There's a stereotype that sci-fi nerds don't like sports, but I've been a big fan of sports and sci-fi since I was a kid, and know quite a few people who love both. What's your experience?
My dad and I are huge sci-fi fans, but we follow college football religiously. Our favorite team is Ole Miss (our alma mater)
I don't personally follow any sports, but I can enjoy a good game if it's on, and I love going to baseball games in the summertime. I'm also a bartender and a bodybuilder, which kind of goes against the scifi nerd stereotype as well.
Yes, along with other stereotypes like can't get dates (much less actual sex), live with their parents as adults, etc. All perpetrated relentlessly by The Big Bang Theory. I was a high school and college athlete, have loved sports all my life as well as all kinds of Sci-Fi.
We are obviously a diverse group of well-rounded individuals with a variety of talents and interests. Well, maybe except a couple of you.
I must be a representative of that stereotype then, because while I love sci-fi, just the thought of watching sports makes me itch. Although, I do enjoy bowling. Playing that is, not watching.
Well, the forum here is pretty active. I love baseball, football (NFL and college) and soccer. And I will watch my teams religiously from beginning of the season to the end. I only got into sports about a decade again though.
I break all of the stereotypical descriptions of what a Sci-Fi need is supposed to be like and I love sports.
Well, I like basketball (and I do like playing it on PS2, or 3) but I find baseball and football boring.
I used to play a lot of badminton, but not any more. Croquet was fun, too (I used to set up some really weird courses in my back yard). Sports on TV... I'm an Olympics junkie. I'll watch almost anything, with the exception of the martial arts-kind of stuff, table tennis, regular tennis, curling, and short-track speed skating (that should properly be called 'roller derby on skates'). My favorite events are figure skating and gymnastics. Sports on the computer... I'm into miniature golf.
Funny thing is, I'm not what you would call a sci-fi nerd. I'm certainly not into "fantasy." However, I've always liked Trek because it seemed real to me, only set in the future. So it interested me, and I loved the characters. I've always loved NFL and college football here in the USA and kind of like hockey and baseball although I'm not passionate about them. See, I don't think that physical activity is necessarily independent from mental activity. But I don't know that your typical "nerd" would agree.
As others have said we are a diverse bunch much like everyone else. Do I watch a lot of sports, I can't say that I do the only sport that I follow is F1. But that's not to say I don't watch other sports but most of those tend to be at the International level i.e Olympics, World Cup, Ryder Cup, And yes I've even watched a bit of American Football inc. the Superbowl
I kinda follow football (soccer for some of you). I'm not obsessed by it as many of my fellow countrymen, but I like to watch an important game once in a while. I also love to watch rugby: I can't understand anything that happens on the pitch, but it's great to watch it in a pub with a pint of bitter in your hands. I have also been practicing martial arts for almost 15 years, so yeah, I am into sports.
I heard about sex once from some guys. They were asking me questions and stuff, but I can't remember because I was too embarrassed. They did laugh, though, so I felt pretty good about that. Sports is cool and all, but I keep breaking my glasses, and my Mom says if I do it again, I have to go buy my own tape to fix them. I live with my Mom, see. When I am in my Command Fortress in my basement, I like to watch curling and chess, and we like to play WEENIE on-line. Oh, sorry, that stands for "World Electromagnetic Extermination Nuclear Incineration Event". It is really cool. And this one time at a Con I watched some guys talk to some girls for a while. Oh, no, that is sex, not sports. I think.
Sci Fi nerd since birth and major league Trekkie. ALSO a major league NASCAR/Indycar/F1 nut. Follow the NE Patriots (but no other football), endurance sailing (I sail) and fencing (was on college team). Also, since I live in Boston, a sports nut city, I keep up a general knowledge of all the Boston teams I don't follow for use at cocktail parties and networking events. It opens doors, as John Cleese used to say.
