Sometimes you just can't pinpoint the title of a movie or a tvseries you have seen ages ago.. No matter how many searches on imbd or whatever you try.. I think we should have a thread for these sorts of problems..
like "from where is that scene" or "she was in that movie.. or was it a tvshow?".."i recognise this plot from..."

    So.. here is my problem...

I have been looking for a movie that is similar to "Roman Holiday" with Audrey Hepburn.. I dont know what movie im thinking of (well.. might be because it's actually my brother bugging me about the movie) but i am definitly going crazy looking for it. I think it's fairly new.
(But please give me tips if you have other movietitles that are similar etc because i like the general plot :D *shameless girl* )

In the same sort of deal I am also looking for a movie that has like a sheltered rich girl/heiress/princess running away to try out life as a normal teenager.. like going to the mall... eating hotdogs.. meets a regular guy that she falls inlove with (baker?).. I think it came out in the mid 90's or something.

    Anyone?

Alas not. :( But great idea for a thread, here's my problem:

It's a film. An old film (40s/50s?). Stars a couple of famous old actors, one of whom may be Richard Burton, the other possibly Lee Marvin. They are partners in the wild west and buy a hotel. It's the story of their hotel over the next few decades. I've tried to find out what this film is called for years. Any help appreciated.

I can't help with either of the above, alas, but here's my entry:

It's an old film, possibly from the '30s, which bore a strong resemblance to Bewitched. It was about a man who unknowingly married a witch, and the various problems that resulted. I think the plot took place mostly before and during the wedding, with various family members on both sides stepping in to try and screw up the pairing. I remember several scenes that took place in a room with a large, ornate fireplace.

The similarities to Bewitched were enough to make me wonder if it inspired the TV show, but I've never been able to look up any information about it. Sound familiar to anyone?

I don't recall Richard Burton being in any westerns. He wasn't the westerns type.

And I think he only made one film with Lee Marvin - a film called The Klansman (1974), which is actually about the KKK.

Lee Marvin, on the other hand, made a ton of westerns, so you have a better shot with him.

If your film was a musical and your hotel was sorta a 'cover' for a whorehouse, then your film might be Paint Your Wagon, which he did with Clint Eastwood in 1969.

Another western-ish film that Lee Marvin was in where a hotel figured prominently (although was not the subject of the film by any means) is Bad Day at Black Rock, which he did with Spencer Tracy in 1955. I doubt this is it, but I thought I'd mention it, just in case.

I'll keep thinking about other actors though. A few actors who did alot of westerns are John Wayne, Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea, Gary Cooper, Henry Fonda, James Stewart, and Burt Lancaster. Any of those guys ring a bell?

Not sure about the first one, but the second one I think is called First Daughter. Starred Katie Holmes. I never saw it, but for some reason I remembered the premise.

    Hope that helps.

Might also be Bell Book and Candle with Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak.

Or, if it was later than the 90's, maybe it was Chasing Liberty?

Not quite a princess, but what about a movie star? If so, maybe the first one was Notting Hill?

OOh, thank you.. but you were both wrong. I am going to rewatch Notting Hill though since I barely remember it. I think the first one actually do take place in Rome also..

It is also not First daughter,. it is a movie I saw in the 90's.. And first daughter is way too new..
Chasing liberty is a completely new movie for me! But thank you!!! I just watched the trailer, and it is spot on the kind of movie i like to watch. :D

Wrong actors, but "Cheyenne Social Club" came to my mind:

    Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda.

One character inherits the Cheyenne Social Club from his brother. It turns out to be a brothel. They try to make it a respectable boarding house.

Aurian, your description sounded like The Lizzy McGuire Movie with Hilary Duff, or The Prince and Me with Julia Stiles, only in reverse (the guy is the royalty). But both titles are only a few years old.

A spoiled rich girl movie that's nothing like what you mentioned is Excess Baggage with Alicia Silverstone.

It very well could. Excellent movie, also starring Jack Lemmon and Ernie Kovacs. :techman:

This is also the first thing which popped into my mind on reading the description. An excellent movie, too.

I'm not sure, but could it be Only You? (from the mid-90s). I remember it paid tribute to the famous La Bocca della Verità scene from Roman Holiday...

    Here's one:

A Chinese movie from a few years ago; there's a scene where a man and a woman are fighting other men in a field of wheat and the woman is blind and later on, there's a scene in this really green bamboo forest.

D'Oh!!!!!! Y'all going to think im slightly stupid.. but today I googled (what else?) "remake of Roman Holiday"... and come up with this:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093877/

also known as "roman holiday..( from 1987)"
I didn't think I was actually this stupid!

Thanks for the tips though, any help and suggestions on my other problem is still very greatfully received!!! :D

Aragorn!! Yeah. Lizzie Mcguire was in my mind also.. not quite spot on.. but i thought it might have been that one.. but as he distinctively remembered a "catherine" playing in it.. it must be the movie i linked above..
The prince and I, i have on dvd.. (yes, this genre is a guilty pleasure of mine..)
Going to check out Excess baggage also :D thank you

"Bell, Book & Candle" was said to be the original inspiration for "Bewitched". :)

(And, quite by coincidence, I just saw a commercial for Electrolux Appliances starring Kelly Ripa that used the THEME from "Bewitched" as background music! )

Actually, it was "I Married a Witch" that was the "Bewitched" inspiration. Being a big fan of the show when it first ran, I was spurred to look up this movie anytime it aired (BB; Before Blockbuster). Interesting similarities and also interesting differences. Roddy McDowell has the (sort of) Uncle Arthur role.

That's right...the TVLand show I saw on it mentioned both as being "inspired by" that movie. Sol Saks and William Asher (Elizabeth Montgomery's long-time spouse) said as much.

Anyone remember the big "Bewitched"/TOS cast crossover? ;)
