The Blink Drive in Dark Matter is a ripoff of what used to happen when you pulled back on the joystick while playing Asteroids. And the alternate universe episode of Dark Matter had subtle nods to Trek in it - so I'm not sure we'd say Trek ripped them off if they visit the Mirror Universe that they showed decades before Dark Matter was a gleam in a writer's eye. ;)

Jump drive technology has been a staple of science fiction for probably as long as FTL/warp drive has. No one is ripping anything off here.

Obviously the "alternate universe" idea pre-dates Dark Matter - that's not what I meant. But Discovery's fungus drive instantaneous transport IS a copy of the Blink Drive, and I guess I found their discussion as to how it could change the course of the war as an almost exact copy of the discussion of it in Dark Matter. And USING it to access the mirror universe is exactly what Dark Matter did.

There needs to be some payoff for all the Andorian namedropping and trash-talking exposition on the show. It seems like lots of people in this version of the primeverse hate or look down on the Andorians for some reason, humans and Klingons alike. I want to know why, and it seems odd to mention it that often if you're not intending some kind of followup.

Wasn't one of the first Discovery teasers a shot of an Andorian antennae they were working on? It seems to imply we're going to see the Andorians at some point in the season.

^ I must have missed that one, but I'm glad to hear it. Thanks. :)

As a fan of Dark Matter myself, saying that anyone "ripped off" Dark Matter, which was an intentional amalgam of the tone, plots, characters, and setting of about a dozen different recent scifi shows, is kind of silly. Not that there's anything wrong with that, since with the abundance of scifi product out there there's always going to be tons of familiar elements in new shows, and there's no shame in borrowing those elements and putting a new twist on them, or in paying homage to them. I like pointing out familiar plot elements in DSC compared to previous shows as well, but saying it was "ripped off" implies a negative that I don't think is entirely fair.

It was some kind of alien antennae that was very orange in color.
I'm not sure if they ever said what it actually was.

Considering what they did to Klingons, I would not be surprised it Andorians were orange in this show. Wait, I would... everything is blue on Discovery.

The Andorians may not be seen with all the blue. They may have been there all along!

    Agreed.

Side note: Haven't there been two or three actors from Dark Matter that have already appeared on DSC?

I'm sure there have, as there is typically a lot of crossover work between these kinds of shows. I know Emily Coutts (who played the bridge officer with the Lobot cybernetic head attachment) was in Dark Matter and DSC, but I'm not sure who else.

I've heard there were a few actors from The Expanse that have been in DSC already as well.

Filthy Andorians... always taking advantage of the blueness of the universe to sneak around like dirty petaQ.

It’s not really because of them all being sci-fi, it’s because they all film in Toronto (along with Killjoys, 12 Monkeys, Suits, and many others)

Let's not forget all the crossover in the 90s between the Trek shows and the likes of the X-Files, Outer Limits, and Sliders, which often featured the same guest actors writers, and directors.

I dunno, I think it would be vaguely amusing if just every episode they were like "fucking Andorians, man, seriously" and just never followed up on it
