don't see a reason for Family Guy to end.

 

It won't end because it's gotten too big for that.

 

I love Trek, but there is a finite amount of money in Hollywood. People forget that when one film or series gets made, another doesn't. There is a choice to be made between stringing along an existing franchise, or risking money on fresh ideas.

There is a market for Sci-Fi, but when the writers of Trek are told "Make it like Guardians of the Galaxy" (which I also loved) it's obvious they have no faith in the core idea.

 

I feel like the Abrams movies opened new doors for Trek's longevity, and I fully expect that for the next few decades, more and more Trek will be produced, albeit in different versions, incarnations, timelines, etc.

And I say that because of Trek's place in American pop culture. Decades ago it was already a fixture, but now that there's unspoken permission -- under the Paramount umbrella, of course -- to produce separate versions of it, I expect it to get remade or reimagined or rebooted (or, god willing, revived prime-wise), akin to, say, the number of Robin Hood or Shakespeare or Sherlock Holmes or Journey to the West productions out there.

For that matter, not that Paramount would let this happen, but if Trek were ever to enter the public domain...

 

I thought the last two offerings were some of the best Star Trek ever...not that I'm intentionally disparaging any others. I really like the new crew...esp Chris Pine.

 

If you really did do so, you'd be reading sci-fi, not just watching it.

I love classic Trek, I love current Trek, and I can't wait to see what the future holds! Onward!

 

I can't vote on this. I do want new Star Trek, just not the action, action, ACTION we're getting now.

Just give me something closer to the old format, where it's possible to have a 6 minute scene with three guys sitting around a campfire talking about marshmellows. If that's not possible, please leave it alone. If it is possible, by all means, Onward!

As Much as I like the nuTrek movies (and I do like them!) I have to say, that what they do more than anything else is make me watch the original series all over again!

And while NuTrek Pales in comparison to Classic Trek it does keep the name of Star Trek alive and for those of us who grew up with Classic Trek (well for me anyway.) the fact that there's something out there to remind humanity of the ideals and inspiration that Gene Roddenberry presented through that fun TV series.

For that reason I say:

KEEP 'EM COMING!!!

 

While the first Abrams movie was almost a triumph, unless NuTrek recovers from ITD, which I have large doubts about, with Nimoy having left us, I'm feeling very pessimistic about Trek's future.

I don't see CBS ever green lighting another Trek show. It would cost too much money, and where would the new stories come from? Half of Voyager was just rehashed TNG scripts, and Enterprise died because no one watched it.

I echo what Cyke101 has said about the idea of Trek being allowed in to the public domain. The Axanar project has shown what can be done on a limited budget with professionals who care about the material.

 

The way I see it, as much as more Trek is always wanted, our very own adventure is only just beginning, and there is an amazing amount of Prime Trek which is always going to be there to draw upon to guide and augment the extremely exciting enterprise of humanity, and we all (can) have a part to play, whether we realize it or not, even if it just begins with how we raise our children, which will of course affect our future generations.

I personally am waiting for ST Excalibur (the game) and of course Axanar.
