I like the idea of Peter Parker dying and Miles taking over, but why the rush to kill off Peter? Let's keep him around for at least 3 films before killing him off. Miles can wait.

But Peter biting it at the end of Civil War makes a lot more thematic sense, depending on how closely they follow the comic version.

Considering Tony and Steve will basically be fighting over Spidey in the film in a lot of ways, to have it end with both heroes destroying the very thing they were trying to protect is kind of a perfect ending to the senseless violence.

Both stand down because they've gone too far.

And Pete's had five movies, sort-of, and if we give him another three it'll be 2030 before Miles finally shows up. :(

Also Black Panther's totally taking Namor's place in the story. Imperius Rex-style.

Peter's a nobody in the MCU at this point, so killing him off in Civil War makes zero narrative sense. This is also why I don't expect him to play the same role as he did in the comic storyline, or even have as large a role. The Civil War of the MCU will be about government oversight of superhumans, not whether or not their identities should be a matter of public record.

Seriously, Miles Morales is not going to be showing up in the movies any time soon. He's popular among comic book fans, but I'm willing to bet that's as far as awareness of the character goes. The vast majority of people out there only know Peter Parker as Spider-Man. That's who they'll be expecting, and that's who they'll be getting.

Well, it's just not the movies. Pop culture is SATURATED in Superman origin stories. Superman movies, TV shows, cartoons, comics all telling and RETELLING and RETELLING and RETELLING the same tired clichés OVER and OVER and OVER.

All variations of Kal El being shipped off, Krypton getting blown to smithereens, Kents finding them in the countryside, and Clark having growing pains. They may use different tones, and colors, and actors, and special effects, but it all boils down to the same damn thing. Krypton blows up, Superman escapes, goes to Smallville, has growing pains and turns into Superman.

There was even a show, Smallville, which had---what---10 seasons of Superman origin storytelling. Then they had Superman Returns, which featured origin storytelling, then they had MOS, which was a reboot and that had more origin storytelling.

I'm OVER IT. Done to death. And it's starting to happen to Spidey...

Thanks for the explanation. I agree they should do an Incredible Hulk thing if they use Peter Parker to avoid all the Uncle Ben and regret thing.
Yeah, we've waited so long for Peter Parker to join the MCU that they should keep him around. Or use Miles and then build up to Peter Parker....

A nobody in the MCU doesn't make him a nobody to the audience, the whole world knows who Spider-Man is.

And going with Garfield gives them the chance to grandfather in the Amazing series, where Pete has become relatively known.

And it's not like Spidey is a big-player within the actual 616-verse, he rarely ventures outside New York. Sure, we the readers know and love him and consider him A-list, but in universe he's considered a minor player, so it fits he's a minor player in the MCU too.

Course, like I said earlier, it's pretty much 100% not going to happen anyway; too much time and money spent on getting the rights to Peter Parker to only use him once. And yes, I realise Marvel and Sony said no money was exchanging hands for the deal, but it's not like staff and lawyers haven't been working on this for a while, that costs money.

We're all just speculating on interesting ways they could approach the properties.

And since we don't yet know how exactly CA:CW will follow the comics, Spidey's role is entirely up for grabs - hell, I never really got how so many said he was essential to the plot - in the comics his defection had pretty much zero-impact on the final confrontation.

Well, Spidery appears to be in high school while Jessica Jones appears to not be. So that's the only real issue. It makes it difficult for a lot of Spider-Man flashbacks to an earlier career.

Yes, Daredevil tv show = Marvel, Spider-Man = Sony. That's why I said shared.

If you have a link to someone official saying that, I'll have to believe it, but I can't help but be skeptical of that. Kingpin was established in Spider-Man, appeared there for years, appeared in several key Spider-Man issues, and will still appear there on occasion. This isn't like saying Blackheart is shared between Daredevil and Ghost Rider because he appeared in Daredevil first, Kingpin is a Spider-Man villain.

Anyway, it may be a moot point now.

ETA: Sorry about the doublepost. Didn't realize I was still in the same thread.

Frankly, I didn't want Man of Steel to have an origin story and I don't want this to have an origin story. Thankfully, there's no indication they'll retell the origin.

I don't think it'll be Miles Morales. I hope he comes into the picture at some point, but I suspect Marvel wants to start with Peter Parker and I know Sony (who still has final Spider-Man say) has no interest in Morales.

I disagree with part of that. A college age, or high school age in an under-privileged neighborhood is the perfect struggling character. In fact, I would say that a black Peter Parker growing up in the U.S. today would be even more appropriate to the character's back story than the white Peter we've had for fifty years. It would be a bold and timely maneuver for Marvel to do this following the big Secret Wars event. Imagine what a great, inspirational role model the same Peter Parker could be with the minor change of skin tone and back story.

Similar to Ben Grimm, who has lost the significance to his back story over the years, Peter is certainly in need of a change like that.

Killing off Parker almost a soon as you introduce him would be a monumentally cheep move and a really shallow way to artificially raise the stakes. They're just not going to do that.

How is Morales doing in the comics? Are his stories any good? Got a TPB you recommend?

Personally, I love comics but I also go through long periods where I don't buy them in comic shops because everytime I start a title, I slowly get romanticized into buying 3 more, and then 2 more, and then 4 more, and before I know it, I'm spending a lot of money on comics. So I try to keep it to TPB's if friends or acquaintances really suggest a story.

I'm not convinced that changing Peter Parker is the right way to do it. Introduce a new Spider-man with that new background? Sure. But I'd rather they retire the old character than revamp him.

I think a black Peter Parker would be an outstanding way to go.

We already have Fury, War Machine, and Falcon with Luke Cage and Black Panther on the way. Agents of SHIELD has two Asian (female) leads. There is Black Widow, Jessica Jones and Scarlet Witch with Captain Marvel coming. The MCU is already a diverse place, there isn't really any pressing need to make that kind of arbitrary change. And that's how it would seem... arbitrary.

I'm not saying a black actor couldn't nail it and knock it out of the park, but it would seem random, jarring and reek of stunt casting. Change just for the sake of it. If anything, give me a FEMALE Spider, ala MayDay Parker, my favorite non-Pete Spider.

You're just selling me on what a great idea it is.

The overwhelming majority of the movie going public only know Peter Parker from the five movies, if that. The two most important things are finding the right actor for the right story.

If you're going to cast a black actor in the role why not just go all the way and make it Miles Morales?

There is nothing intrinsically white about the Peter Parker character. He is white because white was the default when he was created, no other reason.

I still think resetting Peter back to school is a bad idea. Spidey's become like a stuck record, clicking back to the start every few films. I'm sick of young Spiderman.

I'd have preferred Garfield being retained. Imho he was better than his predecessor and an older Spidey would be way more interesting in the MCU.

They could always have him marry and retire at a later date, then bring in younger character like Morales...

I'm not disputing that. That doesn't make it any less arbitrary of a change. Besides, Sony really is not in a position to be taking those kind of risks with the franchise. They want to recoup their imagined losses for ASM2, and that means they will play things safe to a degree.
